SAN DIEGO — Democratic Congressman Mike Levin appears poised to keep his seat in the House of Representatives, according a scientific poll released Tuesday. The ABC-10News Union-Tribune poll showed Levin ahead of Republican Brian Maryott 49 to 37 in the 49th Congressional District, which stretches from Del Mar into southern Orange County. Levin, a first-term Congressman, defeated Republican Diane Harkey in 2018, flipping the seat longheld by Republican Darrell Issa, who decided not to seek re-election amid changing voter demographics. "We're going to do everything we can to leave no stone unturned for the next 50 days or so to make sure that we keep the 49th this coming November," Levin said. Democrats now outnumber Republicans in the district by about 3 percent. The SurveyUSA poll shows, however, that 13 percent of Republicans surveyed said they planned to vote for Levin. Meanwhile, just 2 percent of Democrats said they'd support Maryott. "If it was 25 percent or higher I would say something's going on," said political analyst John Dadian. "(Levin's) been an incumbent for two years, his challenger is an elected official but not in a good majority of the region."Maryott said it was still early in the race and that he and his campaign are working to get their message out. "People are just really starting to tune in now. Obviously Mike has name recognition that we don't, but we're out there talking to people everyday," said Maryott. Maryott said he would continue to push a message that Levin is to the extreme left of the Democratic Party. Levin said he expects attacks like that this campaign season but stands by his record. The SurveyUSA poll was conducted between Sept. 11 and Sept. 14, of 517 likely voters, with a margin of error of 5.8 percent. 1782

SAN DIEGO (AP) — California hospitals are facing increasingly difficult decisions about which services to postpone amid a crushing load of coronavirus patients. Intensive-care beds are full in Southern California and the Central Valley, and hospitals elsewhere are nearing capacity. Gov. Gavin Newsom has yet to threaten the type of shutdown of elective surgeries that occurred in March and April. But some health care professionals and patient advocates are trying to quell any possibility, telling him in a letter it will it lead to bad outcomes for patients. Meantime, hospitals are doing what they can to create space. At UC San Diego Health, COVID-19 has delayed treatment for more than 30 patients in the last three months, mostly orthopedic procedures. 767

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, well kind of. Cities across the U.S. still may be trying to deck the halls, but a COVID-19 Christmas just looks and feels different. For people of faith, a season full of worship and togetherness will be missed."They do feel isolated," said GlenRoy Watson, a bishop with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Watson’s congregation is made up of about 100 families."Normally at Christmas, we'd eat dinner and hang out and have a Christmas presentation," he said. This year, religious celebrations need to be held at home, but he had an idea."I'm just hoping that everyone will learn a little bit more about each one another and just continue to feel united," Watson said.He asked all families in his congregation to make a home video about their traditions or fond holiday memories to share with each other."It will be kind of like a mini movie," he said."For our Christmas tradition we read the story of Jesus Christ," congregation member Denise Cordero said as she sat with her young daughter by their Christmas tree and spoke to her iPhone camera. For church piano player VerLynn Brink, playing Christmas hymns for everyone at her church is what she will miss most."This is one of my favorite memories of Christmas," she said as she recorded a video on her phone while playing her piano. "I had one of my favorite memories of Christmas in France.”Now, she plays for an audience of one."It’ been a challenge, but I’ve tried to make a point every day to call somebody just so I feel connected," Brink said. She said she is looking forward to the virtual viewing party in the days ahead. At the McGuire home, they are trying to keep the magic of Christmas alive while still focusing on their faith."With this year being a little bit different, we have started some new traditions," Drew McGuire said. The family said they miss meeting with their church family more than ever."This year, I feel like a lot of people have struggled with things and there hasn’t been a lot to feel hopeful about these days," McGuire said. They hope the family video they’re making will help brighten others' days."Merry Christmas everyone," the family said in unison on their video recording. As the videos came pouring in to GlenRoy Watson, it's his family’s turn to record their own video."We love celebrating and learning more about the nativity," Watson said as he smiled at his family. So, even if most families' Christmas celebrations will take place on a living room couch instead of a church pew, the message is the same."We love our savior, Jesus Christ and we still care and support each other even if we can't all be together," Watson said. 2707

SAN DIEGO — Corinne Lam was in the middle of cutting a client's hair when her phone started blowing up.Governor Newsom had just announced that several businesses - including salons - had to cease indoor operations.“We're going back to square one. Do not pass go. Do not collect 0,” she said.Lam was especially frustrated because her client at the time had COPD, making her high risk for Covid-19. Yet she trusted Lam enough to still come to Rancho Bernardo’s Salotto Salon, which was reserved entirely for her.“And knowing that she feels as safe as she does here, it was otherwise maddening,” Lam said.Newsom announced the new round of shutdowns Monday - forcing gyms, salons, and malls to cease indoor operations in 30 counties - including San Diego. The order came after an increase in covid related hospitalizations, ICU beds, and positivity testing rates. It will last until the state’s Public Health Officer deems it safe to reopen.“It's incumbent upon all of us to recognize soberly that Covid-19 is not going away anytime soon,” Newsom said. The decision leaves Lam and other business owners wondering how they'll survive. Like her, many have already exhausted their Paycheck Protection Program funds that helped get them through the first shutdown.“It's like we're jumping into a pool with no water,” she said. “So who is going to supply the water? I don't know.”Lam may be able to move her haircuts outside, but it's complicated. Plus, the concrete's sweltering, especially with masks and gloves. 1514
