It includes adding galvanized bolts to the foundation, forming sheer walls and adding metal braces to certain connection points. Geologist Pat Abbott said while viewing footage from the recent quake in Mexico he noticed the collapsed buildings likely were missing up-to-date joinery between the floors and walls. “As long as [the floor and walls] move as a unit, the structure is intact,” he said. The City of San Diego offers resources to check your home on their website. They also have information on renovations for unreinforced masonry buildings, typically built before 1933. 903

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two families will forever be connected after an organ donation saves the life of a woman struggling with heart disease for nearly a decade. Susan Amador's son, David Rivera died, at the age of 30, in 2017 of a brain bleed, caused by a rare clotting disorder. The 30-year-old left behind a 4-year-old and his fiancee. Rivera was a registered organ donor and his organs helped save the lives of five people. His heart was donated to a woman named Sandra, of Chula Vista. On Monday, Rivera's family met the woman who now carries their loved ones' heart. The meeting was made possible through Lifesharing Donate Life, an organization that coordinates organ and tissue donation in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Rivera's mom hopes her story will encourage more people to sign up to be organ donors. 824

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wasting away in "Margaritaville" will soon be an option much closer to home.The site of downtown's Solamar Hotel will be renovated to make way for the Margaritaville Hotel, set to open in 2021. The hotel will include 235 guest rooms and plenty of signature Margaritaville food and drink concepts for visitors.The renovation and full conversion of the hotel is expected to cost about million.RELATED: Margaritaville Island Resort coming to San Diego“We are excited to announce our second hotel in affiliation with Margaritaville in San Diego,” said Jon Bortz, CEO of Pebblebrook Hotel Trust. “The downtown location in San Diego’s famed Gaslamp Quarter will provide convention goers, leisure guests and corporate travelers a unique experience in very close proximity to the city’s dining, entertainment and retail venues ... The Gaslamp Quarter property will be a terrific complement to our Margaritaville Island Resort San Diego which was announced last year.”By 2021, Paradise Point Resort & Spa on Vacation Isle Park in Mission Bay will also see a similar transformation into the Margaritaville Island Beach Resort. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wherever a Topgolf is built in San Diego, it's bound to tee-up some criticism.But as it stands, a potential East Harbor Island location facing golfers toward the downtown skyline may not end up being an option.The Board of Port Commissioners decided to delay a decision earlier this month on entering an exclusive negotiation agreement with Topgolf.RELATED: Gaslamp Quarter thoroughfare may become a promenadeThe Port directed staff to begin mapping out an agreement with Topgolf late last year. East Harbor Island was floated as a potential location at the time. But an agreed upon location must be chosen first before the negotiation starts.During the Feb. 11 meeting, commissioners were presented a study on developing the Harbor Island site and how Topgolf could work into that plan. Three diagrams showed the site's possibilities, with or without Topgolf:A "phase one" diagram included a potential Topgolf plus a 400-space parking lot and 500-room hotel and parking structure on the east side of the island. The "phase two" rendering kept Topgolf and the east-end hotel, but added a hotel development to the facility's west side that could have a shared parking structure with Topgolf.The final diagram depicted three hotel developments on the East Harbor Island land, without Topgolf. All the diagrams were meant to be illustrative of potential ideas of the site, not an official plan. "I'm just not feeling it ... I just feel that it's an expensive use. It's a lot of land.""It seems to me we have one decision or one issue we need to discuss, which is do we want to have Topgolf in this location," said chair Anne Moore. "Quite frankly, I feel I can be convinced either way."Other commissioners shared in the idea that while Topgolf would be exciting for the area, it may not be the best use of the land.RELATED: Poway bowling alley to close in latest big change to busy corridorBefore deciding, the board requested more information on Topgolf's revenue, ways to reduce the parking area, and other ideas for the East Harbor Island site.
