The Mississippi Senate moved one step closer Tuesday to passing a law that would prevent women from getting abortions after they are 15 weeks pregnant. If the law passes, it would be the earliest abortion limit measured in weeks of pregnancy to become law in the US.The Senate passed a version of House Bill 1510, known as the gestational age act, with minor changes regarding the penalty to providers who break the law. In its current form, doctors would lose their license to practice medicine and face civil penalties. The bill was sent back to the House for another vote, which is considered procedural. If this version passes the House vote, the bill would move to the governor's desk.Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant will sign the bill into law if it reaches his desk, his spokesperson told CNN.After the bill's vote, Bryant tweeted, "As I have repeatedly said, I want Mississippi to be the safest place in America for an unborn child. House Bill 1510 will help us achieve that goal."Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves said in a statement, "Mississippians are committed to protecting the lives of unborn children, and this law will be a major step in accomplishing that goal."Mississippi currently prohibits an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy unless "the woman's life is endangered, her physical health is severely compromised or there is a lethal fetal anomaly," according to the Guttmacher Institute.In all, 24 states have laws that ban abortions after a designated duration of pregnancy. Seventeen states, including Mississippi, ban abortions at about 20 weeks post-fertilization, according to Guttmacher.Planned Parenthood Director of State Policy Media, Danielle Wells, said she believes the law is unconstitutional. She cited a similar law in Arkansas that banned abortions at 12 weeks of pregnancy if a heartbeat was detected, which was struck down by a federal appeals court."Already, far too many women cannot access safe, legal abortions in Mississippi because of existing barriers and restrictions. If this measure passes, it would make a bad situation even worse for women," Wells told CNN.The bill was held on a procedural motion before returning to the House. The largest nutrition study in the world could change the way people eat as researchers indicate that your genes aren't the reason for your weight loss or gain.Susan Kim, 49, an Illinois mom, wife and teacher who was flat out fed up, and tired of struggling with her weight, a problem she's battled her whole life.“I was scrolling through my phone one day and I saw this study that I started reading- and I was intrigued,” Kim said.She admits she also wanted to prove a point to her husband of 20 years."He has maintained if I would only eat what he eats then my problems would be solved and there’s sugar in his food too and that’s a lie. That’s not the key,” Kim said.She signed up to be a part of The Predict Study commissioned by King’s College in London. A research team sent her everything she needed, including a box with a way to submit her blood, saliva and glucose.Researchers say the Predict study has allowed them to predict an individual's response to food.“The study showed us there’s no such thing as an average person-when it comes to food, we’re all different and unique and this is not something that food manufacturers or anyone else wants to tell you they want everyone to be the same,” Dr. Tim Spector, who is a senior researcher.Spector and his team of scientists gathered huge amounts of data, using Zoe, a data science company, and artificial intelligence to personalize nutrition.“The idea was to come up with enough information from research from very large studies around the world- and put it together in a format used in advertising and internet based procedures that would come up with algorithms that would tell an individual what the best way to eat is,” Spector said.The team worked off of probabilities, but they also have lots of new technology to use.“We can look at your gut microbes in a very detailed way,” Spector said. “We have glucose monitors that will tell you what your glucose level is. We’ve got finger prick tests people can do at home that will tell you what your blood fat is doing. We’ve got exercise monitors, sleep monitors and apps that record everything you’re doing and how you’re feeling every minute of the day.”There were identical twins in the study who had different responses to food. Hollywood actress Dame Emma Thompson also participated in the study."She has a big interest in health in general and as an actress, is always conscious of her health and her weight and wanted to find out more about nutrition,” Spector said about Thompson. “She claimed to have been on every diet under the sun and wanted to learn what the latest cutting-edge science was.”Spector says Thompson is doing well and is thoroughly enjoying what she's learning about her body. The personalized plans developed from the Predict study help you eat food that reduces inflammation. It's based off your biology, not deprivation popular fad diets.It's also not a diet or calorie restrictive plan, according to Spector.“We’re talking about every time you have French fries or too much carbohydrates or a big fatty load that stresses your blood and metabolism and if you keep getting these stresses, it builds up long term inflammation in your body,” he said. “Your body is always stressed and reacting like its infected or fighting something.”Kim has lost about 12 pounds in 5 weeks, and says that's purely by logging food, using the soon to be launched Zoe App and paying attention to how her body responds to certain foods. The at home test kit is based on tests but allows people to pay attention to their own biology.For Kim, that meant paying attention to what things caused her blood sugar to spike, and which meals are the best for her to function.“It’s personalized just for me,” Kim said. “It cuts through all of the confusion of what to eat. It’s incredibly simple, I’m never hungry or deprived (with) no emphasis on counting calories no buying packaged meals.”Researchers say they've got an explosion of data that will move dieters from the stone age to the modern world of nutrition, one that reduces a short term problem, for long term results. That exposed me to a lot of poverty, a lot of primitive forms of agriculture that was practiced in different parts of the world,” Chandra said.Now with a Ph.D. in computer science, he's directed that interest and curiosity toward a program within Microsoft that he leads called FarmBeats."Through this project, we want to build digital tools that can empower farmers worldwide, make their lives better, make the food they produce better,” Chandra said.Like its name, FarmBeats is centered around farms. Chandra and his team are working to bring computers and their data to farms. What if you could bring all the benefits of things like artificial intelligence, cutting edge computing and the latest digital tech to agriculture? Imagine just how it could improve a farmer's life and work.“Humans and machines need to work together. All the latest technologies we’re building when combined with human knowledge you can take them to a completely different level,” Chandra said.That next level is evident in a new partnership between Land O'Lakes and Microsoft.“Imagine a computer sitting in the barn, getting a lot of data from cameras and sensors so it can detect how the different cows are doing, whether it’s sick and in heat, what’s happening with each cow,” Chandra said.But, none of that can happen unless there's broadband. It hit us right in the face we’re talking about some really neat capabilities and technologies but we couldn’t use them because we didn’t have that connectivity in rural America,” said Teddy Bekele, chief technology officer at Land O'Lakes.Land O'Lakes, which brings you butter, milk and cheese, is also a farmer-owned cooperative with 2,000 dairy producers, 1,000 retailers and 300,000 farmers.“Having one farmer connected is not enough,” Bekele said, “you’ve got to have the whole community connected and if you think about bringing technology, it’s not just the household. We want the whole field.”He says drone footage bringing you data about your fields does not work if you don't have internet.“We’ve been working on a lot of novel solutions to bring to farmers, things from remote sensing, satellite and drone images to using crop models that use machine learning capabilities to help farmers make better decisions as well as a platform that helps with sustainability,” Bekele said.Farmers know so much about land. Technology will take the guesswork out of the farming industry. Things like how much you should water, when and where mapped out by data.“One of the things we’re building is a digital dairy platform, bringing different dairy management tools into one umbrella. You can have one place where you can get all the data and then start using it to create insights” says Chandra.And while data-driven solutions for a modern world won't happen overnight, the two companies are aiming at a worldwide agriculture transformation in a few years, in hopes of forever changing our food supply, our food system and our sustainability. 3691

  

The nation’s air traffic control system is losing controllers faster than it can hire people, according to the Air Traffic Controllers union.“If we don't have enough controllers to open all the positions and we have to combine up positions we have to reduce the capacity,” said Paul Rinaldi, the union’s president.He says the effects of not enough controllers have affected flights in the past."We have seen some situations last summer where we didn't have enough controllers at the facility where airlines did cancel flights," he said. "Right now we're at a 30-year low of certified controllers in a system."In 2017, 1,848 controllers left the job due to retirements, promotions or other reasons, according to the FAA’s Controller staffing report released this year.The FAA hired 1,880 people to be new controllers last year. That’s a gain of 32 controllers. But of the number hired, the FAA lost 735 people who did not pass the required training academy.Only 1,145 passed, far fewer than the number of controllers who left the job last year."We'll keep trying to keep up with attrition and we haven't been able to do that," Rinaldi said.He says if the problem isn’t addressed differently than it currently is, we can expect to be inconvenienced in the future when we fly."You will have some delays on the ground maybe even holding in the air depending on what the staffing looks at looks like at that facility," Rinaldi said. 1435

  

The new romaine lettuce recall is causing many to change up their Thanksgiving Day menus.A popular vegan restaurant and catering company, Pianta, is one place affected by the recall.“We use romaine every day,” says restaurant owner Michael Moon. “We use about two to three cases of romaine every week, so it's pretty significant.”The restaurant has thrown out all of its romaine lettuce.“Essentially, we're just throwing away money,” Moon says.However, Pianta’s owner says it’s only a small cost to pay for the safety of his customers.“We don't want to be associated with some sort of outbreak here as a plant-based restaurant. It's scary.”Until further notice, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning everyone to throw out any and all romaine lettuce. That includes prewashed bag lettuce, as well as any other foods stored with it or touching it.Health officials also to clean out your refrigerator and counter.Moon says the recall is scary, because this is just the latest recall impacting his vegan, plant-based restaurant.“We've seen this with spinach; we've seen it with romaine; we've seen it with kale,” Moon says. “So, for someone like us, it's sort of the bedrock of what we're doing here, so it's obviously a big concern.The CDC is trying to find the source of the E. coli outbreak, which so far has sent dozens of people to the hospital, both in the United States and Canada. 1418
