SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Birch Aquarium welcomed two new residents to its waters this month, a first-ever for the aquarium.Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography bred and hatched two rare Weedy Seadragons for the first time, making the aquarium one of the few in the world to now house the fish. The fragile newborns, native to southern Australia, are under an inch long, but have already started eating tiny shrimp. The birth is the product of the aquarium's conservation efforts for the once "near threatened" sea life.RELATED: Rainbow Eucalyptus trees blooming across San Diego“We are elated to have breeding success with our Weedy Seadragons. This is a momentous event for our team and our seahorse and seadragon breeding program,” said Jennifer Nero Moffatt, the aquarium’s senior director of animal care, science and conservation. “Seadragons are charismatic, sensitive, and require detailed husbandry. We have spent over 25 years working with these animals and love that we have made the next steps to conserve this delicate species.”Weedy Seadragons perform an elaborate mating display, spinning snout-to-snout and moving up and down in a water column to transfer eggs from the female onto the male's tail, where they are fertilized and hatched 6 weeks later. This is the first instance of the seadragon's fertilization and hatching occurring at the aquarium.RELATED: San Diego Symphony's 'The Shell' gets opening dateThe fish is now listed as "least concern" on the endangered species list, partially due to a lack of population data. The fish's habitat and camouflage make it extremely difficult to locate in the wild. But, they are still threatened by climate change, warming waters, compromised habitats, and fishing.“This is an exciting day for Birch Aquarium. Not only are these births a major accomplishment for our talented Husbandry team, but also an exciting step in our commitment to conservation ,” said Harry Helling, Birch Aquarium's executive director. While the newborn Weedy Seadragons are not on display for the public due to yearly habitat deep-cleaning, the aquarium's "Seadragons & Seahorses" exhibit is open for guests. 2168

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- City Council members Friday announced a plan to push for a temporary shelter for the homeless in Murphy Canyon.Council members Lorie Zapf and David Alvarez will hold a news conference Monday to request that a shelter be built at the former Chargers training facility. The complex, owned by the city, has remained unused since the Chargers moved to Los Angeles and will likely remain vacant for several more years.Announcing the press conference, the councilmembers said, “The San Diego River has seen an explosion of homeless encampments this year. This is an environmental nightmare and extremely dangerous with the rainy season rapidly approaching.”More than 100 homeless encampments were counted by volunteers with the San Diego River Park Foundation in October. 792

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As former San Diego State star Kawhi Leonard readies for his Los Angeles Clippers debut Tuesday, another Aztec will also start the season on an active NBA roster.SDSU's Jalen McDaniels was signed to a multi-year contract and placed on the 17-man roster for the Charlotte Hornets Sunday, the team announced. McDaniels left SDSU after his sophomore season last spring and was picked 52nd overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. The 6-10 forward led the Aztecs in rebound average, total steals, and was second in scoring average last season. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As more San Diegans are working from home during the coronavirus outbreak, more pets are finding new families — but care extends past any quarantine orders.Helen Woodward Animal Center says the center has seen an uptick in adoptions, nearly doubling normal adoption rates at the center last weekend. Many of those new pet parents came from educational backgrounds."We met professors, teachers, and counselors who had all been asked to work remotely and suddenly had lots of hours in a quiet house," said Helen Woodward Animal Center Adoptions Services Manager Dora Dahlke. "Grad students, too, who were now doing on-line classes, were seeking the company of a new pet."RELATED: Helen Woodward launches 'critter cam' amid social distancingDahlke adds that working from home allows new pet parents to spend more time training their new family members. At Rancho Coastal Humane Society, adoptions are also up with half of people being serious and the other half looking "for something to do," according to John Van Zante with RCHS. RCHS temporarily closed on Friday.San Diego Humane Society says the center has seen an opposite effect, with adoptions down since February.RELATED: San Diego County libraries go digital to fight spread of coronavirus"Since the first week of February and through the first four days of this week, our adoption numbers have decreased significantly," Nina Thompson with SDHS said. "Of course, we wish this was not the case. Now more than ever the animals need our help, so we truly encourage the public to welcome a new family member into their home."But as Zante notes, welcoming a pet is not a two-week affair. Once schedules return to normal, that new family member will require the same care and attention."One lady asked me if she could come in and adopt a pet for two weeks then bring it back when she returns to work. Told her that probably wouldn't be good for her and definitely would not be a good idea for the pet," Zante said. "In two weeks the pet would have started to bond with her, then have its life turned upside down."RELATED: How to work out from home during San Diego's COVID-19 gym closureIn that instance, those who are looking for an animal fix can utilize other means. Helen Woodward has started a daily "critter cam" to live stream its animals and will offer educational programming. The San Diego Zoo also has several lives streams of animals in its parks and education online. 2455
