Samuel Oliver-Bruno left a sanctuary church in North Carolina to meet immigration officials, fearing he'd never come back.Oliver-Bruno had an appointment with immigration officials to provide fingerprints and discuss a petition to delay his deportation. He was accompanied by faith leaders and other supporters Friday for the 13-mile trip to the offices in the Raleigh-area.About 20 minutes after he walked into the offices of US Citizenship and Immigration Services, agents dressed in plainclothes arrested him.Faith leaders and church members quickly formed a human wall around the vehicle taking him to detention, and would not leave. They locked arms around the agents' unmarked gold-colored van and prayed for about two hours. They sang "Amazing Grace" and other worship songs."Let him stay!" they yelled. "Let your people go!" 839
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A former supervisor in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has been convicted in connection with a green card fraud scheme that bilked immigrants out of millions of dollars.Johnny Martin was convicted in San Diego federal court Friday of making a false statement to a federal agent. He faces up to five years in prison. The U.S. attorney's office says Martin passed confidential information from law enforcement databases to crooks who posed as Homeland Security agents and conned more than 100 immigrants into paying exorbitant fees for green cards they never received. When the FBI interviewed Martin in 2017, he denied passing on information. However, prosecutors say there's no evidence Martin knew the information was being used for a con.Three men involved in the scam have pleaded guilty. 823
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A convicted rapist wanted in New York for violating his parole by leaving the state pleaded not guilty Monday in a San Diego courtroom to burglary charges. Dale Dulac, 57, faces charges in San Diego of auto burglary and possession of stolen property, according to the District Attorney's Office. Dulac is being held on 0,000 bail for the San Diego charges, said George Modlin, deputy district attorney. But he also remains jailed as a fugitive from New York, where authorities say he violated the terms of his parole on Sept. 20 by leaving the state. San Diego police arrested Dulac Friday after officers recognized him walking in the 1500 block of Imperial Avenue. New York authorities said last week that Dulac had been spotted at a San Diego bus station and in San Marcos. According to media reports out of New York, Dulac was released on parole in 2015. He served more than 20 years in prison for raping a woman in 1992. 953
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Marine Corps officials say the pilot of a fuel tanker showed impressive skills when he touched down safely in a remote area of California and prevented injuries among the seven other crew members after a mid-air collision with a fighter jet. A Marine Corps spokesman said Wednesday it's unclear what happened to cause the F-35B to collide with the KC-130J tanker near the town of Thermal in the late afternoon Tuesday. The jet pilot ejected successfully. The jet was refueling when the collision occurred. The tanker came in on its belly in a field."It was an impressive maneuver bringing it down safely by force," 1st Lt. Brett Vannier, a spokesman at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, told the AP. "His skills kind of speak to itself just in the fact that everyone survived.""I think the KC-130 crew did a masterful job of airmanship to get that baby down," added aviation safety consultant and retired Marine Corps Col. Pete Field, a former director of the Naval Test Pilot School. 1006
