SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld San Diego revealed Tuesday that its newest roller coaster will open this spring. "Emperor", named after the biggest species of penguin, which can be seen at the park's popular "Penguin Encounter" attraction."It will be the tallest, fastest, longest, and the only floorless dive coaster in the state of California and the entire west coast of North America," said Senior Vice President of Attractions Mike Denninger.RELATED: SeaWorld's new dive coaster will be named 'Emperor'The ride reaches 153 feet at its tallest point, tops 60 miles per hour, and includes multiple inversions. The centerpiece of the ride, however, is the 90-degree, straight down drop. Denninger says the train will freeze for a few seconds just after going over the edge, ratcheting up the anticipation, while also offering unparalleled views of SeaWorld and Mission Bay. "I think it will be wonderful. Very thrilling," Denninger said.10News joined a group of invited guests for a tour of the work site Tuesday, which included several bloggers who write about roller coasters. "We haven't had anything like this west of the Mississippi and the views of the bay, I think, are going to be awesome" 1391

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego’s unemployment rate is near historic lows, but plenty of people are still out of work. 10News is exploring ways to help you improve your competitive edge in the job market. “I freelance, and I have a part-time job that has been helping me get through,” said Katie Orchard, who has been looking for full-time work for the past four months. Orchard is in search of stability, but in a competitive job market, that search becomes more difficult. RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Hiring growth reported in all San Diego fields“It’s hard, it’s hard for everybody,” said OrchardCurrently, the unemployment rate in San Diego as of April 2019 is at 3 percent. However, the employment rate in San Diego is also down. With a job market continually changing, how do you improve your edge and stand out?According to Allie Barara and Dana Ellison, both recruiters at Creative Circle in San Diego, the key to standing out, is your resume. RELATED: LIST: Jobs available for retirees“Because there are so many people looking for positions they get lost in the shuffle, and they are not hearing back. It’s kinda like that black hole of the unknown once you submit your resume,” said Allie Barara. Barara says, job candidates need to be specific with programs and software. “I think what a lot of people miss on their resume, is that they don’t spell out the specific softwares they are proficient in. I think showing that at the top of their resume is really going to highlight and give you those extra buzzwords,” said Barara. Another way to make your resume stand out is including or obtaining certificates in your specific field of interest. RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Single mom uses free training to switch careers“The world is becoming so digital in general, so any digital certifications you can get, Google AdWords, Facebook Ads Manager, Facebook Analytics, anything like that. But also the specific softwares and CMS’ will really stick out to employers. They want you to have the experience, but having that certification to back it up, will also go a long way as well,” Barara said. According to Dana Ellison, a senior recruiter, a common mistake job seekers make is not applying for the right job.“I say titles are a little nebulous. If you see a job and say hey this describes all the skill sets I do, but it’s not how I’m marketing myself, that would be a great way to start,” said Ellison. Ellison also suggests job seekers ditch the fluff words to make room for things that matter. “If someone says they are a good communicator, a team player, a fast learner, those are things literally everyone says, so those things can be left off,” said Ellison. Both Ellison and Barara also suggest being patient and confident in your work. See the Creative Circle resume guide here. 2813

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some parents at a San Diego Unified School District campus are asking district officials for help with challenges they say are brought on by new, later start times. This fall, three schools implemented SDUSD's "Healthy Start Times" program, beginning classes at 8:35 a.m. The District has cited multiple studies that show later start times have positive effects on the health and academic performances of students.RELATED: Three San Diego schools to switch to later start times in 2019But some parents say the District isn't doing enough to help families who still have to drop their students off at school before 8 am, so the parents can get to work on time.Angel Caturay is one of those parents. He drops his son, Angel Miles, off at the San Diego School for Creative and Performing Arts at 7:30 a.m. each morning. Angel Miles then has to wait outside of the school's locked gates until 8 am.10News went by the school at 7:40 a.m. on Thursday morning and found more than two dozen other students also waiting. Some said they had been there since 7 am. Aside from one parking lot attendant, there was no adult supervision. The gates at SCPA don't open until 8 a.m. School begins at 8:35 a.m."Who's responsible?" Caturay asks. "When you drop your kids off, you feel the school should be responsible while they're here at school."In a statement, a district spokesperson told 10News that, "Students left without supervision is a safety risk... the principal has been working with parents to help them identify solutions."Caturay wants to know if the library, cafeteria or classroom could be opened for students to wait in. His son says it's challenging to use that time for homework."There's a lot of groups just sitting down and talking," says Angel Miles. "There are no tables. You're bending your back over, and that can get uncomfortable."The District addressed the issue in a letter to parents last year. Part of it reads, "just because some parents may be unable to provide healthy sleep hours for their teens does not mean that school district policy should prevent all of their teen students from getting the amount of sleep doctors say they need to be healthy and safe."The District plans to have every high school go to the later start times by next fall. Meanwhile, the California Legislature recently passed SB 328. The new law will require all middle and high schools in the state to start later in the day. It specifies start times no earlier than 8 am for middle schools, and 8:30 a.m. for high schools.Governor Newsom has not signed the bill yet, and it wouldn't go into effect until 2022. Former Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a similar bill in 2018, saying start times are an issue that individual school districts need to decide.RELATED: Proposed bill would require later start times for middle and high schoolsCaturay says he understands the decision that SDUSD made. When he emailed the principal at SCPA, he was told about the District's bus program. District files show that costs 0 per year for the first student, 0 for the second. Caturay says he can't afford that, and neither can many other families. He hopes the District can do a little more to accommodate families like his. "It would be nice if they could open up the library," he says. "At least they (the students) could get some work done, study work ahead of time. Then their time wouldn't be wasted just sitting here." 3429
