SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— A Poway family is urging people to be aware of a possible new scam that may be luring people away from their homes. One resident says she was almost tricked by a caller who claimed to be an SDG&E employee. A voicemail was left for the Chavez family, saying crews needed to do some work on equipment in the area. It stated, “It requires a helicopter. The helicopter is required from the FAA to have certain properties, like yourself, evacuate the home.”Katharine Chavez says she called the company to confirm. “(They) said let me check your area and came back and said there’s no work planned in your area.”Chavez says she wants to make sure others don’t fall victim to scammers. “It's scary, and you work hard for your stuff,” said Chavez. “To have someone come in and try to take what you work for, or your neighbors, just go out and make your own money.”SDG&E says under FAA regulations they are required to notify residents and evacuate homes for special construction projects, such as transporting a new utility pole by helicopter. The company says you should always ask for SDG&E identification if you have suspicions about a worker coming to your home. 1197
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- We've all seen the nasal swabs being pushed far up noses to test for coronavirus. And if you've had it done, you know it's uncomfortable. But more tests are being developed where all you have to do is spit into a tube."You basically open up your mouth, we collect a tiny bit of saliva and you're done. Your side is done," said Dr. Henry Ji, President and CEO of San Diego based Sorrento Theraputics.According to Ji, the biopharma company is on track to start producing a rapid saliva test developed by researchers at Columbia University.It's being called "COVI TRACE" and it can be used almost anywhere.It gives results in about 30 minutes, with the liquid color changing from red to yellow if it's positive for Covid-19.Preliminary results indicate the test has high accuracy rates.Sorrento also says "COVI TRACE" is highly sensitive, meaning it can detect the presence of Covid-19 very early on.Sorrento executives say they plan to submit the test for FDA approval within the next few weeks."While the FDA is reviewing and leading up to review we are gearing up to manufacture hundreds of thousands and millions of tests; eventually anticipating about a hundred million tests a month," said Sorrento's Henry Brunswick.As for the cost, Ji says they're trying to keep it widely affordable, at around .At this point there's no estimate for when the rapid saliva "COVI TRACE" test could be approved by the FDA, but Sorrento is submitting an emergency use request in hopes of speeding up the process. 1528
SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A new interactive facility is teaching students the importance of water in our environment. Doors to the "Hydro Station" opened Thursday morning in Chula Vista.School leaders say this is a new way to get kids excited about learning about jobs in the water industry. The Hydro Station will host learning exhibits and hands-on activities to introduce students to the ecological cycle of water, water conservation, water quality, and more. "Human beings need water," says Matt Tessier with the Chula Vista Elementary School District. "We need water to survive. That's one of the things that kids really understand."Four thousand five hundred kids will get the chance to experience the Hydro Station annually. Its located at the Sweetwater Authority's Groundwater Desalination Facility. The Hydro Station is made possible through a partnership between the Sweetwater Authority, Chula Vista Elementary School District and Otay Mesa Water District. With rising rents and mortgage rates increasing, experts say that trend is about to get worse.“On November 5 my family and I are going to be homeless because it’s very hard to find places,” said Margot Velez.Velez is being evicted from her apartment, the complex she’s called home for nearly a decade. Those are eviction lawsuits.A report by the group Tenants Together, a statewide organization for tenants’ rights, stated landlords file an average of 166,337 eviction lawsuits annually in California, with a total of 499,010 households facing eviction in the three-year period. According to Curry’s website, “After receiving an UNLAWFUL DETAINER [sic], the tenant/occupant must respond timely or lose the case. If you are personally served, you have only five calendar days to respond. If someone is served for you, you may have an additional 10 days. Weekends are counted but the last day to respond cannot land on a weekend (or holiday). If it does, the 'last day' carries over to the next business day. There are many defenses which can be raised.”Curry said tenants should know their rights and try to talk with the landlord ahead of time.
