OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Outside the Star Theatre in Oceanside is a recently completed mural designed exclusively for the space and ushering in a wave of public art. "We want to create a place where people can feel welcome," said Gumaro Escarcega with Main Street Oceanside, the group that started the project called "Art that Excites."Their goal is to fund 10 new murals at places all over downtown Oceanside. The funding comes completely from events hosted by Mainstreet Oceanside and donations.LIFE IN OCEANSIDE:Oceanside's brewery scene helps spur city's growthFrom 'Ocean Side' to region's third-largest city5 places to spend the day in OceansideMayor Pete Weiss talks Life in OceansideAs for the artists, Escarcega says, "This project is open to the public, open to anyone who is willing to work as a muralist."The community ultimately votes on their favorites. In the case of the Star Theatre, the winning design was one from a local artist named "Skywalker.""The idea here is to create a nice, beautiful, public art piece that tells a story," explained Escarcega. The next mural is planned for Northern Pine Brewing and That Boy Good BBQ.For more information on Oceanside's murals, visit Main Street Oceanside's website. 1237

On a typical day, police officers make more than 50,000 traffic stops.According to the Stanford Open Policing Project, which looked at nearly 100 million traffic stops, there are significant racial disparities in policing.Black drivers are stopped more frequently than white drivers, and Black and Hispanic drivers are more likely to be searched.“The public has to have confidence and trust in highway safety enforcement and law enforcement and that trust has been reduced because of recent events,” said Jonathan Adkins, Executive Director at the Governors Highway Safety Association. The association came out with its first ever recommendations on how to reduce racism in traffic enforcement. They include making sure the demographics of law enforcement officers match the communities they serve, collecting data on race in traffic enforcement, incorporating that data in grants and funding, and getting perspectives from minorities and low-income communities. The association doesn't believe widespread agency defunding or pulling officers from stops is the answer.“If someone is speeding, driving aggressively, driving drunk, you don’t want a social worker pulling them over, that needs to be a law enforcement officer with a weapon to protect him or herself,” said Adkins. The association points to more training on racism, bias and de-escalation.Another important component to building public trust is positive stops.“If someone is doing the right thing and you have an encounter with them, give them a dollar certificate for ice cream, give them an award, thanks for having your child buckled up correctly in the backseat,” said Adkins.Adkins says at the same time, you don’t want to pull back on traffic enforcement. He says we saw the results of that early on in the COVID-19 pandemic. More people were speeding and traffic deaths were up. 1853

On World Autism Awareness Day, Monday, April 2, Pennsylvania theme park Sesame Place announced that it was the first theme park in the world to complete training to become a Certified Autism Center (CAC). The park's certification was granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). IBCCES says that Sesame Place is "the first theme park in the world to receive such a distinction."Sesame Place is located at 100 Sesame Road in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. The park features rides, shows, parades, and full size characters and opens for the season on April 28 at 10:00 a.m.The Sesame team members were trained in sensory awareness, motor skills, autism overview, program development, social skills, communication, environment, and emotional awareness, so that staff members can cater to all guests who visit the park. One of the most helpful outcomes of this certification is the IBCCES?Sensory Guide, which breaks down each of the rides' stimuli. This guide grades the rides in terms of touch, taste, sound, smell, and sight stimulation. The senses are scored from 1, which is a low stimulation, to 10, which is a high stimulation. The park has quiet rooms for guests needing to recover from sensory stimulation from the rides. They also have noise-canceling headphones, or WhispEars, on a first come, first served basis for guests with hearing sensitivity. The park has special areas people can go to and still enjoy parades, without being overwhelmed with direct character interaction. Guests can also take pictures with Julia, a Sesame Street character with autism. Additional resources include Autism Travel, which can help parents explore travel options, and a workshop called See Amazing in All Children, which offers tips to simplify daily life and grow support in the community.Sesame Place has many more options to accommodate with guests needs.
