At Dayton Consolidated School in Maine, one student has inspired a big change to the curriculum. Morey Belanger, a 6-year-old kindergartener, is the school's first deaf student. To make her feel welcome, the school embraced the opportunity to teach all the students some sign language.Sign language posters now line the walls of hallways, and students have learned how to sign more than 20 words including colors, letters and words related to school."Morey -- without even knowing it -- has taught us so much," said school Principal Kimberly Sampietro. "She has brought a culture to our building that we didn't have before."The school installed a hearing assistive system and implemented extra teacher training to incorporate sign language into every classroom, including core subjects, music and computer class. Sampietro said many teachers also began using their free time to watch sign language videos and read books on special education. The kindergarten class is also getting some help from Morey."Morey helped all of them to learn the alphabet," Sampietro said. "The kids have just really embraced her. They look up to her, they want her around, and they want to partner with her."Morey's mom, Shannon Belanger, said her family has been blown away by how supportive the school has been."I absolutely feel like it makes her feel welcomed," Belanger said. "I think all the kids feel excited that they know another language and I think they think it's fun."To celebrate the students' hard work, the school invited a real-life princess who knows sign language to come speak to students this week."We wanted to show our students that this isn't something they can only speak with Morey," said Principal Sampietro, who said most students in their rural Maine school have not encountered many people with hearing impairment. "We wanted to show them that signing happens in all kinds of settings."Morey's mom said she loves art and performing. So when Cinderella came to sing to the entire elementary, she helped with the singing and the signing, of course. 2067

An Australian man who was injured in a volcanic eruption in New Zealand more than a month ago has died, becoming the 20th victim of the disaster, officials said Monday.Paul Browitt and his two daughters were caught in the Dec. 9 eruption on White Island. The body of Krystal Browitt, 21, was among six recovered from the island in the days after the eruption.Paul Browitt and his daughter Stephanie Browitt, 23, survived the eruption and were transferred to Alfred Hospital in their hometown of Melbourne three days after the disaster.A police statement confirmed Paul Browitt died on Sunday night as a result of injuries from the eruption. A hospital statement said he had been critically ill.Maria Browitt, the wife and mother of the victims, had remained on a ship while her family took a day trip to the island.Of 23 victims who remain in hospitals in New Zealand and Australia, at least five are listed as in critical condition, health authorities said. Authorities won’t comment on the conditions of two victims in Sydney at the request of relatives.Alfred Hospital said it was continuing to give specialized burn care to two volcano victims transferred there. They are Stephanie Browitt and Lisa Dallow, 48, of Adelaide. The hospital said one of the patients was in critical condition and the other was in stable condition. The hospital would not say which of the women was critical.Dallow’s husband Gavin Dallow, 53, and daughter Zoe Hosking, 25, were killed on the island.White Island, also known by its Maori name, Whakaari, is the tip of an undersea volcano about 50 kilometers (30 miles) off New Zealand’s North Island and was a popular tourist destination before the eruption. Many of those killed and injured were from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Ovation of the Seas. Many people have questioned why tourists were still allowed on the island after New Zealand’s GeoNet seismic monitoring agency raised the volcano’s alert level on Nov. 18 from 1 to 2 on a scale where 5 represents a major eruption, noting an increase in sulfur dioxide gas, which originates from magma.New Zealand authorities are investigating the circumstances around the disaster. The volcano remains at an alert level of 2, indicating moderate to heightened unrest. 2262

Canadian officials on Thursday said that seven people were killed in a plane crash in Kingston, Ontario, which is located along Lake Ontario, near the border with New York. According to CTV, three children were among those killed in Wednesday's plane crash. An official from Canada's Transportation Safety Board said weather may have been a factor. Winds in the area reached 50 MPH around the time of the crash."Pilots are always faced with, you know, obtaining the latest weather, looking at the forecast, looking at the weather along different stations and the weather from one station may vary greatly from another station," Ken Webster from the Transportation Safety Board said. "So at this point, all we have to go on is is we know that it was a deteriorating to some point. So we have to look into exactly the route of the aircraft, where and how the weather was along his route and when he got here, what it was like. So that's what we need to do."The plane took off from Toronto's Buttonville Municipal Airport, and was attempting to land at the airport in Kingston. It is believed that the plane was stopping in Kingston on its way to Quebec City. CTV reported that the plane was an American aircraft. The identities of the seven on board have not been released. There were no survivors, officials said. 1324
