CINCINNATI -- A Lebanon Correctional Institution inmate was sentenced to three years in federal prison for mailing threatening letters to President Donald Trump and other federal officials, authorities announced Monday.Rodney D. Cydrus, 48, mailed a total of five letters in January 2017 to the FBI and Federal Public Defender's Office threatening to injure them, federal judges and the president, according to court documents.In one letter, Cydrus wrote that he wanted to "go out with a bang" by killing or kidnapping a federal agent."As soon as I get out I’m going to get everybody I can in your office…Die Die Die…I promise my word I’ll get at least 30 of you before you kill me," one letter states.One letter also included a powder that turned out to be Cydrus' own medication, causing a HAZMAT response. "The federal officials whom Cydrus targeted have hard enough jobs as it is," U.S. Attorney Benjamin Glassman said in a news release. "Disrupting operations and creating an atmosphere of fear is a serious offense, and it’s important to deter this kind of intimidation campaign."Cydrus was an inmate at Lebanon Correctional Institution in Warren County at the time he sent the letters.A federal grand jury indicted Cydrus in February 2017. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A developer wants to add 300 more units to the Otay Ranch project in Chula Vista, expanding the housing options on the 35 acre site.Baldwin and Sons, the developer behind the project, is asking for public input at a meeting Tuesday night. It's at 6:30 pm at the Residence Inn by Marriott at 2005 Centerpark Road in Chula Vista.Right now, the project, called Otay Ranch, calls for 600 multi-family units, a 2 acre park, 15,000 square feet of commercial retail and two hotels. One of the hotels opened in 2017 and construction on the 292 planned for-sale condos is underway.Now, they want to add 300 units to the plans."There's a real need for housing in this location," says Nick Lee, a spokesman for Baldwin and Sons.Under the original plans, 300 apartments would have been built, with most of them being two or three-bedroom units. The new plans call for 600 apartments, with 65% of them being either studio apartments or one-bedroom units.Lee says this will bring in more young professionals, instead of families with children. That will minmize the impact on nearby schools, which are all near capacity.People who live nearby are more concerned about the traffic problems that will come about with 1000 new homes in the area."It's unbearable," says Michelle Harrison. "I don't think anyone planned for the congestion we already see on a daily basis."Lee says the soon to open South Bay Rapid from MTS will alleviate some of the traffic problems. The apartments are a 5 minute walk to the Otay Ranch Station.He adds the developers have worked with the city and are keeping the project well within the bounds of the General Plan. Also, Lee says an updated Environmental Impact Review showed the additional housing will not create any greater impact on the area than the original plan.Lee says Tuesday's meeting will be important to find out what the people who live nearby want to see in the complex.The company hopes to have final plans approved by the City Council in the start of 2019, so construction can begin as soon as possible. 2079

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Two girls were hit and injured by a pickup truck in Chula Vista Monday afternoon, officers said.The crash happened about 3:45 p.m. on East H Street at Terra Nova Drive, just east of Interstate 805. The location is near a shopping center with a Taco Bell and Jack in the Box, and Clear View Elementary School. Ambulances rushed the girls, who appeared to be teenagers, to Rady Children’s Hospital. They were both conscious, according to Chula Vista Police.The driver of the silver Toyota Tacoma who hit the girls stopped, police said. There was no immediate report that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.A witness told police the driver had the green light at the time of the crash.10News is monitoring breaking developments. 771

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- A brand new health clinic for military veterans opened its doors in the South Bay Friday.The new Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) facility is located at 353 H Street, Chula Vista.The new VASDHS facility will replace the current clinic at 865 3rd Avenue, which opened in December 2015. It's three times the size of the facility it's replacing and will serve up to 25,000 veterans.The million clinic has 28 exam rooms,12 consultation rooms, and optometry and women's health and mental health services. In addition, the clinic will expand the capacity for appointments.Many veterans had to drive to La Jolla or Mission Valley for these services.Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the new VASDHS clinic is built with physical precautions like plexiglass separating the patients and staff at the front desk.According to the Veterans Affairs website, 529 veterans have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in San Diego County and have been treated within the health system. 1012

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man seen in a viral video being arrested by San Diego Police pleaded not guilty to theft charges Thursday. Trenelle Cannon will be in court again on Friday for reportedly resisting arrest. He is currently being held on ,000 bail. A 12-second-long video that surfaced on social media showed Cannon being struck by police officers. Video later released by police showed what happened in the moments leading up the incident. In the bodycam and helicopter video, Cannon can be seen tackling a police officer before other officers get involved. RELATED: Watch: San Diego Police respond to violent arrest videoCannon was arrested on warrants in Chula Vista Tuesday at about 6 p.m., according to his mother. He was booked into jail and charged with carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, robbery, and identity theft, according to SDPD."A 12 second video of this arrest was shared on social media without any context or details provided," police said in a news release.According to police, undercover officers had been conducting surveillance of Cannon on the 600 block of E Street in Chula Vista when they requested uniform officers to arrest him. SDPD Chief David Nisleit said Cannon then fled from officers, forcing police to give chase. At some point during the chase, a weapon was recovered where a witness last saw Cannon.Nisleit said Cannon was located once again in the area of 1100 4th Ave., where he got into a car with four others. The vehicle then proceeded to get onto Interstate 5, where officers conducted a traffic stop.During the traffic stop, Nisleit said Cannon tackled an officer to the ground, prompting multiple officers to assist in an arrest. Nisleit said officers feared Cannon had another weapon and used a "combination of physical force and distraction strikes" to restrain him."This is a very important key to note, once restrained and no longer a threat to officers no additional force was used on Cannon," Nisleit said.Nisleit said Cannon and the officers involved were not injured, aside from slight abrasions.Internal Affairs detectives were notified of the arrest and will evaluate officers' use of force and whether they followed policy. Based on the social media video and body-camera video, Nisleit said that he believed the appropriate amount of force was used by officers.Shakira Smith, who identifies herself as Cannon’s girlfriend, as well as Cannon’s mother spoke at a news conference Wednesday.Smith said she and Cannon were in a car with several friends when they were pulled over. She claims Cannon was pulled out of the car before being thrown to the ground. She then says officers piled on top of him.Smith made no mention of what happened before the couple got into the car, when police say Cannon led them on a chase, allegedly dropping a gun along the way.After screaming at police, Smith says she started recording the arrest. As she was recording, Smith says police told her: “put your phone away, you can’t do that.”The family and others said they wouldn't answer any questions following the news conference. 3103
