CHANGCHUN, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Floods have left 63 people dead and 59 missing in northeast China's Jilin Province over the past two months, local authorities said Monday.More than 4 million people have been affected since the flood season began in June and some 700,000 people have been evacuated, the Jilin Provincial Civil Affairs Department said in a statement.Additionally, about 62,000 houses have collapsed and 193,000 others have been damaged, along with 1.16 million hectares of cropland having been inundated, the statement said.Direct economic losses were estimated at almost 19 billion yuan (2.8 billion U.S. dollars), it added.In the hardest-hit areas, flash floods have cut roads, isolated villages and disrupted communications and water supplies.In the industrial city of Tonghua, torrential rains have damaged water pipelines, leaving 300,000 people without tap water for two days.Residents have largely relied on bottled water over the past 48 hours as authorities ordered 25 fire trucks to deliver water for domestic purposes aside from drinking to residential communities from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. everyday.About 1,700 tons of water had been delivered by truck, officials said.

HONG KONG, July 3 (Xinhua) -- A helicopter departing for Macao made an emergency landing in waters at Hong Kong Victoria Harbor on Saturday. All of 13 people on board were safely rescued.At around 12:04 noon (GMT 4:04), the Sky Shuttle type AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter, flight no. EMU2, made an emergency landing at sea about 500 meters northwest of Shun Tak Center at Sheung Wan, Hong Kong Island shortly after taking off."The pilot heard a loud bang at the back and decided to land on the waters," Acting Director General of the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) Leung Yu-keung said at a press briefing on Saturday that they will send some of the fittings broken down from the wreckage to Italy, where the copter was manufactured, for investigation. The crashed helicopter is salvaged on the sea area between the Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsular, south China, July 3, 2010. BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) - China's Ministry of Agriculture Friday urged local authorities in flood-hit regions to step up efforts to resume agricultural production and create favorable conditions for the autumn harvest following this summer's severe floods.Local departments were ordered to accelerate water drainage, restore damaged infrastructures, strengthen field management, and plant mung bean, potatoes and buckwheat, which have short growth periods, to make up for losses, according to an official from the ministry.The official also required departments to clear away and carry out bio-safety disposal of dead livestock, while increasing epidemic control measures.As of July 21, more than 7 million hectares of farmland in China had been destroyed by torrential rains and floods, according to data from the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

NEW YORK, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to recognise Nanjing City of China as a "Model for International Cooperation" in order to award the city's active involvement in cooperation with the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and this was the first Chinese city to win such an award, Li Jiansheng, executive chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday.The House passed the bill, tabled by Representative John Tierney of Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, Li said, adding that this will pave the way for further cooperation between China and the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are very conducive to build a stronger China in the future."I rise today to speak about a model for international cooperation that is said to hold promise and future opportunities for the United States," Tierney said when he was taking the floor at the House.
