SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County health officials today reported the death of a San Diego County man due to flu complications, bringing this flu season's death toll in the region to seven.The 73-year-old man died due to influenza A complications on Dec. 16, according to the county's Health and Human Services Agency.The man's vaccination status and medical history are still being investigated. The other six county residents who have died this season had additional medical conditions and either weren't vaccinated or their vaccination status was unknown."Influenza can be deadly, especially for the elderly and people with chronic medical conditions," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Getting a flu shot is the best way to prevent getting sick."At this time last year, 11 county residents had died due to flu complications. Last flu season was the county's worst in nearly 20 years of collecting data, with 342 residents succumbing to flu complications. Residents over the age of 65 with underlying medical conditions accounted for much of that death toll, according to the county.According to the county's weekly flu report for Dec. 16-22, lab- confirmed flu cases rose for the fourth consecutive week, from 290 to 410. That jump is a far cry, however, from the same week last flu season when reported cases spiked to 2,332. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect in the strangulation death of a City Heights woman a half-century ago was behind bars Tuesday following his out-of- state arrest last weekend, San Diego police reported.John Sipos, 75, was taken into custody Saturday in Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, on suspicion of murdering 24-year-old Mary Scott, who was found slain at her home in the 4000 block of 39th Street on Nov. 20, 1969, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs."The investigators exhausted all leads at the time, and the case eventually went cold," he said.Recently, cold-case investigators identified Sipos as Scott's alleged killer via forensic genealogy, said Dobbs, who declined to disclose further information about the circumstances of the homicide.Sipos was being held at Lehigh County Detention Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania, pending extradition to San Diego. 856

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As a county with the third highest population of veterans in the United States, San Diego County has multiple events Wednesday meant to honor those who served in the Armed Forces.Rep. Mike Levin, D-San Juan Capistrano, announced the formation of a panel of servicemembers, veterans, and other community leaders who will work together on recommendations to name either an Oceanside or San Diego Department of Veterans Affairs facility after a woman veteran.The VA Facility Dedication Advisory Panel will compile a report on notable women veterans with ties to the region who are worthy of the honor. Currently, there are no VA facilities in the United States that are named after women veterans, and neither the San Diego VA Medical Center nor the Oceanside VA Clinic are named after an individual.The panel is led by Army Veteran and Carlsbad resident Karin Brennan."Throughout our nation's history, women have served and sacrificed for our freedom just like men, but have often gone without the recognition they deserve," Levin said."It is past time to rectify that injustice and live up to our responsibility to honor all veterans, including women. It's disappointing that not a single VA facility in the country is named after a woman veteran, but we can change that here in our district."In September 2020, the VA released the 2020 Report of its Advisory Committee on Women Veterans. The committee made seven recommendations to VA, one of which is the inclusionary branding of VA facilities. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person at Southwestern College has tested positive for tuberculosis and may have exposed others to the disease, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday.The agency is working with the college to notify people who were possible exposed to TB. The period of possible exposure is from last Sept. 10 through Feb. 21, according to the HHSA.Tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infectious person. Most people who are exposed do not become infected."We are recommending that all the identified people get tested to make sure they are not infected," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the infectious form of the disease."The HHSA and college are reaching out to students and other members of the public who possibly interacted with the positive-testing individual. They can go to the college's Student Health Services Student Center, Room 601F, 900 Otay Lakes Road, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.Affected college employees will be tested separately by Occupational Health.The infected person was not publicly identified, nor did officials specify whether it was a student or staffer.Symptoms of active tuberculosis include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. Tuberculosis can be treated and cured with medication. People who have TB symptoms or are immuno-compromised are encouraged to see their medical health care provider to rule out TB.Tuberculosis is not uncommon in the San Diego region but has been decreasing since the early 1990s and has stabilized in recent years. In 2013, 206 cases were reported in the county, the lowest number since local TB cases peaked at 469 in 1993. There were 237 cases reported in 2017 and 226 in 2018.
