BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's drug watchdog has launched a campaign to expose and crack down on illegal spread and selling of drugs on the Internet."Food and drug administration departments at all levels should explore effective methods to stop the sale of fake or inferior-quality drugs, especially those advertised and sold on the Internet," said Shao Mingli, head of the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), Tuesday at a meeting.According to SFDA's monitoring on six major search engines including Google and Yahoo, after typing the key words of "medicine" plus a type of common disease, such as "diabetes" or "high blood pressure," 10 to 30 percent of search results contained illegal drug-related information.Figures show that, among 196 web pages being monitored, 96 percent did not have or failed to show certificates for drug-related trades or other services. Some 39 percent have no Internet Content Provider (ICP) records in the database of telecommunication management departments.ICP is a permit to run web sites in China.According to the SFDA, these illegal sites usually advertise or sell drug products in the name of large hospitals or research institutes. Some even forged pages of the SFDA drug database to fool buyers that their drugs had been approved by the administration. The campaign is part of a nationwide crackdown on the violation of intellectual property rights and the production and distribution of fake and shoddy products, which began earlier this month.

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Beijing should be tolerant and open-minded toward migrants as it tries to manage its fast-growing population in the next five years, said a Beijing political advisor responding to a government plan to limit the city's population.Excessive growth of Beijing's population, partly as a result of the influx of migrants, has brought tremendous pressure on the environment and resources, said Wu Yongping, a member of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on Sunday. But migrant population also made great contributions to the capital city's development, said Wu, also deputy director with the School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University,."Beijing, as a city belonging to the people of the whole country, should have the quality of openness," Wu told a press conference on the sidelines of the annual session of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPPCC.Also, Beijing should open to the entire world as only a tolerant and open-minded city could maintain its momentum of sustainable development, Wu said.Wu's remarks came in response to a draft development plan submitted Sunday to the annual session of the Beijing Municipal People's Congress, the local legislature.According to the draft plan, Beijing will rein in the "unordered and excessive" growth of its population during the next five years.By the end of 2009, Beijing's population had reached nearly 20 million, far exceeding the State Council-ratified target of controlling the population to within 18 million by the year 2020.

BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's government-run welfare lottery has raised a total of 164.5 billion yuan (24.8 billion U.S. dollars) for public welfare funds over the last 23 years, the Welfare Lottery Distribution and Management Center (WLDMC) announced Monday.Total sales of welfare lottery tickets had amounted to 500 billion yuan (75.2 billion U.S. dollars) since the lottery started operation in 1987, said a statement issued by the WLDMC.Half of the funds were allocated to social welfare projects organized by local governments, and the rest to public welfare funds or projects administered by central authorities, including the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA), said the statement. The civil affair authorities for the past 23 years had supported more than 200,000 projects for the public good, the statement said. The projects included social welfare institutions, child welfare associations, homes for the aged in villages and towns, and community service centers. The WLDMC is administered by the Ministry of Civil Affairs, which was authorized by the State Council to raise welfare funds through lottery sales in 1987.

BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Beijing will adopt tough water management measures in the next five years to ease acute water shortages, according to local water authorities. The measures include setting warning lines for the quantity of water consumption, efficiency of water use and water pollution levels within the metropolitan area, Bi Xiaogang, spokesman with the Beijing Water Authority, was quoted as saying by Monday's Beijing Daily.Local governments would be punished if they missed the targets, he said, adding it was the first time that such measures had been formulated. The measures, which were still being drafted by the municipal government, will be implemented during the first half of 2011, Bi was quoted as saying.Beijing has been plagued by drought for 12 years in a row, during which its per capita amount of water resources has been nearly halved to about 150 cubic meters. With nearly 20 million residents and more than 4.7 million vehicles, the metropolis has a water resource deficit of 400 million cubic meters, although it transferred 320 million cubic meters of water from neighboring Hebei Province last year.

BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) - China's urbanization would boost domestic demand by 30 trillion yuan (4.5 trillion U.S. dollars) by 2030, an official from a top think tank said Saturday. The country's urbanization expansion promises a huge potential in domestic demand, which will assure a stable economic development for China even if exports decline, Han Jun, vice director with the State Council's Development Research Center (SCDRC), said at a forum, adding that the urban migrants' demand for housing is likely to become the largest driving force for China's economic growth in the future.Additionally, Han noted that the core issue in China's urbanization is to allow farmers-turned-migrant workers to become permanent urban residents. In the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee's Proposal for Formulating the 12th Five-Year Program for China's Economic and Social Development (2011-2015), which was issued last month, authorities stressed that accelerating urbanization would be an important mission during the next five years.Data from the SCDRC indicates that China's urbanization rate hit 46 percent by the end of 2009, and will reach 63.6 percent by 2030, with the urban population standing at 930 million.
