France is bracing for yet another weekend of protests that could rock Paris and other parts of the country.Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said the government was deploying 89,000 security force members across France -- including 8,000 in the capital -- in case the demonstrations turn violent again.Many of the capital's famed sites -- including the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the Musée Delacroix and the Paris Opera -- will close over the weekend in advance of the protests, organized by the "gilets jaunes," or "yellow vest" movement. Their name comes from the high-visibility yellow vests that drivers are required to keep in their vehicles for safety reasons.Interior Minister Christophe Castaner vowed Friday to deploy all the means available to ensure the latest "yellow vest" protests are not hijacked by what he said were "10,000" people, "a small minority" of the movement who have been "radicalized and fallen into violence and hate.""We have to guarantee the safety of protesters and the right of citizens to move around freely," Castaner told a news conference.Nationwide, some 630 people were arrested and more than 260 were injured, including 81 police officers, during last weekend's protests, the third consecutive week of such demonstrations.There have also been four accidental deaths, according to officials. Three of them resulted from traffic accidents related to the blockades and the fourth was an 80-year-old woman who died in Marseille after being hit by a tear gas canister that came through her window.The demonstrations began as a form of grassroots opposition to rising gas prices and planned increases in taxes on polluting forms of transport, but they have since evolved into broader demonstrations against the government of President Emmanuel Macron.Macron appeared to back down Wednesday, announcing that the fuel tax planned for January -- as part of measures to combat climate change -- would not be introduced in 2019. But the movement now appears to be about more than just taxes; it's exposed the growing divide between Paris' metropolitan elite and the country's rural poor.Maxime Nicolle, a member of the gilets jaunes from rural Brittany, told CNN: "I'm definitely not backing down now. The moratorium is useless. The people want a referendum, a referendum on Macron, the senate and the national assembly."Street furniture, such as railings around trees and benches, will be removed from parts of Paris ahead of the expected protests.Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said municipal services were "mobilized and determined to ensure everyone's protection." In particular, she said, about 2,000 items of street furniture, including 58 public bike stations, are being removed so "troublemakers" cannot use the objects as weapons. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The U.S. set another daily record in new cases of the coronavirus Thursday, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins.The U.S. as a whole reported about 52,300 new cases of the virus on Thursday. Of those cases, about 25,000 were reported in four states: Arizona, California, Florida and Texas.According to Johns Hopkins, the U.S. has set a daily record in new COVID-19 cases in five of the last nine days.All but 10 U.S. states are showing an increase of confirmed cases over the last 14 days, according to data compiled by the COVID Tracking Project. Nebraska and South Dakota were the only states outside the Northeast with a decrease in cases, but those states are also recording higher positive test rates. 748

For two minutes, people and traffic in Israel today paused to remember the estimated 6 million lives lost during the Holocaust.The Times of Israel reports that at 10 a.m. local time, nationwide sirens blared as a day of remembrance began. It also shared this video to Facebook: The Holocaust was a genocide during World War II in which millions of European Jews were killed by Nazi Germany led by Adolf Hitler, between 1941 and 1945.Beginning in the early 1930s, the German government passed laws to exclude Jews from civil society. Many were moved to concentration camps, ghettos and detention sites.A new survey found that Americans are beginning to lack basic knowledge about the Holocaust.The survey found that nearly half of all Americans — 41 percent — couldn't identify Auschwitz, a concentration camp where an estimated 1.1 million Jews and minorities were killed at the hands of Nazis during World War II. Among millennials, that number rose to 66 percent.The survey also found that a significant portion of Americans don't understand the scale of the Holocaust. Frankie Kipp started the Blackfeet Nation Boxing Club in 2003 for a simple reason. He wanted to teach vulnerable people on the reservation, especially women and young girls, to defend themselves.After years of working as a probation officer, he was tired of bearing witness to tragedy after tragedy. Kipp was a successful amateur boxer in his youth and connected the two sides of his life with the club. Next week, Kipp’s life work and his pupils will be recognized on the big screen. The club will be featured in a documentary called “Blackfeet Boxing: Not Invisible”, set to air Tuesday, June 30 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.“I started seeing girls getting bullied,” Kipp said from his home in Browning, Montana. “And several in their 20s wanted to learn how to take up for themselves because they were getting abused. We start hearing about young ladies getting taken from Indian country. And so I started training my daughter and I told her if something happens, at least you're going to know how to fight for your life.”Over the past 20 years, Kipp has trained more than 500 boxers on the reservation, and he’s seen positive effects in his charges and in the community.“Some of the girls that come into the boxing club have really low self-esteem. And the confidence they get from boxing is just phenomenal,” Kipp said. “But I don’t train bullies. I tell all the boxers to go to authority figures first if someone is threatening them. But let them know that you box for Blackfeet Nation and that you won’t let anyone hit you. You will fight back.”“It was emotional a sense that, I was a probation officer prior and I put a lot of things upstairs in my head, unpleasant things,” Kipp said. “I had to talk several people out of suicide, kids as young as 8 years old wanted to kill themselves. The documentary had brought a lot of memories back up. There were a few that were real unpleasant that made me break down during the interview.”‘Blackfeet Boxing: Not Invisible’, directed by Kristen Lappas and Tom Rinaldi, is a film about fighting — for respect, identity and acknowledgment.The documentary, which has already screened at several film festivals, paints the gym against the backdrop of stories like that of Ashley Loring-Heavyrunner and several other Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. Kipp hopes the large audience will help spread awareness to the silent epidemic.“I think it would raise awareness, not just on our reservation but most of the Indian nations. This is what's happening, people are coming up missing,” Kipp said. “We have unsolved murders. It’s crazy some of the things that we see. I do think that it's going to bring up some awareness with that.”There are no scorecards or knockouts for many of the boxers on the Blackfeet Reservation.
