SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three of the four American tourists killed in a helicopter crash in Kenya on Sunday night were from San Diego.Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey told 10News David Baker, a Coronado resident, was killed in the crash. The US Embassy identified Brandon Stapper and Asher Burke, who also lived in San Diego, as victims earlier in the day Monday. He had a spark like no one I'd ever seen in my life," said Blum.Stapper had traveled to Kenya to support Burke, who had recently purchased a lodge that he hoped to market as a retreat for business owners."Asher's vision was for entrepreneurs to come out and experience Kenya in an amazing way without rules," said Brett Stapper, Brandon's brother who had also been out to Kenya recently.David Baker, who worked in commercial real estate and owned several businesses was also on board."He was so excited about this trip," remembered Richard Bailey, the mayor of Coronado who was also good friends with Baker."Dave was an adventurer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council on Tuesday unanimously voted in favor of a proposal to purchase two city hotels and used them to help hundreds of homeless San Diegans.City leaders want to turn the Residence Inn hotels in Kearny Mesa and Mission Valley to be turned into permanent housing. The proposal was approved in a 9-0 vote.The hotels are price tagged at a combined 6.5 million. The hotels can house 400 people experiencing homelessness; residences of the properties would include people staying at the Convention Center as part of the Operation Shelter to Home, which started in April due to the coronavirus pandemic.Father Joe’s Villages will be providing services for the Kearny Mesa location, while People Assisting the Homeless (PATH) will provide services at the Mission Valley location. The services provided will include mental and behavioral health services, healthcare services, substance use services, and employment assistance.City leaders hope to get people moved in and the services running by the end of the year. 1058

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The upcoming San Diego Blood Bank's blood drive brings those impacted by the donations of others into focus.One of those people brought into focus is Bryan Caraveo. Bryan was hit by a dump truck while riding his bike to work on National Bike to Work Day.Due to the accident, Bryan suffered a traumatic brain injury, collapsed lung, several broken ribs and a broken nose, clavicle and vertebrae.Bryan underwent two surgeries that required several blood transfusions, according to the blood bank.RELATED: San Diego Blood Bank partners with Westfield, ABC10 to host 'The Gift of Health'In describing the first moments he woke up in the hospital and realized what had happened Bryan said, “It was a matter of realizing that I was awake somewhere I didn’t know where I was or how I got there.”Bryan’s life was in part saved thanks to people who donated blood to the San Diego Blood Bank.“It makes me feel great because I know that at some point there were people who donated that helped me,” said Bryan.Bryan now frequents the blood bank to give back to those who gave him back his life.He also shared some advice for those on the fence about making a blood donation. “Take a look at your family and friends that are around you and imagine that in an hour they need blood. Are you willing to give a pint of blood to save their life? If you’re willing to give, you know, your family and friends a pint of blood, what about somebody else?” 1470

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council voted in favor Tuesday of an affordable housing plan which critics say could raise rents and home prices across San Diego.The vote, which came after hours of public comment, was five to four in support of the proposal.Council President Georgette Gomez moved to require developers to reserve 10 to 15 percent of new housing units in complexes for low to moderate income households. The plan includes other options, but if all else fails the proposal would raise the affordable housing in-lieu fee developers pay by 72 percent. For a typical 1,800 square foot unit, that would be an additional ,000 in construction costs that could be passed on to tenants. “We’re in a royal housing mess, and I almost would like to say, today, believe it or not, are the good old days for housing, because we’re staring straight into a bigger problem,” said Borre Winckel, who heads the San Diego Building Industry Association. But supporters of the proposal say the city needs the housing. Many workers are now being forced to commute from far away because there is no housing available. A report last year found the region still needed more than 140,000. "We’re certainly not trying to drive the cost of housing. Our number one goal here is to try to incentivize and regulate in a more fair manner the building of affordable housing,” said Keith Maddox, of the San Diego Imperial Counties Labor Council. Councilman Scott Sherman, who opposes the proposal, said the larger fee would add to a market rate rental and ,000 to the price of a home.
