In a sea of graduation caps, how do you stand out? Increasingly, students are decorating their caps to showcase some part of their life.UNLV professor and folklorist Sheila Bock began studying trends behind graduation caps after she first arrived in Las Vegas in 2011. She began formally researching in 2015, taking photos from around the country and interviewing students on their graduation cap design choices."So one category is one of celebration and optimism and looking into the future, 'I did this', 'the best is yet to come', which isn't that surprising because that's kinda the whole point of the graduation ceremony," Bock said.Some examples include "Today is a perfect day to start living your dreams" or "Adventure is out there." While Bock said many celebrate "education as this stepping stone towards people's own individualized version of pursuing the American Dream," she also found a lot of examples of people pushing back against that story, rather by "Game of Loans" referencing college loan debt or highlighting the less positive aspects of their college experience. "Family relationships, whether they have kids, whether they have been dealing with a brain tumor, this is a space where students or graduates are really trying to highlight 'I did this' and here are the struggles I had to go through in order to get to this moment," Bock said, also noting that some students use the caps as a memorial to family and friends they've lost. But one thing she has noticed in the past few years is the caps have started to take more of a lean toward the political. Bock noted that there has been a long tradition of political themes, dating back to the 1960s and caps decorated with peace signs in reference to the Vietnam War. "It's not to say people weren't doing it before but I'm seeing it happen as a more widespread practice. People are asserting overtly political messages, like Black Lives Matter," she said. "Or making references to language from the political landscape, 'nevertheless she persisted.' Or calling attention to specific identities that have recently become very politicized, immigrant identities."Hashtags on social media, such as #Immigrad and #Latinxgrad, also inspire others of similar identities to create their own caps, Bock said."They want to use this space of the graduation ceremony, this space of celebration, this space to recognize accomplishment, to make themselves visible," she said. "To make these marginalized identities visible and say I'm in this space, I belong in this space and I want to make myself known."But what about students who decide not to decorate their caps? "The main reason is that people feel this sense of formality to the ceremony that they would like to keep intact," Bock said. "Oftentimes, it's not necessarily that they see other people decorating their cap that they're doing something wrong. They're saying I don't have something to say badly enough to put it on a cap and kind of disrupt the formality of the occasion."The majority of the caps Bock and her student assistants have documented so far are from UNLV, along with some from Ohio State University, where Bock received her graduate degrees. IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif., (KGTV) — One week after San Diego County lifted the beach closure at the Imperial Beach Pier, many people are enjoying the waves. But parts of the coastline remain closed due to the Tijuana River runoff contamination. Nicolas Pasculli of Hillcrest, drove down specifically to Imperial Beach to avoid the weekend crowds.“We’ve had rain for such a long time. It’s nice to enjoy the sunshine and the fresh air," Pasculli said. We met him sunbathing on the sand, just south of Seacoast Drive. Compared to some of the other areas in the county, this beach was empty.“Maybe because the sign is up and it says to be careful, the water might be contaminated,” Pasculli said. Bright yellow signs are clearly posted at the entrance of the beach. Last week, San Diego County Environmental Health gave the green light for people to enjoy beaches north of the last house on Southeast Drive in Imperial Beach. But Pasculli was right in the middle of the 'Red zone,' where the county deemed unsafe due to Tijuana sewage contamination since last November. That did not seem to bother him. “The way I look at it, we’re pretty close to that last house, so I think we’re in a gray zone, so I’m not worried about it,” Pasculli said. Surfer Dane Crosby was not phased by the warnings either.“It’s a north swell today, so I know that the water is moving south," he said.The Imperial Beach resident already surfed the waters in the morning. He was at the beach again, walking his dog Dixie.“When it is dirty, you’ll get an essence of detergent, kind of like a peppery detergent smell,” Crosby said. But today, he did not smell anything. Neither did Pasculli. They are both confident that the winds and waves will filter away the contaminants.“I think sometimes people get over anxious about things because we’ve become such a germaphobe society,” Pasculli said. “The ocean is pretty active today, so I think it's going to clean itself out.” 1950

(KGTV) — Wednesday, Imperial Beach city leaders unanimously approved a one-cent sale tax measure for the November ballot.The city says, if enacted, the measure would, "enable the City to prepare for medical or catastrophic emergencies including preparing local first responder services, updating emergency communication systems and maintaining rapid 911 emergency response capacity."The potential one-cent sales tax increase would also support restoring the city's long-term emergency funding that is being used to address the coronavirus pandemic."Even through these challenging times, the City must continue to address challenges with clean, safe neighborhoods and addressing homelessness to maintain Imperial Beach as a quality community to live, work and raise a family for all residents," said Assistant City Manager, Erika Cortez-Martinez.The measure includes accountability and transparency requirements, including public disclosure of spending and independent audits, the city says.If approved it would go into effect in the spring of 2021. 1079
