This will be achieved through expanding domestic demand especially consumption demand, restructuring the economy and transforming the growth pattern, he said.     All will ultimately target maximally satisfying people's increasing material and cultural needs, he added.     In 2009, China will enhance and improve macroeconomic control efforts and carry out an active fiscal policy, as well as a moderately easy monetary policy, he said.     "We have the confidence and the ability to overcome various difficulties and achieve further development," he added.     The government will pool strength of the nation to do some practical things for the people, including expanding employment, improving the social security system, promoting medicare system reform, enhancing development of the cultural industry, and ensuring smooth rebuilding in disaster-hit areas, he said.     The government will also strive to solve people's housing difficulties and to provide satisfactory education that ensures no child drops out of school because of financial difficulties, he said.     Other leaders, including Wu Bangguo, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang, also attended the gathering.     Spring Festival, or the Chinese Lunar New Year, is the most important traditional Chinese festival of family reunion. It falls on Jan. 26 this year.

BEIJING, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Leaders from the Communist Party of China(CPC) and the Prosperous Armenia of Armenia pledged to promote contacts based on principles of independence, equality and non-interference in each other's internal affairs on Monday.     Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, and Gagik Tsarukyan, president of the Prosperous Armenia agreed to learn from each other to cement the relations between the two countries during a meeting at the Great Hall of the People.     Li said Sino-Armenia relations had developed smoothly and cooperation in the fields of trade, education, science and agriculture had been fruitful since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1992.     He expressed appreciation of Armenia's adherence to the one-China policy, saying China valued ties with Armenia and would upgrade the bilateral ties to benefit the two peoples.     Tsarukyan echoed that his party would strengthen cooperation with the CPC to further relations between Armenia and China.     Prosperous Armenia of Armenia was founded by Tsarukyan in late 2005, and now is the second largest political party in parliament.     Tsarukyan and his party are visiting China at the invitation of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee.

BEIJING, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has urged the country's political advisors to make more practical proposals to the government to resolve environmental pollution and other social problems.     Jia Qinglin, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultation Conference (CPPCC), made the remark in a letter to the CPPCC's first seminar on China's population, resources and environment development concluded in Beijing on Tuesday.     China would have many challenges in achieving steady economic growth and social development next year, which included environmental protection, employment and resources issues, Jia said in the letter.     Political advisors should work together and make proposals and suggestions that could serve the people and country effectively, he said.     The seminar was attended by members of the CPPCC, China's top political advisory body, and experts from companies and research institutes.

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, or Cabinet, appointed Friday nine new counselors and six new members of the Central Research Institute of Culture and History.     Premier Wen Jiabao conferred the appointments, saying this year was the 60th founding anniversary of the counselors' department and the 58th for the institute, both founded on proposals by then leaders Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai.     The two institutions were a major part of the Communist Party of China's United Front work, established to unite all forces in the development the nation, as well as a component of the government work.     Wen asked the counselors and researchers to advise the government by collecting public opinions and grassroots information, play a supervisory role, and helping boost the country's cultural sector.     The global financial crisis had brought a new opportunity for cultural development as the confidence for dealing with the crisis relied on cultural heritage and scientific spirits, he said.
