At the press conference, representatives from the Gulls and the Seals spoke, saying they're excited for their teams to play in the new space. "Though the news from the city today felt like a punch in the gut, years being married to the sport of soccer has taught me that sometimes you can win on the field and not get the result that matters. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a typical year, California teachers spend an average of 4 of their own money on classroom supplies, but with districts preparing for distance learning this fall, educators are facing a different set of expenses.In the Vista Unified School District, 5th-grade teacher Keri Avila said she had to create a home office, starting with upgrading her internet.“I think in the beginning it was an oversight. The schools did a really good job making sure students had connectivity and I think you expect teachers would have the connectivity they need. But a lot of us didn’t,” said Avila, who is also the vice president of the Vista Teachers Association.Many teachers in the South Bay Union School District had to upgrade their internet bandwidth, especially with other family members working from home simultaneously, said Vanessa Barrera, a 3rd-grade teacher, and president of the Southwest Teachers Association.In a survey at the beginning of the pandemic, 1% of the teachers in her district said they had no internet at all. Twenty-five percent said they lacked a home office workspace, she said.Although districts provided laptops for educators, some teachers purchased office furniture, web cameras, specialty applications, and other equipment to facilitate lessons.“In our district, we were just provided with our laptop," Barrera said. "We were not allowed to bring home the printers, document cameras, Elmos.”An Elmo is similar to an overhead transparency projector that connects to a computer. Barrera said some teachers in her district had to rig together solutions of their own, using cell phones and flexible stands purchased online.Districts have pledged to roll out mobile hotspots to teachers with connectivity issues, but the cost of upgraded home internet continues to be the subject of negotiations between districts and unions, Avila and Barrera said.Classroom costs could rise once students return to campuses because of CDC guidance that kids should not share supplies.“Previously you might have bought a pencil box for a table to share, well that’s not going to be acceptable now,” said Barrera. “Whatever the cost will be for the coming year will depend on what this school year will look like, but as teachers we just forfeit the money to make sure students have what they need.” 2328

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — If you’re thinking about trading in your used car, now might be the time.Used car prices are beginning to cool off but remain near the historic highs caused by the pandemic, according to data from Edmunds.After a peak in September, dealers paid 3.3% less on average for trade-ins in October. The average used vehicle transaction price, however, remained flat at a record-high ,418 in October because of an influx of relatively new off-lease vehicles."If your household has a second vehicle that you are thinking about selling because it's going unused during the pandemic, there's no point in holding onto it in the hopes of its value increasing again,” said Ivan Drury, Edmunds' senior manager of insights. “You won't get a dramatically higher value for your trade-in than you would have just last month, but you should still get a bit more money than usual since values are still inflated."Used vehicles are worth 16.9% than they did last year, according to the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index.What caused the historic spikeIn some ways, the pandemic was a time machine for used car prices, reversing depreciation and making pre-owned vehicles worth more than they did a year ago.“That’s kind of crazy to see appreciation on a used vehicle,” Drury said.Drury said he sold a car after owning it for a year for the same price. “That’s unheard of.”Industry experts say it’s a matter of supply and demand. During the pandemic, the supply of used cars dropped, while the demand soared. Both caused prices to spike to record levels.On the supply side, the shutdown of new car manufacturing had a cascading effect on the used car market.“We weren’t churning out new cars, which meant there wasn’t much for shoppers to buy. Therefore people weren’t trading in their used cars,” said Michelle Krebs, Autotrader’s executive analyst. “Everything just kind of stopped.”On top of fewer trade-ins, the pandemic brought the car rental industry to a standstill. Normally, companies like Hertz and Enterprise refresh their fleets, selling off about two million used cars a year. Car rental companies kept their fleets parked during the early months of the pandemic.The third reason supply plummeted: a lot of people decided to put off car buying and extended their leases, so those vehicles weren’t available for sale, although that is now beginning to change.At the same time the supply of used cars dropped, demand for used vehicles surged.“The factories were shut down. They weren’t producing. A lot of consumers, even if they wanted to buy new, they suddenly had to look at used,” Drury said. “That jacked up demand. We had consumers fighting for the same units of inventory.”Demand also rose because people in metro areas that typically relied on public transportation decided to get cars for the first time. And in an environment with a lot of financial uncertainty, used cars were a more affordable option, Krebs said.Low interest rates and stimulus checks also fueled demand by giving consumers more buying power, according to Krebs and Drury.With car rental businesses picking back up and lease extensions beginning to end, the supply of used cars has begun to stabilize. That means now may be the time to sell your used car, particularly before the calendar flips to 2021 and vehicles get one model year older, Drury said.You’ll get more for your used car if you trade it in now, but there’s a trade-off: “You’re also going to pay more for a new car,” Krebs said. 3489

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local health officials said Thursday a new case of vaping-related lung injury has been reported, as county leaders prepare to consider new vaping regulations.So far in San Diego, there have been 43 confirmed cases of vaping-associated lung injury with three cases under investigation. There haven't been any local deaths, but all patients have had to be hospitalized. Those affected range in age from 17 to 70 years old, according to the county.The CDC has said that vitamin E acetate and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are closely linked with e-cigarette, or vaping, associated lung injury. CDC recommends people avoid using THC-containing e-cigarettes or vaping products.RELATED: San Diego woman hospitalized with vaping illness warns others“Vaping-related lung injuries continue to be reported in the region and that’s concerning,” said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer.As of Jan. 7, the CDC has reported 2,602 hospitalizations or deaths from sudden and severe lung injuries associated with vaping.The San Diego County Board of Supervisors is set to discuss several potential local actions on regulating e-cigarette devices during a Jan. 14 meeting. Those ordinances include a ban on flavored tobacco sale and distribution, device moratorium, and restricting e-cigarette smoking to outdoor areas at restaurant. The ordinances would apply to unincorporated parts of the county.“As stewards of public health; we have a responsibility to raise awareness and act in the best interest of the public to protect them,” said Supervisor Fletcher. “Right now we simply do not know enough about the chemicals being consumed and their impacts. We are acting in a similar fashion to other jurisdictions in California, we are acting with an abundance of caution.” A second meeting on the ordinances will be held on Jan. 28. If the ordinances pass, they will go into effect July 1. 1902
