COLUMBUS, Ohio — After a Franklin County court judge denied Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine's late request to move the state's primary election scheduled for Tuesday to June 2, DeWine said his public health director will order sites closed, defying the judge's order. DeWine announced earlier on Monday that he filed a lawsuit to move Ohio's primary election day to ensure the safety of Ohio voters in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic."During this time when we face an unprecedented public health crisis, to conduct an election tomorrow would force poll workers and voters to place themselves at an unacceptable health risk of contracting coronavirus," DeWine tweeted after the judge's ruling. "As such, Dr. Amy Acton will order the polls closed as a health emergency. While the polls will be closed tomorrow, Secretary of State Frank LaRose will seek a remedy through the courts to extend voting options so that every voter who wants to vote will be granted that opportunity."DeWine said that he does not want Ohio voters who are at-risk for COVID-19 to have to make the choice between their constitutional right and their health."It is therefore my recommendation, after talking with the secretary of state, talking with the attorney general, talking with the lieutenant governor, that voting be extended to June 2," DeWine said. "That no in-person voting occur today, that in-person voting happen on June 2." He also recommended extending absentee voting by mail until June 2."It is, I believe, the right thing to do," DeWine said. However, DeWine said earlier on Tuesday he does not have the authority to delay the election - the state constitution provides for moving election day in the event of an invasion.LaRose said that he has advised the state's Attorney General, Dave Yost, to accept the governor's recommendation and allow the election day delay. He said the lawsuit would be submitted for consideration Monday afternoon."When we look back at this we're going to be glad we did this," DeWine said.In addition, people aged 65 and older, pregnant and those with compromised immune systems are being asked by DeWine not to leave their homes.DeWine issued several new orders Monday in an attempt to slow the spread of coronavirus. His order will close fitness centers, gyms, bowling alleys, recreation centers, movie theaters, indoor water parks, and indoor trampoline parks. This order will take effect at close of business Monday. In addition, in order to conform the CDC guidelines, DeWine adjusted Ohio's mass gathering ban from 100 people at a gathering to 50.DeWine's decision comes days after the state, along with Arizona, Florida and Illinois, said in a 2678

DENVER, Colo. -- A man quit his job after he says he was told he couldn't work from home amid the coronavirus outbreak. Now, the company is making changes. On Thursday, Charter Communications made changes to its policies to help employees during crisis. The company says it will now let employees they believe "can remain productive outside the office without endangering our obligation to provide critical services" work remotely. Charter says employees will receive an additional three weeks of paid time off to be used for "any COVID-19-related personal need."The company also said in a statement, it is working on "increased social distancing" plans in its call centers and operations facilities.Last week, Denver-based systems engineer Nick Wheeler resigned from Charter over the company not letting him work remotely. "The science of social distancing is real. We have the complete ability to our jobs from home,” he wrote in an email to hundreds of people at Charter. Wheeler says Charter wouldn't let employees work from home. He says much of his work was done on a laptop.“What I do is literally interfaced with systems that are in data centers in other states,” Wheeler said. Wheeler says he and co-workers recently raised concerns as the outbreak grew. Then, he sent the email last week. It went to 460 people at Charter, including his senior vice president. "Coming into the office now is pointlessly reckless it’s also socially irresponsible. Charter, like the rest of us, should do what’s necessary to stop the spread of coronavirus,” Wheeler wrote. “I included everybody because everybody was involved. It’s a pretty serious crisis,” he said. Wheeler says not long after that email, he was called to his boss' office. He was given the option of using his vacation time. "I could take my personal leave time and go home and stay home as long as I have leave time, if I was worried about my health,” Wheeler said. “I took my badge off and I offered it to my vice-president because I didn’t feel that was an appropriate response.”Charter agreed he’d resign. When asked about Wheeler's situation, Charter said it would not discuss internal police or specific employee situations. The company did provide this statement on Wednesday: 2254

Every year the, FBI releases data detailing "uniform crime reporting" in America. The data compiles reports from thousands of agencies, and indicates trends in criminal activity, and numbers of crimes committed nationwide. While the data indicates the number of criminal reports taken by law enforcement agencies, the FBI said that the data could have pitfalls and give an incomplete picture of crime in America. The FBI said due to a number of factors, comparing jurisdictions is discouraged. Here are some of the factors the FBI lists:Population density and degree of urbanization.Variations in composition of the population, particularly youth concentration.Stability of the population with respect to residents; mobility, commuting patterns, and transient factors.Economic conditions, including median income, poverty level, and job availability.Modes of transportation and highway systems.Cultural factors and educational, recreational, and religious characteristics.Family conditions with respect to divorce and family cohesiveness.Effective strength of law enforcement agencies.Administrative and investigative emphases on law enforcement.Policies of other components of the criminal justice system (i.e., prosecutorial, judicial, correctional, and probational).Citizens’ attitudes toward crime.Crime reporting practices of the citizenry."When providing/using agency-oriented statistics, the FBI cautions and, in fact, strongly discourages, data users against using rankings to evaluate locales or the effectiveness of their law enforcement agencies," the FBI said in a statement. While the FBI discourages comparing crime rates between cities, the FBI said its data can be useful in other ways. "UCR crime statistics are used in many ways and serve many purposes," the FBI said. "They provide law enforcement with data for use in budget formulation, planning, resource allocation, assessment of police operations, etc., to help address the crime problem at various levels."Chambers of commerce and tourism agencies examine these data to see how they impact the particular geographic jurisdictions they represent. Criminal justice researchers study the nature, cause, and movement of crime over time. Legislators draft anti-crime measures using the research findings and recommendations of law enforcement administrators, planners, as well as public and private entities concerned with crime problems. The news media use the crime statistics provided by the UCR Program to inform the public about the state of crime as it compares to the national level."If you would like to see crime data from 2018 for your area, click 2640

Dozens of organizations lined up outside the Toys for Tots warehouse in Aurora on Monday morning to pick up their orders of toys for the holiday season. Many of them had planned to give out gifts in the coming days but were told when they arrived that there were not enough toys to fill everyone's order. Standing in line since 8 a.m., Jody Nickerson, who went in to get her order, said the warehouse looks completely empty inside. "Many of us were saying in line, 'We’ll even take half of what we requested,' at least to give some of them some gifts and then work from there," Nickerson said. Volunteer coordinator with Toys for Tots, Tasha Gallegos, said the reason for there not being enough toys is because of the higher demand and less donations this year. "Today what we have going on is we have many agencies here picking up toys, scheduled to pick up toys, and we can’t accommodate them because the warehouse is very low on toys. We didn’t reach our goal." Toys for Tots will stay open and will be accepting donations through Thursday. If you are interested in donating toys at their location, the address is listed below:This article was written by Ivan Rodriguez for 1190
