Chuck Yeager, the famed World War II fighter pilot who was the first pilot to break the speed of sound, died on Monday at the age of 97, Yeager's wife Victoria Yeager said on his Twitter account.According to family, Yeager died shortly before 9 p.m. ET on Monday."An incredible life well lived, America’s greatest Pilot, & a legacy of strength, adventure, & patriotism will be remembered forever," Victoria Yeager tweeted.Yeager earned a number of awards for his service to America, including the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Air Force Distinguished Service Medal and Legion of Merit, among others. (KGTV) - An afternoon drive on the I-805 was interrupted by an explosion of glass, and a very close call.Just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jennifer Opdahl was northbound in the slow lane, and traffic was flowing. As she drove under the East Palomar Street overpass, she heard a close 'boom.' She didn't see anything flying at her, but she felt something."Kind of an explosion. Just heard glass splintering. It clearly came from my above my head. I think I ducked and screamed, but I was still driving," said Opdahl.When she later got out, she could barely believe what she was seeing: the sunroof on her Volkswagen Golf was shattered. Under the glass is a panel which slides back and forth. Whatever struck likely bounced off. Opdahl is thankful the sunroof wasn't open. The roof is inches from where her head was. "I dodged a bullet. I very easily could be dead right now," said Opdahl.Ophdal believes that bullet was a something heavy tossed from the overpass. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a deadly crash in the South Bay early Sunday morning. According to police, the single-car crash happened on the 100 block of Telegraph Canyon Road just after 3:45 a.m. Chula Vista Police say a man was driving along the road when he veered to the left and struck two trees in the center median, causing major damage to the vehicle. RELATED: Fire breaks out inside San Diego shopping centerWhen officers arrived on scene, the vehicle was reportedly on fire with the man trapped inside. The driver was taken to the hospital with major injuries where he later died. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A woman accused of stealing a car containing two young children from outside a Lincoln Park cell phone store and driving to the U.S.-Mexico border, pleaded not guilty today to kidnapping and child abduction charges.RELATED: Police: Woman arrested after stealing car with kids inside, trying to cross border into Mexico?Leslie Esparanza Saenz, 26, was ordered held without bail pending a review hearing next Wednesday.  The father of the 8-year-old girl and 3-year-old boy parked his gold Hyundai Excel outside the Cricket Wireless shop in the 200 block of Euclid Avenue about 12:15 p.m. Monday and went into the business by himself, leaving the vehicle unlocked and its engine running, according to San Diego police.   Moments later, a woman who appeared to be in her late teens got into the car and drove off to the east on Imperial Avenue with the children still inside, Officer Luis Roman said.Police searched for the stolen car and missing children until shortly before 2 p.m., when the Hyundai arrived at the San Ysidro Port of Entry at the southern terminus of Interstate 5.There, federal agents who had gotten a be-on-the-lookout bulletin regarding the auto theft and kidnapping took the driver  - who was later identified as Saenz -- into custody without incident.   Authorities then reunited the children, who had suffered no injuries during the ordeal, with their father and returned his car to him, Roman said.Police have not established a motive for the alleged kidnapping. 1553
