(AP) — Officials say a pregnant woman jumped into the water to save her 30-year-old husband when a shark latched onto his shoulder as he was snorkeling in the Florida Keys.The attack happened Sunday morning along Sombrero Reef, off Marathon. Andrew Eddy had just gotten into the water when the shark bit into him.Deputies say the Atlanta man's wife, Margot Dukes-Eddy, dove into the water without hesitation and pulled him to safety.Medics waiting on the beach flew Eddy to Miami for treatment. His condition wasn't available, but deputies described the injury to his shoulder as severe.No one else was injured by the shark.The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says the shark was described by witnesses as being 8 to 10 feet long.“This was a very rare medical crisis for the Florida Keys, but everyone came together — including those witnesses on the boat to 911 Communicators to all our emergency responders — in order to ensure this victim received life-saving care,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay in a press release. 1035

Mary Kay Letourneau, a former teacher who was sentenced for an illicit relationship with a then sixth-grade student, has died at the age of 58, her attorney told NBC News.Her lawyer David Gehrke told news outlets Letourneau died Tuesday of cancer.Letourneau was charged with rape of a child after Letourneau became pregnant following a sexual relationship with student Vili Fualaau. The relationship began in 1996 when Letourneau was 34 and Fualaau was 12 or 13.When Fualaau was 18, he petitioned the court to lift a no-contact order between Letourneau and Fualaau. Maybe music artist Moby was right, and “we are all made of stars.” New research suggests the calcium in our teeth and bones came from star explosions.Researchers from Northwestern University looked at a calcium-rich supernova with x-ray imaging, which provided a glimpse into the last month of the star’s life and ultimate explosion.The findings, published in The Astrophysical Journal, suggest a calcium-rich supernova is a compact star that gives off an outer layer of gas as it’s dying. When it explodes, the star’s matter collides with material, emitting bright x-rays.The explosion is so intensely hot and high pressure, it allows nuclear fusion to produce a massive amount of calcium in mere seconds. Typically, a star creates a small amount of calcium slowly by burning helium.Half the calcium in the universe likely came from calcium-rich supernovae.“These events are so few in number that we have never known what produced calcium-rich supernova,” said Wynn Jacobson-Galan, a first-year Northwestern graduate student who led the study. “By observing what this star did in its final month before it reached its critical, tumultuous end, we peered into a place previously unexplored, opening new avenues of study within transient science.”The observed explosion was named SN 2019ehk in the Messier 100 galaxy. If that sounds a little too fantasy, just know it was 55 million light years from earth.“Without this explosion, you wouldn’t know that anything was ever there,” Margutti added. “Not even Hubble could see it.”The team was able to look at images from the Hubble Telescope of the area of SN 2019ehk before the explosion to compare before and after.The researchers are working on a follow-up study that includes how the supernova is evolving after the explosion, according to statements made to CNN. 1821

A little bit of comfort because I know she’s not hurting," said Marulli. "Somebody loves her. To leave her on the side of the road like she’s an old pet, it's cruel." Loved ones held on to positive memories today while raising money for her funeral. "She was amazing," said Marulli. LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Five-year-old NeeCee, a female snow leopard at the Louisville Zoo, has tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans, the zoo announced in a release issued Friday. The Louisville Zoo is awaiting confirmatory results of the other two male snow leopards – Kimti and Meru. All three cats are doing well with very mild symptoms. The zoo said it continues to monitor their health closely and expects all three cats to recover. No other animals are showing symptoms at this time. The three snow leopards began exhibiting minor respiratory symptoms, including an occasional dry cough or wheeze, within the last two weeks. It is suspected that NeeCee acquired the infection from an asymptomatic staff member, despite precautions by the Zoo.“Fortunately, based on clinical cases in large cats at other zoos in the country to this point, SARS-CoV-2 infection does not appear to be life-threatening,” said Dr. Zoli Gyimesi, the zoo's senior staff veterinarian. “We will be closely monitoring the snow leopards for ongoing symptoms and resampling them to identify when they have cleared the infection.”In April 2020, four tigers and three lions were confirmed positive at the Bronx Zoo in New York. An additional three tigers at an AZA zoo in Tennessee were confirmed to be infected this fall. Just last week, the Barcelona Zoo announced four lions tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.
