He co-designed the GE-225 mainframe computer while working for General Electric in the 1950s. The machine allowed researchers at Dartmouth College to come up with the coding language BASIC, which made personal computers possible. A man was stranded in the Los Angeles River at Atwater Village as a storm moved through, creating rapids in the normally driver riverbed. The firefighter who first made it to the man in a boat had to turn back due to the difficult position. A rescue swimmer joined the boat pilot and saved the man. The man was evaluated by paramedics.
