EL CAJON (CNS) - A man suspected of killing his husband at their Mount Helix home pleaded not guilty Friday to a murder charge.Daniel Scott Jordan, 45, is accused in the slaying of 38-year-old Kevin Powell, a Chula Vista city employee whose body was found in the couple's Carmen Drive residence on Aug. 11.Chula Vista police found Powell's body while conducting a welfare check, sheriff's Lt. Thomas Seiver said. Early Friday morning, the Senate passed a .3 trillion spending package that will increase funding for the military and domestic spending and will keep the government funded through the end of September, sending the legislation to the President for his signature house ahead of a midnight deadline.The Senate passed the bill after a whirlwind day where at least two Republican senators held up the legislative process and made it appear unclear whether the bill could pass ahead of the deadline. EL CAJON (KGTV) -- Multiple people were injured Thursday night when a car crashed into a Mexican food restaurant in El Cajon. The crash happened at 7:37 p.m. at the Sombrero Mexican Food restaurant located at 1501 E. Washington Avenue.Four employees were inside the restaurant at the time, according to El Cajon Police. All of them received minor injuries, and one of them was taken to the hospital.El Cajon officers tried to stop the driver of the car earlier in the evening but stopped the pursuit because it was unsafe. A short while later, the driver plowed into the restaurant. It's not clear why the officers were attempting to stop him.The driver tried to run from the scene following the crash, but officers were able to arrest him. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.Police say they are investigating the incident as a hit-and-run and don't believe drugs and alcohol played a part. 912

Don't blame Amazon for the death of Toys "R" Us.It's true, online shopping didn't help matters, but the struggles of Toys "R" Us predate the boom in online shopping. Many of its wounds were self-inflicted.The company's biggest problem: It was saddled with billions of dollars in debt. That debt stopped it from making the necessary investment in stores. And that meant an unpleasant shopping experience that doomed the chain. The company told employees Wednesday that it would close or sell its US stores after 70 years in business."If you're going to have that breadth of inventory, you need someone in the store to help you find it, help you experience it," said Greg Portell, lead partner at retail consultant A.T. Kearney. "It's hard to sell toys in a cold, warehouse environment."Even Toys "R" Us CEO David Brandon conceded in an SEC filing last fall that the company had fallen behind competitors "on various fronts, including with regard to general upkeep and the condition of our stores."Toys "R" Us' debt problems date back to well before Amazon was a major threat. Its debt was downgraded to junk bond status in January of 2005, at a time when Amazon's sales were just 4% of their current level.A year later the company was taken private by KKR, Bain Capital and real estate firm Vornado. DOWNTOWN (CNS) - Authorities shut down lanes of Interstate 5 in Downtown San Diego as firefighters battled a small fire that broke out in palm trees near San Diego City College's campus, just west of the freeway Saturday afternoon.The fire was first reported at 3:44 p.m., according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.The CHP closed the right two lanes of southbound I-5, leaving only the left two lanes open. Ramps onto I-5 were also closed in the area, including the ramps from C Street and Pershing Drive to southbound I-5, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims. Firefighters had the fire knocked down by about 4 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.Lanes on I-5 were going to be closed for at least an hour while firefighters worked to clean up the fire, the CHP log said. 825
