Doctors say a second wave of mental health devastation brought on by the pandemic is imminent and has the potential to overwhelm parts of the mental healthcare system.“This is going to be a long-haul situation,” said Chuck Ingoglia, president and CEO of The National Council of Behavioral Health, which offers services to 3,400 local mental health organizations around the country. “I’m certainly hearing from our members that they’re feeling a lot of tension right now.”In a survey of more than 5,000 people released by JAMA last week, 40.9 percent reported feeling at least one adverse mental health condition including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, tripling to quadrupling rates from one year earlier. And remarkably, 10.7 percent reported seriously considering suicide within the last 30 days.“We are concerned that these [symptoms] could get worse,” said Dr. Vail Wright, senior director of healthcare innovation at the American Psychological Association. “We’re anticipating that we’ll continue to see mental health challenges including an increase in diagnostic categories as this continues if people don’t take active steps to manage their stress.”One of those major respites has been the outdoors during the summer months. Dr. Wright says as the days get shorter and the weather gets colder more people will stay indoors, losing a source of happiness as Vitamin D boosts energy and mood. This is all happening as COVID cases across the country increase drastically. This past week 500,000 positive COVID-19 cases were reported in the United States, the most since the pandemic started, which has prompted some states to tighten their restrictions on activities and capacities in restaurants. The increase also has the potential for hospitals to leave more beds open for patients, taking away psychiatric beds in the emergency room for those who come for treatment. The shift puts even more strain on the local organizations Ignoglia oversees that have been dealing with funding issues.“Our members are reporting about a 20 percent reduction in revenue,” said Ignoglia. “You deal with that by closing programs and laying off staff, which then means you serve fewer patients which then means your revenue stays low. So it’s kind of this self-perpetuating problem that we’re having.”Ignoglia says he has been focusing on the Trump administration and Congress as a source of relief in hopes more stimulus money comes to these programs so this concern does not evolve into something worse. 2510

EL CAJON (CNS) - One person was shot and another stabbed at a house party in El Cajon late Saturday night, police say. Several 911 calls came in to police at about 11:50 p.m. Saturday reporting a fight at a party on Andover Road just east of South Second Street, El Cajon Police Lt. Eric Taylor said.Callers reported that multiple people had been kicked out and drove off in a silver car before turning around and firing shots at partygoers who were still outside, Taylor said. One person, a woman in her 20s, was shot in the abdomen. She was taken to a local hospital and was undergoing surgery in stable condition, Taylor said.No one else was hit by gunfire, but when police arrived at the home, they found a man in his 50s had also been stabbed in the buttocks, according to Taylor. The suspects had already left by the time officers arrived, and no one was in custody as of Sunday afternoon. 902

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top expert on infectious diseases, gave a live interview with The Washington Post Monday as cases of COVID-19 are spiking across the country at unprecedented levels.Fauci's interview comes just ahead of Thanksgiving — an event that health experts warn could cause further spread of the virus despite warnings from the CDC against gathering in-person.While Fauci said every family needed to assess their own situation and make their own determination, he recommended that Thanksgiving gatherings should be limited to the members of a single household. He added that if Americans do travel to another home for Thanksgiving, he recommended everyone should wear masks while indoors, except when eating or drinking. In the month of November alone, more than 3 million people across the U.S. are confirmed to have contracted COVID-19. The 3 million cases represent about 25% of all cases the country has seen since the pandemic reached the U.S. in February. The spike in cases has prompted a frightening jump in hospitalizations and deaths linked to the virus. A record 83,000 people are currently battling COVID-19 in a hospital, and for the last week, an average of 1,400 people in the U.S. have died of the virus each day.Fauci said that if Americans don't follow common-sense public health measures over the Thanksgiving holiday, that it could exacerbate the current spike in cases. He said that within two or three weeks, the already steep spike in cases could become even steeper."The chances are that you will see a surge superimposed on a surge," Fauci said.Fauci again recommended that Americans adopt uniform mask-wearing, keep social distance, avoid large crowds, gather outdoors as opposed to indoors and continuously wash hands to avoid spreading the virus. There are some encouraging signs that there may be some relief soon. On Monday, AstraZeneca joined Pfizer and Moderna in reporting that initial studies show its vaccine candidate is 90% effective in preventing the virus. All three vaccines may soon be authorized for emergency use in the coming weeks.Fauci said he hopes the encouraging news on vaccines is an "incentive" for Americans to double down on public health measures."Help is on the way," Fauci said.Fauci said Pfizer's and Moderna's vaccines could be out for distribution as soon as mid-December. However, it will be initially rationed for people in vulnerable populations before becoming available to the general public by spring 2021.Finally, Fauci says he has not yet spoken to president-elect Joe Biden. While he did not go into specifics, his comments are consistent with the Trump administration's refusal to work with Biden's transition team. The General Services Administration still has not ascertained Biden as the winner of the 2020 election, meaning the incoming Biden administration does not yet have access to funds and information a transition team would typically have. 2948

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A 16-year-old is battling life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a vehicle in the East County. The teenager was hit by the vehicle at about 8 p.m. Monday near the intersection of East Washington Avenue and Waterloo Ave., El Cajon police said.Police arrived to find the teenager unconscious in the road and transported him to a nearby hospital. The identification of the victim is being withheld, police said.Police added that the teen was with three other male teenagers, who had been running south across East Washington Ave. outside of a crosswalk when the collision occurred. The driver of the Toyota Rav4 that struck the victim remained at the scene and has been cooperating with authorities. Police said they don't believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.Witnesses told 10News the intersection can be dangerous for pedestrians in the area. 921
