SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Driving under the influence arrests have dropped noticeably in cities where ride sharing programs have expanded, a new study says.An analysis performed by Moll Law Group and the University of California says DUI arrests in San Diego dropped 32% from 2015 to 2016.The study also looked at four other major cities with declines in California: 28% in San Jose, 26% in Sacramento, 14% for Los Angeles and the San Francisco-Oakland area.“We still seeing quite a few impaired people, they’re just not sitting in the front seat,” said Mark McCullough with San Diego Police Department’s traffic division.McCullough says the declining trend began a few a years ago when more new forms of transportation became available.“Five years ago we’d run a DUI checkpoint on a Friday night and we’d arrest 20 people and up,” said McCullough, “now on any given Friday if we arrest 10-15 people that’s a busy night for us.”Experts believe there may be other reasons behind the figures declining, but it’s still a number they don’t mind going down.“You’re not using your brain to your full potential if you get arrested for a DUI,” said McCullough, “there are just so many forms of alternative transportation.” 1225

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Friends are grieving the loss of a young man killed in a South Bay crash that also sent five teenagers to the hospital. "This is like a bad dream and I want to wake up," said Ivan Nares.Nares says he got a heart-stopping call from his brother Gustavo, 18, from the emergency room Wednesday morning."He said, 'Ivan, Ivan, I need you. Please come,'" said Nares.RELATED: Driver killed in Otay Mesa SR-905 crash, several others injuredNares rushed to San Diego from his Tijuana home. His brother was a passenger in a Chrysler 300 packed with teens after a night at an indoor trampoline park.The CHP says around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, the car was headed south on State Route 905 going at a high rate of speed when it hit the center divide near the Beyer Boulevard off-ramp. The 21-year-old driver was thrown from the car and died at the scene.Three males and two females, ranging from 15- to 19-years-old, were rushed to hospitals. Among them was Nares' brother, who suffered a fractured pelvis and two broken legs. He is uninsured. Gustavo is an amateur boxer and a recent graduate of San Ysidro High. He was in the process of applying to college. Instead, he faces a tough road to recovery."The advice give to all the people, especially young people is don't drive like you are in a 'Fast and Furious' movie. Be cautious. You're not just playing with your life. You're messing with other people's lives," Nares said.Nares has yet to tell his brother that his friend died in the crash. He's waiting for the right time. Vista Way was closed over three months ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but on Saturday, June 20, guests will be allowed to return.In a press release, officials said, “Boomers Vista will build upon its longstanding commitment to cleanliness and safety by implementing a series of measures following the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention and best practices within the amusement and attractions industries.”The following measures will be in place at the Vista facility:-- The center and mini golf course will operate under limited capacity-- Face coverings/masks required for all guests and staff members; kids under 3 won’t be required to wear face coverings, guests can remove masks when eating-- Employees will be we wearing personal protective equipment such as face shields and gloves-- Six feet of social distancing between parties are required; markers are posted throughout the property, including parking lots and entrances-- Temperature checks will be conducted for all guests and workers upon entry-- Guests and all staff are being asked to frequently wash hands-- Hand sanitizer stations will be located throughout the center-- Staff will carry out frequent sanitization of high-touch surfaces and rides and high-traffic locationsFacility General Manager Garrett Gross said, “The health and safety of our Guests and Team Members continues to be our number one priority as we work to welcome guests back to the Park. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dog owners who live in Normal Heights are worried about the future of the off-leash dog park at Ward Canyon.Earlier this month, signs appeared saying the large-dog area would be closed through the end of March 2020. People who use the park say it's because a few neighbors complained about the noise to the local Advisory Committee.Because the large-dog area is closed, all sizes of dogs have been sharing the small-dog area next to it."It's really crowded," says dog owner Christina Ardon. "When people get off work, everyone's over here. It's a little bit of a madhouse.""It's intimidating to smaller dogs," says Jason Douglas-Hiley. "They won't come into the park because they're afraid of the large dogs harassing the smaller dogs."Meanwhile, the City of San Diego has plans to renovate the entire park. Renderings show the area where the large-dog park currently sits would be turned into a community garden. The small-dog park would be expanded.But, City Councilmember Chris Ward's office says there is no funding for that project, and no timetable for when it could be added to the budget.People who use the park say they're afraid it will disappear while the project sits in limbo."To have to wait 2-5 years for them to construct a new park is a lifetime for a dog," says Douglas-Hiley.Park supporters have started a petition, asking the city to safeguard the small-dog area and also fence off a different portion of Ward Canyon for large dogs to use. They're also encouraging people to go to the Adams Recreation Advisory Group meeting on October 22 to voice their concerns.The meeting is at 6 pm, at the Adams Recreation Center (3491 Adams Avenue). 1685
