BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Police authorities in Beijing launched a microblog, blogs and a podcast on Sunday in the latest move in its public relations campaign.This came about half a month after police in the Chinese capital set up a public relations office to enhance transparency and interaction with residents.The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau officially launched its new media services at the news portals sina.com, sohu.com and 163.com and video-sharing site ku6.com after a three-day trial.The services, branded as "Safe Beijing", offer a new communication channel between police and the general public. Microblogs, for example, have become a quick and popular source of news and information for increasingly more Chinese citizens.Fu Zhenghua, head of the bureau, said last month that law enforcement activities could easily be hot topics in the media and among the public in this highly open and transparent Internet era."With the aid of modern technology, we hope to communicate with residents and vulnerable groups with frankness and sincerity, as well as promote social justice," said Fu.In the first microblog post, the bureau pledged to offer the latest police affairs news, anti-fraud tips and stories of model community police.The bureau has posted dozens of practical anti-fraud and anti-theft tips and police affairs news, including training programs for special police and stories about model police officers serving their first day on the police force.More than 17,600 people logged onto the microblog service on Sunday and some posts received hundreds of comments.Most welcomed the services, saying it can bridge the gap between police and average citizens and change the traditionally mysterious and superior image of police officers."This is really a good thing. Let's applaud the social progress and gradual government openness," said netizen Tongtianniu."Welcome! DALIAN, July 26 (Xinhua) -- China has stopped the Dalian oil spill from reaching international waters, an official said Monday, admitting the clean-up work was "arduous."Dai Yulin, vice mayor of Dalian City, Liaoning Province, where oil pipelines exploded on July 16, said workers had contained the oil slick, stopping it from reaching the open sea."But the next step, which is clearing it up, is an arduous task," Dai told a press briefing."Some of the slick has been mopped up, but it's not easy to get rid of the rest," he said.The clean-up has involved 266 oil-skimming vessels and 8,150 fishing boats, Dai told reporters.Maritime agencies and oil companies have laid down more than 40,000 meters of oil barriers and 65 tonnes of oil absorbent mats, he said.Despite this, oil could still be seen on some beaches.An explosion hit an oil pipeline 0.9 meters in diameter at 6:20 p.m. on July 16 and triggered an adjacent smaller pipeline to explode near Dalian Xingang Port. Both pipelines are owned by China's No.1 oil and gas producer CNPC.Improper injections of strongly oxidizing desulfurizer into the oil pipeline after a 300,000-tonne tanker had finished unloading its oil caused the explosion, results of a State Administration of Work Safety and Ministry of Public Security investigation showed Friday.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China's exports surged by 48.5 percent year on year in May, while the imports climbed 48.3 percent, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) announced Thursday.The growth rate for exports was 18.1 percentage points up from the figure for April, and the import growth rate dipped slightly from 49.7 percent reported in April.Exports totalled 131.76 billion U.S. dollars in May, said a statement on the GAS website, adding imports topped 112.23 billion U.S. dollars.Total foreign trade value rose 48.4 percent from a year earlier to 243.99 billion U.S. dollars in May. GUANGZHOU, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Two nuclear power stations under construction have not been affected by a mild earthquake that struck south China's Guangdong Province Friday, company officials said.According to the provincial earthquake monitoring network, an earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter Scale Friday hit the junction of Taishan City and Yangjiang City where the two nuclear power stations are located."The nuclear power stations being built were not at all affected as the facilities were designed to withstand at least 8-magnitude earthquakes," said a spokesman of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding Corporation (CGNPC).He said the sites of these two power stations were carefully chosen and approved by the China Earthquake Administration. Records show that the strongest earthquake that shook the sites did not exceed 6.0 in magnitude.The construction of the Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station -- with a full installed capacity of 6 million kilowatts -- started in December 2008 and is planned to be put into commercial operation in 2013. The construction of the Taishan Nuclear Power Station -- with an initial installed capacity of 3.5 million kilowatts -- started in 2009 and is expected to be completed around 2014, the CGNPC said.
