SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As school districts across San Diego County work to piece together how the next school year will look like and how they’ll pay for it, others are joining forces to try and get more resources.Two of the largest school districts in California, Los Angeles Unified and San Diego Unified, announced they plan to pool their purchasing power to secure PPE and other equipment that’s needed to safely reopen.They join the other districts in the struggle to find out how to fund all the changes they’ll have to make to keep up with the state’s guidelines in dealing with COVID-19.Last week, the state’s superintendent of schools released a handbook that looks at the options of possibly splitting up students based on grade level, having them report to school on two designated days, and doing distance learning on the other days. They’re also looking to stagger start and dismissal times.While some parents believe having students return to school is easier than virtual learning, San Diego Education Association President Kisha Borden said, “I also think it will create a need for more teachers, we may have to utilize more of our visiting teachers.”The state superintendent is also recommending face coverings before entering campus. They will not need to wear it while eating.In a statement, LA Unified Superintendent Austin Beutner and SD Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten said:“Schools across the state are working around the clock to plan for reopening because students must have the chance to continue their education. Unfortunately, last week the state published 55 pages of new guidelines on districts with no funding attached. Unless the funding needs are addressed comprehensively in the state budget, there is no way schools will be able to follow all the new recommended guidelines required for a safe, responsible reopening in the fall. It is inappropriate to pronounce public guidelines as recommended best practices and then leave districts without the necessary funding to implement them. Schools must be able to reassure parents, students and staff that their wellbeing is being addressed and these guidelines will now be viewed as a minimum threshold.”Meanwhile, in Sacramento, lawmakers just approved a state spending plan that rejects Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed cuts to public education, as the state faces an estimated billion budget deficit because of the coronavirus.Even though the budget plan has been voted on, this could still change, as the governor has the power to veto, sign, or make changes to what’s been given to him by the legislature. 2600

The former presidential candidate stood alongside protestors at The Westin Hotel on Friday. “Nobody wants to do this. We would all like to work right now,” says employee Arturo Ramirez.Ramirez has been working at The Westin Hotel since February. With the high cost of living in San Diego, Ramirez says its sometimes hard to pay the bills.“My mother and I, we work at the same hotel. We’re struggling to pay ,100 in rent," Ramirez says.Bernie Sanders took the stage to show his support to workers during his visit to San Diego.“We’re saying to Marriott who owns Westin, we’re saying to every corporation in this country who make billions of dollars in profit, pay your workers a living wage," Sanders said to a crowd of protesters.Employees are asking for a raise of at least an hour and a chance to save for their retirement.“It’s a billion dollar company that needs to pay the workers a living wage so they can live in the city of San Diego," says Bridgett Browning, President of Unite Here Union. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Civil rights activists called for change Monday following the publication of a cartoon in the San Diego Union Tribune the group described as an “insulting image”. Rev. Shane Harris, president of the People’s Alliance for Justice, and other San Diego leaders held a news conference after a meeting with UT publisher Jeff Light.San Diego Union Tribune cartoonist Steve Breen created a picture of authors James Baldwin and Toni Morrison, and actor Jussie Smollett, with the title “Famous African American Story Tellers," according to Harris' email. The image was published Friday, Harris said."It was egregious to us all," Harris said at his news conference.Smollett is accused of falsely reporting being attacked by two masked men in Chicago. He reportedly told police his attackers yelled racial and anti-gay slurs and referenced President Donald Trump's campaign slogan, according to the Associated Press.Harris demanded last week that Smollett be fired from his role in the show, "Empire."Monday, Harris said Breen apologized for the cartoon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Assemblymember Todd Gloria, D-San Diego, praised state lawmakers for sending a bill to the governor that would restrict gun shows at Del Mar Fairgrounds.Assembly Bill 893 would ban the sale of guns or ammunition anywhere on the Del Mar Fairgrounds property beginning in 2021, according to Gloria's office. The bill passed the California Senate 27-11 Tuesday.Anyone who violates the bill could face a misdemeanor charge, according to the bill.Gloria is a co-author of the legislation alongside Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner-Horvath, D-Encinitas, and Assemblywomen Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego.“This is a victory for gun sense and making our communities safer in San Diego,” said Gloria.“This bill is about offering more than thoughts and prayers. It’s about policy and action and listening to the communities around the Fairgrounds who no longer want these events taking place. In California, we value people over guns and this bill makes that clear."Gov. Gavin Newsom has until Oct. 13 to sign or veto the legislation.Gun shows at the fairgrounds has been hotly debated over the last year. In September 2018, the 22nd DAA's Board of Directors voted to temporarily suspend gun shows at the Del Mar Fairgrounds until the state developed new safety policies around them. The decision ended the Crossroads of the West gun show's contract with the fairgrounds after nearly three decades.In February 2019, the three Assemblymembers introduced AB 893 into the state Assembly. The bill passed the Assembly 48-16 in April. Then in June 2019, a judge ruled that gun shows could continue at the fairgrounds while the court considered a lawsuit against the fairground's decision to suspend the shows.Throughout the the back-and-forth, the legislation has been opposed by the NRA, Gun Owners of California, and the California Rifle and Pistol Association. 1867
