(KGTV) - Organizers of the Imperial Beach Sun and Sea Festival say they're ready to go this year, despite a recent sewage spill from Tijuana."It's always on my mind," says Co-Chair Shirley Nakawatase. "I think it's an ongoing situation that we have at the beach."Nakawatase says the spill shouldn't impact the festival, because they only use ocean water for the sandcastle competition. If the water is considered unsafe, they can use fresh water purchased from Cal-Am."We're going to request daily testing to make sure the bacteria count is low," she says, noting that testing will begin on the Monday before the festival.A recent sewage spill dumped 3.5 million gallons of sewage into the ocean south of Imperial Beach, prompting a full closure of the coast in the area. HUDSON, Ohio — A Hudson woman who hosted a large house party at a rental home in October was convicted in Municipal Court Tuesday for violating state health orders to prevent the spread of coronavirus.The woman was convicted of violations prohibited and criminal damaging, both second-degree misdemeanors, according to court records.On Oct. 10, the woman used a website to rent a home in the 6800 block of Windsor Road in Hudson, according to court records. More than 150 people attended the party, in excess of the number of people allowed by the mass gatherings order that limits groups to no more than 10 people.Attendees caused more than ,500 in damage to the property, according to court records.The Akron Beacon Journal reported that on the night of the party, police were called to the scene and multiple vehicles were towed throughout the night. (AP) — Wildlife officials say a goose is recovering after being found with a large arrow through its neck at the same Southern California park where a goose and a gull swallowed prescription pills last month.The Los Angeles Times reported Monday that the goose flew around with the arrow in its neck for a week before it was finally captured at Carr Park in Huntington Beach.The arrow was removed and the bird was given antibiotics, IV fluids and painkillers. It's expected to fully recover.Shortly before Christmas, a Canadian goose and a ring-bill gull had their systems flushed after eating pills — including sedatives — that someone dumped in the park. Both birds have recovered after being treated at a wildlife center.Officials don't know whether the two incidents are related. 816

In an industry like cosmetology, where all services revolve around hair, skin and nails, getting up close and personal to people is a big part of the job.For those looking to make a career in the beauty business, the pandemic is taking a toll. “I had 84 students pre-COVID,” said Donna Kramer, executive director at Empire Beauty School. “I have 72 right now.”Kramer says COVID-19 initially caused the campus to close.It’s recently reopened with new restrictions set by the local health department. Class sizes are smaller, fewer clients can come in due to social distancing and all students have to wear masks.The area that’s taken the biggest hit, however, is attendance.“It’s kind of toying with people’s personal lives,” Kramer said. “We’ve had students that have had to miss a lot of school because of daycare issues. We’ve had students that have had to actually stay away temporarily because their spouses.”According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of hairstylists and cosmetologists is projected to drop by 1% by the end of the decade, which is leaving many students concerned that their career opportunities might be going down the drain.“I know a lot of students kind of have that fear of not being able to find a job now with COVID,” said Alexis Lovato, a cosmetology student at Empire Beauty School.Lovato says many of her classmates are concerned about their employment options once their training is complete.“I think a lot of its just worried about being placed and what’s going to be available for them after their graduation,” she said.Kramer says despite the challenges, students are still getting their hours in and while hands-on training may be a little different, it’s a style they can adapt to.“This industry is going to really flourish once we can get through this,” she said. 1826
