SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Honda has agreed to pay million to settle allegations surrounding airbag failures.The lawsuit was brought by a collation of Attorneys General in 48 states.According to the Attorney General of New York the settlement, "Concludes a multistate investigation into Honda's alleged failure to inform regulators and consumers of issues related to the significant risk of rupture in the frontal airbag systems installed in certain model cars, which could cause metal fragments to fly into the passenger compartments of many Honda and Acura vehicles."The California Attorney General’s Office says Honda also agreed to a number of injunctive terms to protect consumers, including requirements that it include design features that protect vehicle occupants in the event of an airbag rupture and a prohibition from engaging in false or misleading advertising related to the safety of its frontal airbags."For years, Honda failed to warn consumers and regulators of the potential dangers of its airbags. That type of business practice not only violates Californians' trust but endangers lives," said Attorney General Xavier Becerra. "Every time we get into our vehicle, safety is a priority. In case any company forgets that California is ready to remind you and hold you accountable."ABC 10News reached out to Honda for a comment on the settlement but did not hear back.According to the California Attorney General’s office, the ruptures have resulted in at least 14 deaths and over 200 injuries in the United States alone."It's a win for the consumer," said Alexander Brangman.On Sept. 7, 2014, Brangman's daughter Jewel rear-ended a van in her rental car on a freeway in Los Angeles. Four vehicles were involved. Everyone walked away from the crash, except her.Brangman said the shrapnel pierced her neck. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Finding a place to live is about to get easier for low-income San Diegans.Right now, landlords are not required to accept tenants who receive Section 8 rental assistance. However, in August 2019, a new amendment to San Diego's source of income ordinance will prevent landlords from declining a tenant-based only on the household receiving rental assistance."It's safe and everything is right across the street from me," said Maria Hernandez.That's how Maria Hernandez describes her neighborhood in Poway.Maria uses the Section 8 voucher program to help pay the rent. She says she waited about five years for that help."You know without Section 8, I don't know where me or my daughter would be," Hernandez said.Hernandez is lucky. Her landlord accepts Section 8. That's not always the case."I guess there's like that stereotype of people that are on Section 8, you know they think people are going to destroy their homes that people are poor who live on Section 8."Starting August 1, 2019 landlords and property managers in the City of San Diego cannot refuse an application from a prospective tenant, charge a higher deposit, or treat them differently in any other way based on their source of income.According to the San Diego Housing Commission, under the new ordinance, landlords and property managers cannot advertise or state a preference for certain sources of income. The tenant must still meet other requirements for tenancy and have the financial resources to pay any rental amounts not covered by the voucher/subsidy. Landlords and property managers must include any rental payments made by the voucher/subsidy when determining whether the applicant meets the minimum income requirements. Landlords and property managers may ask what an applicant's source of income is as long they do not discriminate based on that information."I want to give an equal treatment to every single San Diegan," said San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez. "No matter how you're going to pay your rent, everyone should be looked at as an equal applicant."Gomez championed the changes to the city's law. She says for some it could be life-changing, allowing renters to choose what part of town they live in not just who accepts their form of payment."It's not just about housing, but better jobs and just an ability to not have that stress," Gomez said.The anti-discrimination policy is just one move making things more comfortable in San Diego.According to SDHC, "Effective July 1, 2019, SDHC increased its payment standards for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance program, which helps more than 15,000 low-income households pay their rent. Raising the "payment standard" expands rental opportunities for families by allowing them to consider housing units with higher monthly contract rents, which are paid by a combination of rental assistance from SDHC and a portion of the tenants' income."Also, starting in August, the SDHC will launch the Landlord Partnership Program, which provides incentives to landlords to rent housing units to SDHC Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance participants. SDHC tells 10news it will expand the Landlord Services Team, composed of specialized staff, to provide quality customer service to landlords and support families in the move process to ensure timely lease-ups.The agency also launched The Landlord Advisory Committee to identify best practices, programs, and incentives to attract new landlords to the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Early data suggests the coronavirus vaccine candidates from both Pfizer and Moderna are safe and effective, but some patients may experience side effects that can feel intense but resolve quickly.More than 37,000 people have taken either the Pfizer or the Moderna vaccine in a Phase 3 trial. Both vaccines require two doses, and side effects were more common after the second dose.Pfizer reported 3.8% of the recipients felt fatigue and 2% experienced headache, based on preliminary data from its Phase 3 trial. These symptoms are classified as Grade 3 or “severe” adverse events because they can interfere with daily activity.Moderna reported more Grade 3 side effects. There was fatigue in 9.7% of recipients, muscle pain in 8.9%, joint pain in 5.2%, headache in 4.5%, pain in 4.1%, and redness at the injection site in 2%.Neither company reported side effects that affected less than 2% of participants in their press releases but more detailed data will be released.Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Francisco, said the symptoms typically appear in the first few hours after vaccination and resolve within 24 to 36 hours.“The most troublesome of them for people has been low grade temperatures, but they go away in many cases without even using anti-inflammatories” like ibuprofen, he said.Experts say the vaccines appear to have a higher rate of Grade 3 side effects than the typical flu vaccine, even high-dose flu vaccines, but they say there’s no reason to worry about so-called reactogenic symptoms like muscle and joint pain.“Usually if it hurts that's a positive sign. That's your immune system actually responding to the immunization so that it's going to be able to fight off the virus in the future,” said Dr. Shane Crotty, a virologist at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.Both leading COVID-19 vaccines rely on the same platform: messenger RNA. This technique has never been used in an approved vaccine before.There is no evidence yet of any long-term side effects, but they can’t be ruled out either. The fragility of mRNA makes it unlikely to linger in the body but any vaccine could theoretically cause disruptions in the immune system, experts said.The FDA required vaccine makers to follow vaccine recipients for a median of two months after the second dose before seeking approval to detect longer term side effects.“I think that's a pretty good window to see a bad side effect like Guillain-Barré,” said Dr. Christian Ramers of Family Health Centers of San Diego. “It really should show up within those two months after the second shot.”Guillain-Barré Syndrome can cause paralysis and some flu vaccines have been associated with increased rates of it. But the increased rates are still extremely rare: an extra 1 to 2 cases for every million doses, according to the CDC.Dr. Ramers said the long-term consequences of contracting COVID-19 are much more concerning.“This is not a virus that you want to get,” he said. “There are unpredictable effects. There are healthy young people developing clots and strokes.”A study on COVID-19 patients in Michigan found that two months after hospitalization, 32.5% had a lingering cough or difficulty breathing and 11% reported new or worsening trouble caring for themselves.Both the FDA and the CDC are taking extra steps to monitor people who get the vaccine early for any side effects.
