BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China's drought relief authorities said Tuesday heavy rains had eased the drought in southwest China's Sichuan Province, but dry weather and high temperatures continued in other affected regions.Compared with data collected last Sunday, people and livestock facing shortage of drinking water in Sichuan had decreased by 500,000 and 560,000 respectively by Tuesday, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH).Heavy rains also reduced the area of affected arable land in Sichuan by 2.33 million mu (155,333 hectares) by Tuesday, according to the SFDH.However, drought still persisted in other areas, including the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as rain in these regions was far from adequate.As of Tuesday, drought had left 24.62 million people and 18.08 million livestock short of drinking water, said the statement.

CHICAGO, April 21 (Xinhua) -- The Chicago-based Boeing Company reported on Wednesday that its first-quarter net earnings were 519 million U.S. dollars, down 15 percent from 610 million dollars in the same quarter last year, citing the health care legislation charge.The aerospace and defense giant said in its first quarterly financial report that total revenues for the first three months were 15.22 billion dollars, down from 16.50 billion dollars in the prior year quarter while the earnings per share was down to 70 cents from 86 cents one year ago.Boeing indicated that the results for the quarter reflect solid performance across core businesses and a previously disclosed 20 cents charge per share on health care legislation, while the year- ago quarter results were reduced by 31 cents per share on a charge due to poor market conditions in commercial airplanes."With clear progress on the 787 and 747-8, solid financial performance and marked improvement in our customer outlook, we continue to draw on the positive momentum we saw at the end of 2009," said Jim McNerney, Boeing chairman, president and chief executive officer.Boeing's earnings guidance for 2010 is pegged at 3.50 dollars to 3.80 dollars per share, reduced from 3.70 to 4.00 per share due to the charge on health care legislation. BEIJING, April. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose 2.4 percent year on year in March, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced here Thursday.The figure was 0.7 percentage points lower than the previous month, and for the first quarter, it was up 2.2 percent.The producer price index (PPI), a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 5.9 percent in March from a year earlier.China's PPI went up 5.2 percent year on year in the first quarter, said NBS.

WUHAN, March 26 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday started building a canal from the middle section of the Yangtze River to a tributary that connects with China's South-North Water Diversion project.Costing more than six billion yuan (880 million U.S. dollars), the 67.23 km project will divert 3.1 billion cubic meters of water every year from Yangtze's Jingjiang section to the Hanjiang River, one of the major sources of water for north China once the diversion project is complete.China's South-North Water Diversion project is designed to divert water from the water-rich south to the dry north.The central part of the project will divert water from Danjiangkou Reservoir on the Hanjiang River to north China cities like Beijing and Tianjin.According to research by Hubei provincial environmental protection bureau, without water from the canal the Hanjiang River would only have one third of its average runoff once water is diverted, and the water level of middle and lower reaches of Hanjiang would drop by 0.5 meter.The canal, which will be completed in 2014, will prevent problems arising such as algae pollution if water levels were decreased dramatically, said Shen Xiaoli, an engineer with the Hubei Environmental Sciences Institute.The canal is expected to benefit about 8.9 million people and 43,000 hectares of farmland in the lower reaches of Hanjiang.Once completed the five to six meters deep canal could be used by ships weighing more than 1,000 tonnes, facilitating transportation of coal from the north to the south, said Xu Shaojun, head of the Hubei Provincial Investigation and Design Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower.
