But how he learned these skills is a complicated journey.“It was like graduating from the school of hard knocks, literally,” says Jackson remembering.That school was at the California City Correctional Facility.“I was incarcerated on weapons charges,” says Jackson.Jackson joined an Oceanside gang when he was just 14 and was in prison by the age of 24. After years in and out, he chose a different path that would offer a new life. He joined a prison work program that taught him how to clean and disinfect hospitals with the highest standards.“Everything I know about cleaning, that’s going to be my ticket when I get home,” added Jackson thinking back to his final months in prison.And that’s when Jackson was introduced to Defy Ventures. He spent five months in an entrepreneurial training program, culminating in a pitch competition judged by Venture Capitalists and CEOs.Mark Bowles, a San Diego biotech and technology entrepreneur, was there to hear Jackson’s pitch.“To really make a difference, you have to do more than just put a sign in your yard or post memes. I think you have to actually go do something, and this program does make a big difference,” said Bowles. “You’re not with him very long before you realize this guy is shot out of a cannon.”After several pitch rounds, Jackson ended up placing second.And by coincidence, that very night, he was released from prison. Bowles and his team invested in Jackson’s startup. And when COVID hit, he was hired fulltime by Truvian.“He’s a full capitalist now,” adds Bowles with a smile. “He’s got stock options, and he’s working in a high-tech company.”To understand what a life-transformation this is for Jackson, you must first know the recidivism rate for prisoners after three to five years of release, according to the DOJ, is roughly 70%. Timothy has been out of prison for 3 ? years and continues to rebuild his life.“For somebody to be able to do that, it just spoke volumes to me,” says Lt. He was Jackson’s initial arresting officer.“My first experience with Timothy was on the night we arrested him,” adds Valdovinos.Now the two speak together, offering a way out to troubled youth in Oceanside.“It’s my favorite part of the program,” says Valdovinos. “When we let the kids know our past and that bond we have, it is incredible the look on their faces.”For Jackson, it is a surreal moment every time.“I never thought that I would be asked by law enforcement to do such a thing,” says Jackson. “You won’t catch me on the other side of that recidivism number.” 3680

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wednesday, San Diegans who live in their cars rallied in Ocean Beach to press the city to allow living in vehicles, as residents in various neighborhoods pressure the city to ban the policy once again.Earlier this year, San Diego City Council members repealed its vehicle habitation ordinance after a federal judge found it unconstitutional which halted all enforcement.Then in March, Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced an effort to bring a ban back. The ordinance would prohibit residents from sleeping in their cars from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. within 500 feet of a school or house.Residents say reversing the ban leads to broken glass, bottles of urine, drug paraphanelia, and excrement on sidewalks in some areas. But supporters of the policy said Wednesday they don't park in front of homes or litter along roads.The city says they’ve received hundreds and hundreds of complaints about what people living in cars have done to their neighborhoods. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two people were found dead Sunday morning after authorities responded to multiple 911 calls of a capsized boat off the coast of Ocean Beach.Authorities received a call about the incident around 3:30 a.m. When they arrived, authorities found a 28-foot vessel overturned along the shore with two mean deceased nearby."About a 28 foot vessel overturned in the shore, on the sand," says SD Fire & Rescue Lt. Maureen Hodges. "We do have two victims that were down on the sand."The incident happened shortly after 3:30 Sunday morning. Customs and Border Protection officers told ABC 10News the boat capsized off the shore, throwing the two people into the water. There's still no word on if any other people were in the boat.Border Patrol also responded to the incident along with San Diego Police, lifeguards, and San Diego Fire-Rescue. CBP believes this is the latest incident to involve a human-smuggling effort gone horribly wrong.So far in the 2020 Fiscal Year, there have been 210 incidents involving these kind of "panga" boats off the coast of San Diego. The record was set in 2013, when CBP responded to 243 such incidents. With two months left in the fiscal year, 2020 is on pace to break the record.ABC 10News asked if the rise in panga boat incidents could be related to border closures because of the coronavirus, forcing would-be smugglers to turn to the water.
