FUZHOU, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan has called for concrete measures to promote the construction of the economic zone on the western side of the Taiwan Strait.Wang made the remarks during his two-day inspection tour to the southeastern Fujian Province that ended Friday.Wang also asked local departments of commerce, customs, quality inspection, finance and tourism to make efforts to support the construction of the economic zone.During his visit to Pingtan Island, the fifth largest island in China, Wang inspected a bridge under construction that will connect the island with the mainland, as well as industrial development and the tourism industry on the island.Wang also visited the Wuyi Mountain and some tourist attractions in Fuzhou city, and urged a sound development of local tourism industry.

NANNING, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed and one was missing amid heavy rains that pounded a scenic city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region for the past two days, Guangxi's flood-control and drought relief headquarters said Saturday.Continuous rainstorms triggered mud-rock flows Thursday night in Ziyuan County of Guilin City, killing three people there, the headquarters said.On Friday morning, a fisherman was swept away by rain-triggered floods in Gongcheng County of Guilin.Rainstorms had incurred property losses to about 19,000 people in Guilin as more than 30 houses collapsed, 1,100 hectares of farmland were inundated and many public facilities were damaged.The economic damage was estimated at 13.2 million yuan (1.9 million U.S. dollars).In southern province of Guangdong, three rainstorms pelted Guangzhou, the provincial capital, over the past week, with rainfall up to 440 mm, a record high in 25 years.The precipitation equalled to a quarter of the city's annual rainfall, according to meteorological statistics, said Lin Liangxun, Guangdong's chief weather forecaster.Guangdong has reported one missing. BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday called for greater efforts to fulfill the energy-saving and emission reduction goals set out in the nation's 11th Five Year Plan.According to the plan laid out in 2006, China will cut its per unit GDP energy consumption by 20 percent compared with 2005 levels by the end of 2010.Relevant departments must work harder to help enterprises close down old and polluting production facilities, he said at a State Council meeting.The departments must also suspend approval of new projects by enterprises failing to eliminate backward production capacity, he added.He also stressed efforts to curb the expansion of high energy-consuming industry, and emphasized strict control of exports of goods produced in an energy-inefficient way.Wen said energy-saving and emission reduction are priorities for the construction and transportation industries.Public institutions nationwide are expected to lower their energy consumption by 5 percent year on year in 2010, he added.More energy-conservation and emission-reduction publicity campaigns should be organized to promote the development of "green" consumption, he said.

YUSHU, Qinghai, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese authorities are working to protect the quake survivors in the northwestern province of Qinghai from potential secondary disasters.The government has provided sufficient food, drinking water and tents for more than 200,000 quake survivors, but landslides, floods and disease outbreaks may still threaten their lives.The magnitude 7.1 quake has killed at least 2,220 people, with 70 still missing and more than 12,000 injured.Recent rain has raised the risk of landslides as the devastating quake and aftershocks has destabilized mountain slopes. The rainy season starting in late May or early June will make the situation worse.A total of 139 survivors were evacuated to safety 7 km away from their make-shift homes in Changu Village of the quake-hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Region early Tuesday morning as rain-triggered landslides threatening their safety."It's still an arduous task to prevent and guard against secondary disasters," said Wang Jianbin, deputy director of the Qinghai provincial land and resources bureau.
