SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With seniors across the state being told to stay “self-isolated,” local governments and non-profits are working to make sure basic needs are taken care of. Serving Seniors, a non-profit that serves meals to low-income seniors, says it has closed all of its senior centers and congregate meals. Instead, it has ramped up its home meal delivery operation and to-go services. “We have the capacity but it is causing some significant logistical challenges,” said Paul Downey, CEO of Serving Seniors. A company, that according to its website, ‘Cleans beyond what the eye can see.’ And in the age of COVID, business is good.“I’ve actually been able to bring people who needed work a source of income and employment,” says Jackson.For an essential business like Truvian Sciences, a COVID outbreak and loss of employees would be a devastating blow to its progress.“People touch stuff all day long. I’m a TSA guy,” says Jackson wiping down cabinet handles.T-S-A is Jackson’s term for Touch Sensitive Areas. He knows where bacteria live and how to kill it. But how he learned these skills is a complicated journey.“It was like graduating from the school of hard knocks, literally,” says Jackson remembering.That school was at the California City Correctional Facility.“I was incarcerated on weapons charges,” says Jackson.Jackson joined an Oceanside gang when he was just 14 and was in prison by the age of 24. After years in and out, he chose a different path that would offer a new life. He joined a prison work program that taught him how to clean and disinfect hospitals with the highest standards.“Everything I know about cleaning, that’s going to be my ticket when I get home,” added Jackson thinking back to his final months in prison.And that’s when Jackson was introduced to Defy Ventures. He spent five months in an entrepreneurial training program, culminating in a pitch competition judged by Venture Capitalists and CEOs.Mark Bowles, a San Diego biotech and technology entrepreneur, was there to hear Jackson’s pitch.“To really make a difference, you have to do more than just put a sign in your yard or post memes. I think you have to actually go do something, and this program does make a big difference,” said Bowles. “You’re not with him very long before you realize this guy is shot out of a cannon.”After several pitch rounds, Jackson ended up placing second.And by coincidence, that very night, he was released from prison. Bowles and his team invested in Jackson’s startup. And when COVID hit, he was hired fulltime by Truvian.“He’s a full capitalist now,” adds Bowles with a smile. “He’s got stock options, and he’s working in a high-tech company.”To understand what a life-transformation this is for Jackson, you must first know the recidivism rate for prisoners after three to five years of release, according to the DOJ, is roughly 70%. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Voters across San Diego County could end up with the final say over massive housing developments proposed for the backcountry.That's if voters themselves approve an initiative headed to the March 2020 ballot. The measure, called S.O.S., for Safeguard our San Diego Countryside, would trigger a public countywide vote anytime the County Board of Supervisors moves to increase density in the general plan to make way for more housing. "When you put cities where there are no roads, where there isn't fire service, there aren't schools, the cost of the infrastructure is going to be borne by the general taxpayer," said Mark Jackson, with the Yes on S.O.S. campaign. But a group of developers, economists and union are sounding the alarm about the initiative, which they say would make the region's housing crisis even worse. A county report found that the public vote would add a year of delay to projects and increase the cost by as much as .3 million. Meanwhile, housing prices would rise as supply remains tight. "Many new officers have young families, and those families are hit the hardest by anti-growth and anti-housing measures like S.O.S.," said Jack Schaeffer, president of the San Diego Police Officers Association. Both sides agree San Diego County needs more housing. However, the proponents of the measure note the general plan already calls for 60,000 new homes for all income levels. Those opposed counter that those would largely be expensive, built on multi-acre lots. They add that this initiative could impact development proposals with as little as six housing units. The initiative made its way to the March ballot after the "yes" campaign got 107,000 signatures. That's the same election in which voters will decide the fate of the massive Newland Sierra development in Escondido, a 2,000-home master plan the county approved in 2018.
