SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Since a movie theater was first added to Horton Plaza in 1985, San Diegans downtown have had cinema options at their fingertips.That is, until the plaza fell on tough times, as business slowed and patrons gained more options for retail and entertainment downtown.The trend has now reached the plaza's Regal movie theater, which closed its doors this year. A sign posted on the entrance of the theater says the location was to close on Jan. 27.Since then, Regal Theaters says theater-goers should visit the next closest location — Rancho Del Rey — to redeem discounted tickets or gift cards.RELATED: Plans for Horton Plaza mall reveal tech campus, retail revitalizationThe departure of the theater heralds the next phase planned for the once iconic shopping center, as only a few businesses remain.Plans revealed last year show real estate firm Stockdale Capital Partners, which has purchased the property in 2018, has other ideas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo visitors are getting their first look at two endangered Amur leopard cubs born at the zoo in April.The unnamed cubs, born April 26, will have their first veterinary exam this week which will reveal the sex of the cubs."The cubs are climbing up on the rocks, they are getting into the trees, sometimes listening to mom and sometimes not," said Kelly Murphy, senior wildlife care specialist, San Diego Zoo. "Their personalities are still developing, and I’m looking forward to see what they become."The cubs' mother, Satka, has ventured out with the newborns daily and is already showing her kids how to stalk and climb, the zoo says. The animals are being raised in the park's Africa Rocks leopard habitat.Amur leopards are the rarest of the big cat species on Earth. There are fewer than 100 Amur leopards believed to exist in the habitats of Russia and China. The species has been decimated in the wild due to loss of habitat and poaching for their thick coats. 1003

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State Students created public service announcements, as part of a competition, to encourage their peers to take precautions and stop the spread of the coronavirus. Thursday the university announced two more students tested positive for the virus, making the total four since move in.The County of San Diego and SDSU will use the PSAs online as part of a new ad campaign, according to the county.The university came to the county amid a spike in cases among young people age 20-29. San Diego County reported 25% of positive cases belong to that age group."We're asking people of your generation of your age group to do the right thing," Dr. Hala Madanat, Director of the School of Public Health at SDSU, said. She led the charge to create the competition."I really was hoping that we would hear from the age group where we were struggling to get adherence to the guidelines and be the ones to encourage their peers," to follow the guidelines she said.One of the three winners, Senior JakeBryan Bonifacio, said he felt an obligation to use his skills to help. "It [the pandemic] is very concerning so that’s why I felt compelled to share this opportunity, share my video."Bonifacio is a Marketing major and already had the tools to create a video. He said he used his own camera and editing software.He said it was most important to create an impact using levity and positivity. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several San Diego families got their loved ones home in time for the holidays.The Crew of the Future USS Tulsa arrived in San Diego Wednesday.  The ship is a brand new littoral combat ship that completed its maiden voyage from the Austal Shipyard in Mobile Alabama.The crew, from San Diego, had been gone for eight months. Before arriving in San Diego, the ship made several port calls and completed a successful transit through the Panama Canal.The ship’s commissioning ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 16, 2019, in San Francisco.  That is when the vessel will officially join the fleet. 628

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some of our toughest Marines have four legs. These military working dogs are trained and trusted to protect service members and civilians overseas and at home."The bond between handler and K-9 is indescribable. When I was assigned a dog, I could look at my dog and know what it needed before it could tell me, and vice versa," said Lt. Kristopher Evers, part of the military police force at Camp Pendleton. All military dogs begin their journey at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, selected for their willingness to work. After basic training, they're sent to a new post and assigned a handler. K-9's trained in the Military Working Dog Program at Camp Pendleton go on to either serve alongside military police on the base or in conflicts overseas. The Marine Corps has nearly 300 working dogs; the entire military has about 2,700, according to the United States War Dogs Association, Inc. Handlers use the Agility Course at Camp Pendleton to train K-9 Marines to perform outside their comfort zone, giving them the confidence to do the job. Dogs are tasked with jobs like detecting explosives, narcotics, and apprehending suspects."Training is consistent, it's every day, and it's all the time," said Evers. Evers says the dogs are very much Marines and an important part of their military family. One of the most famous K-9 heroes is Lucca, remembered for leading 400 patrols with no human casualties on her watch. Lucca retired after losing her leg to an IED and passed away in 2018."They're special, in my mind, they're special. They love to work, they love coming to work, they love seeing their handler, they love getting in that patrol car, they love putting that collar on - and they're just always happy, these dogs live in the moment," said Evers.
