Starbucks has reached gender and race pay equity among all US employees in similar roles, the company said on Wednesday."This milestone is the result of years of work and commitment," said Lucy Helm, executive vice president and chief partner officer at Starbucks, in a statement."We've worked hard for a couple of years now to ensure we can get there," Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson told CNN's Maggie Lake on Wednesday.The coffee company added that it will now tell American job candidates the pay range for any position in an effort to increase transparency.Helm explained that the company has been striving for pay equity for about decade. Last year, it was at 99.7% parity. Women make up about one-third of the company's executive team.Starbucks uses several tools to make sure bias doesn't impact how much employees make. The company regularly checks for compensation gaps among employees, and uses a calculator to determine starting pay rate targets based on experience. It doesn't ask job candidates about their salary history, and the company analyzes raises to make sure they're fair.It is working with women's organizations like Billie Jean King's Leadership Initiative and the National Partnership for Women & Families to help guide its efforts."One of the most important things to get right is starting pay," said Sara Bowen, the leader of the Starbucks Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility team.Research shows that women, on average, earn around 80 cents for every dollar a man makes. The gap is even wider for women of color."If a job candidate comes to Starbucks making 70 or 80 cents on the dollar, and we use that as the basis for her pay at Starbucks, we simply import gender inequality into our own system," she said. "Prior salary can be tainted and should not dictate how we pay."Johnson told Lake that the pay parity achievement is "another example of us taking care of our [employees]."The company also made a commitment to reach gender pay parity at all of its company-owned locations around the world.A number of companies are starting to pay attention to gender wage gaps among their own employees.In a recent survey of human resources executives from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an outplacement service firm, 48% of companies say they're reviewing their pay policies with an eye toward closing the compensation gap between male and female employees.Others are making changes already.After disclosing small differences in employee pay earlier this year, Citigroup announced it will give raises to even salaries between men, women and minority employees. SORRENTO VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - A Marine veteran suffered major injuries after a wrong-way driver crashed into him on I-5 early Saturday morning.Friends have identified the victim as Luis Maldonado. He was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. His service dog Jax, who was also in the car, was taken to an animal hospital and is expected to survive.The wrong-way driver died at the scene. California Highway Patrol suspects he was under the influence of alcohol. He has not been identified.Maldonado's friends have set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for the mounting medical costs.  622

Several people were hurt in an "inmate-on-inmate" disturbance at CoreCivic's Red Rock Correctional Facility in Eloy, Arizona on Sunday morning.Twelve inmates were taken to outside medical facilities for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, and one staff member was treated and released for minor injuries sustained in the incident, according to Jonathan Burns, CoreCivic's Director of Public Affairs.Burns says the disturbance happened just after 8:30 a.m. local time.The facility has been secured and all inmates and staff are accounted for, Burns said. CoreCivic is working with the Arizona Department of Corrections and local law enforcement as they continue to investigate.   724

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, said Thursday that he hasn't visited the White House in more than two months and noted that he's avoided visiting President Donald Trump in-person due to the White House's lax COVID-19 protocols."I actually haven't been to the White House since August the 6th because my impression was their approach to how to handle this is different from mine and what I insisted that we do in the Senate, which is to wear a mask and practice social distancing," McConnell said at an event in Kentucky on Thursday.McConnell added that he and the Trump speak "frequently" on the phone.Given McConnell's status as the most powerful lawmaker in the President's party, Thursday's revelation was surprising. In the past two months, the Senate has been negotiating more COVID-19 stimulus and begun the process of filling a Supreme Court vacancy, all while both McConnell and Trump embark on re-election campaigns that are intrinsically linked.Several White House officials have tested positive for COVID-19 in recent days, including Trump. While Trump has said that he supports masks, he himself rarely wears them, and White House officials are often spotted without them. In the days prior to testing positive for COVID-19, Trump ridiculed Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden for wearing masks during a presidential debate.Less than a week before confirming he had contracted the virus, dozens of top Republican lawmakers visited the White House to celebrate the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. Seventeen days after voters went to the polls in Ohio's 12th congressional district, Republican Troy Balderson hung on by a 1,680-vote margin to win the seat over insurgent Democrat Danny O'Connor.The seat, previously held by Pat Tiberi, and before that current Ohio Gov. John Kasich, has been held by Republicans since 1983. The district has not seen a competitive race since then, as both Kasich and Tiberi typically won every two years by comfortable margins. But the district, which includes parts of Columbus' affluent northern suburbs, rapidly urbanizing Delaware County to Columbus' north, as well as several surrounding rural counties, became competitive after Tiberi announced his retirement. Polls leading up to the Aug. 7 battle showed a dead heat. On election night, Balderson held a nearly 1,500-vote advantage. O'Connor announced that he would wait on all absentee and provisional ballots to be counted before conceding. All of those votes have now been counted as of Friday. “I just called Troy Balderson to congratulate him on his victory in the 12th Congressional district special election," O'Connor said in a statement. "I want to express my deepest thanks to my campaign staff, our volunteers, and to everyone who cast a vote in the special election, whether it was for me or not."Balderson also issued a response on Friday. "Danny O'Connor ran a hard-fought race," he said, "but I look forward to earning the support of voters for a fourth time in November as I share my track record of getting things done for Ohioans."While both were gracious to each other on Friday, the affinity for each other will almost certainly be short lived. Both O'Connor and Balderson also are on the ballot in November. And with control of the House of Representatives hanging in the balance in November, there is no reason to believe that either candidate will let up on the attacks on each other from the special election. Democrats will need to gain 25 seats in order to flip the House for the first time since 2010. According to Cook Political Report, there are 30 toss-up seats up for grabs, with 28 of them currently being held by Republicans.
