BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner Saturday forecast a "mild" year-on-year rise in the consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, in June, resulting in an average CPI increase of around 2.6 percent in the first half.The projection by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) came one day after China released its latest economic data.The latest estimate was revised up from a 2.5-percent CPI rise the NDRC projected on May 18.China's CPI hit a 19-month high with a 3.1 percent year-on-year increase in May, surpassing the central government's targeted 3 percent annual inflation limit.During the January-May period, China's CPI rose 2.5 percent year on year.According to the NDRC's projection posted on its website, China's June CPI will dip slightly month on month, but still post a "mild year-on-year increase" due to the low comparison basis in the same month last year.The NDRC said positive factors for basic price stability were on the increase, citing sharp falls in international commodities prices, the government's macro control policies and a crack-down on farm produce speculation as well as a possible good grain harvest this summer.Sheng Laiyun, spokesman for the National Bureau of Statistics, said Friday at a press conference that China had the basics for keeping prices under control this year."Although China faces quite a lot of pressure, the 3-percent target (for the whole year) is still possible with effort," he said.

HUAYIN, Shaanxi, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers failed to close a breach of a flooding river embankment in northwest China's Shaanxi Province Sunday,rescue headquarters said.More than 3,000 soldiers and militiamen have been filling the gap of the embankment of Luofu River with stones and sand bags, and managed to narrow the 80-meter gap into 2 meters, said a spokesman at the headquarters.But the breach expanded again to eight meters wide as stones and sand bags ran out, he said.Luofu River, a tributary of Weihe River, breached Saturday morning.A total of 6,404 people from 1,587 households in Huayin had been evacuated before the flood early Saturday. No casualties have been reported.Torrential rains pounded Huayin City from 8 a.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday.

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's National Meteorological Center forecast Thursday that heavy rains would continue during the next 24 hours in northeast China, a region already soaked following weeks of torrential rains.The observatory continued to issue an orange rain alert, the second most serious level, on Thursday, warning that rainstorms would hit most parts of the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Helongjiang over the next 24 hours, adding pressure to the country's efforts to combat floods.Rain-triggered floods have left 1,072 people dead and 619 others missing this year in China. Economic losses were estimated at 210 billion yuan (31.34 billion U.S. dollars), Shu Qingpeng, deputy director of the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, said Wednesday.Meanwhile, the observatory forecast that heat would continue in south China during the next 24 hours.Temperatures are likely to hit 35 to 38 degrees Celsius in southeast Shaanxi Province, some parts of Sichuan and Guizhou provinces and areas along the Huaihe River.
