SAN DIEGO (CNS) - District Attorney Summer Stephan warned San Diegans, especially senior citizens, to beware of a scam in which callers are pretending to be from the Social Security Administration in an attempt to obtain Social Security numbers for financial crimes.There are multiple versions of the rip-off, Stephan said.In some cases, the caller may say a person's Social Security number has been linked to a crime and has been blocked, but that for a fee it can be reinstated. The caller then asks the victim to verify the Social Security number.Another variation involves the caller saying that a person's Social Security number has been used to apply for multiple credit cards, which could cause the person to lose Social Security benefits. Or the caller may say that acause the person to lose Social Security benefits. Or the caller may say that a person's bank account is on the verge of being seized and the victim should withdraw all cash from the account."All of these are scams," Stephan warned. Gavin Newsom to consider allowing county school districts to make their own determinations regarding reopening in advance of a Tuesday decision that could send the county to the most restrictive tier of the state's coronavirus reopening roadmap.In a letter sent Monday to Newsom, Stephan said there has been ``a drastic increase in child predatory behavior on the internet'' with children out of school and teachers unable to ``be the eyes and ears of law enforcement'' to report suspected abuse among their students.Local reports to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force have tripled since schools were shuttered due to the pandemic, and that similar increases have been seen nationwide, Stephan said. Stephan also said domestic violence reports have increased since stay- at-home orders were issued, and that Rady Children's Hospital has seen an increase in ``consult cases,'' in which cases of suspected child abuse are reported by physicians.Stephan's letter was sent in advance of Newsom's Tuesday decision regarding San Diego County's COVID-19 category status, when the county could potentially slide into the ``Purple Tier,'' meaning many schools could not open for in-person learning.``When evaluating the health of our children and our community, we must consider the effects of COVID-19, but also acknowledge and weigh the other real and potentially more life-threatening threat from violence and exploitation of children,'' Stephan said.``This is the public safety lens that I sincerely hope you will consider.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who beat his estranged wife to death with a commemorative baseball bat as she delivered food to him at his City Heights apartment was sentenced Friday to 16 years to life in state prison.Dana Marion Davis, 56, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to second- degree murder in the death of April Davis, his spouse of more than 30 years and the mother of his six children.The defendant beat the 51-year-old victim with a wooden bat on the afternoon of Oct. 7, 2017, then prevented a family member and police from entering the apartment, said Deputy District Attorney Stephen Marquardt. When officers finally gained entry, she was found dead on the floor.Davis told Judge Michael Smyth that he was remorseful for killing the mother of his children."She didn't deserve this," the defendant said before he was sentenced.To his children -- three of whom were present in court -- Davis said, "I am deeply sorry for the pain I have caused you."A psychologist determined the defendant suffered childhood development trauma that affected his relationship with his wife, Deputy Public Defender Amy Hoffman told the judge.When talking to police after the murder, Davis was "clearly in shock" as to what happened, Hoffman told the judge. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities asked the public to keep an eye out for a missing Lemon Grove teenager with a history of running away from home.The last known sighting of Alonna Wintland, 15, was on July 31, when she left her home in the 8000 block of Lemon Grove Way in a car driven by an unidentified man, according to sheriff's officials.At the time, Alonna, who did not take her cellphone or debit card with her when she disappeared, was wearing beige shorts, a white shirt and sandals. Her whereabout since have been unknown.Alonna is white, 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs about 235 pounds. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - NASA astronaut and UC San Diego graduate Kate Rubins arrived aboard the International Space Station Wednesday, where she and two Russian cosmonauts will conduct research over the next six months.Rubins, Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov launched from Kazakhstan in the Soyuz MS-17 spacecraft and arrived at the station's Rassvet module at 1:48 a.m. PST following a two-orbit, three-hour flight, according to NASA.The trio joined Expedition 63 Commander Chris Cassidy of NASA and Roscosmos cosmonauts Anatoly Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner, who have been aboard the complex since April.
