SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The next time you hop in your car and drive through North Park, you could encounter one of 18 new traffic circles aimed to slow down drivers and promote caution and awareness. The executive director of SANGAG, Hasan Ikhrata, spoke Wednesday about the status of 18 intersection makeovers that include roundabouts similar one off Landis and Utah."It's obvious cars and bikes don't mix well together, especially if there's speeding involved so to overcome these we try our best to do things like this, but also make sure where we can, separate bikes from traffic so residents can bike without fear of being hit by a car," Ikhrata said.So far, million has been dropped for the Georgia Meade & Landis Bikeway project, funded by TransNet. Construction for the new additions are halfway done and although some neighbors aren't so keen about the new roadways, "people who want to go fast do go fast still, they still race. They have enough room to almost go straight through the circle." Others like 11-year North Park resident, Andrea, Linan, already feel more at ease, "traffic on this street especially, people go fast. I do cycling and you just have to be really careful about not getting hit so I don't mind roundabouts."SANDAG said since stay at home orders, the amount of people riding bikes went up 12%. SANDAG's executive director said despite conflicting arguments regarding the amount spent on the Bikeway project, "we have the data to support investing more in the Bikeway program, and I hope San Diego will have a connected network that's safe for our residents."The project has been in the works since 2013. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mother of two children killed in a Rancho Bernardo condo fire last month wants to meet the person who called 911, a family friend says.7-year-old Isabella Lopez and her 10-year-old brother Christos died in a fire at Bernardo Terrace, October 28.The children’s funeral is November 10 and the friend who has been helping plan it says the kids’ mom wants to thank the 911 caller for giving her a final moment with her dying son.RELATED: Two children dead, father in critical condition after Rancho Bernardo fire“She didn’t get it with her daughter, but she got it with her son and that means the world to her,“ said Sam Trink, “If they didn’t call when they did, she would not have gotten an extra three minutes with her son.”The funeral is being held at Grace Point church in Del Mar Heights. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The first thing Whitney Dickerson does when she gets home from work each evening is make a cup of her favorite tea.It's because her job as a veterinary technician can be stressful. "Everyday I go in and I don't know what's going to go through those doors," she said. "It could be a really emaciated animal with severe mange, it could be a really happy lab coming through."But Dickerson's angst doesn't end when her shift is over. She's living paycheck to paycheck, and has moved seven times in her six years in San Diego just to find a rent she can afford.COMPLETE COVERAGE: Making it in San DiegoShe's now splitting a two-bedroom apartment in Talmadge, which goes for ,874 a month. She's not sure how much more she'll be able to afford. "I feel like the city's slowly pushing me out," she said.Now, the rent's getting so high that it's near a tipping point for thousands of San Diegans. More than half of those who responded to a recent 10News Union-Tribune scientific poll said they'd seriously considered leaving California in the last year. </p><p> The average rent is now ,887 a month, up 8 percent from a year earlier, according to Marketpointe Realty Advisors. And CoreLogic reports the median home price in the county is now about 0,000. "That's a problem for everybody, and I think everybody feels that," said Rick Gentry, who heads the San Diego Housing Commission, which oversees affordable housing in the city. </p><p><strong>HOW DID WE GET HERE?Gentry describes something of a perfect storm when it comes to housing in San Diego -1) There's not enough housing for the middle class.2) There aren't enough resources for low-income individuals.3) The current market has already swallowed up the glut of homes built during the housing bubble before the market crashed in 2008. "And that means the marketplace has gotten that much more expensive and that much tighter," Gentry said. "There's no place to move to."Gentry added turnover has declined drastically at the 3,400 affordable apartments the commission manages, and the section 8 voucher waiting list has ballooned to 80,000. Plus, San Diego County continues to grow with more jobs - employers added 27,000 new payroll positions in the last 12 months. Meanwhile, developers in the county only pulled permits for 10,000 new homes. "It takes a long, long time to get approvals for buildings to put new product online," said Mark Goldman, a real estate lecturer at San Diego State University. "There are more and more impact fees that makes it more expensive, there's a limited amount of land to do it."Goldman said it's a very complicated, risky business to start with a piece of vacant land and try to put a lot of housing on it.He said the amount of time that it takes given environmental review, regulations, and delays raises the cost of projects - to the point that some developers just drop it. WHAT WILL SOLVE THE CRISIS?There is movement in the works to spur development, including a region-wide plan to encourage development along transit routes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The growing concerns over the coronavirus are impacting the daily routines of people across San Diego. Some businesses are changing the way they do things. CorePower Yoga has dozens of studios across San Diego. Monday morning, the company sent an email to its staff and clients outlining several precautions. Chloe Delehanti works out at the Mission Valley location."I've lived through SARS and Swine Flu, and I don't remember it being this serious of a concern, certainly never getting emails from my gym, or travel alerts, so it's definitely concerning," said Delehanti. The email stated the company is increasing its cleaning protocols and reducing the use of props and physical contact between teachers and clients. "Obviously, I really like adjustments and having that component in class, but I think it's a good idea to be as safe as possible, considering that it is a really growing concern, and there's a lot of new cases," said Delehanti.A salon in Hillcrest is also changing the way it does business. Stylists at Brightside Barber will now have the option of turning away customers who appear sick. "From here on out, not to feel like you can't turn someone away, if they are visibly sick with a fever, coughing," said Angelic Corona. She's been in the business ten years and said she's never seen anything like this. "I was relieved, cause you know, in customer service, it's kind of always been the customer is always right, but in this scenario it's health and safety for everyone," said Corona.
