SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Catholic Charities San Diego is holding a workshop Saturday for young Dreamers affected by the DACA program uncertainty.Katia Ortiz is one of them. She said her parents brought her to the U.S. from Mexico when she was three. She said she has no recollection of where she was born.“It was really tough,” Ortiz said about feeling left out. She said she could not travel on class trips, she could not get a driver’s license and she could not apply for a college scholarship. She said DACA opened a lot of doors for her. “I got a job, and I got my license,” she explained. She also said she started attending college. Earlier this month, President Trump called to cut the program in March."It’s like you have everything and then it’s gone," Ortiz added.  "It’s tough thinking about, but I think what we all have to do is sit down and reflect."Frankly, at this time, I really don’t know what I would do."Catholic Charities San Diego helped about 700 people obtain DACA status, the group said. They said U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will continue processing pending initial application accepted as of Sept. 5, 2017 and pending renewal applications already filed. They went on to say USCIS will continue accepting renewal applications until Oct. 5, 2017 from applicants whose DACA expires between Sept. 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018. As it stands, all applications after Oct. 5, 2017 will be rejected.The group is holding free, bilingual information sessions, followed by one-on-one assessments.Those who qualify will be given an appointment to work with an accredited Catholic Charities staff member to complete their renewal application the next day.Scholarships are also available to cover the 5 application fee.Saturday's workshop was at St. Jude's Shrine of the West, 3785 Boston Ave.The next sessions will be:Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. at Holy Trinity Parish, 405 Ballard St., El Cajon.Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Mission San Luis Rey, 4050 Mission Ave., OceansideThursday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, 4177 Marlborough Ave., San Diego 2159

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Creating a future has its hurdles, and can be especially tricky for people facing poverty or with criminal backgrounds. A San Diego organization is making sure the future is within reach. “I was on probation… I had to go to sober living to get my life right,” said Anthony Johnson. Johnson is a recent graduate of Second Chance, an organization in Encanto that helps kids and adults who have criminal backgrounds or are facing poverty get back on the right track through their programs and job training. “They changed my life," said Johnson. Covering the walls of the classrooms at Second Chance are notes illustrate the hope and want students have for a better future. “Our mission statement starts with the word disrupt. If we can break the past now, then the future has a chance to come into that person’s life,” said Robert Coleman.Coleman is the President and CEO of Second Chance and has been helping people create a future where they can provide for themselves and their families. “Isn’t it better to have people in our community who have hope and have a sense of direction and career and housing and not a journey of crime? We give them a future, and we are actually making our community a safer place,” said Coleman.Coleman’s dedication to the people in Encanto and Southeast San Diego, along with the gratitude expressed by his students and colleagues, is why we have selected Robert Coleman as our 10News Leadership Award recipient. “Everyone has hope. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California will close state beach parking lots in San Diego County ahead of July Fourth.In a news release Friday, the state listed San Diego among six other counties where parking will also be closed at state beaches.Other state park units will remain open, according to the state, but State Park staff will monitor visitation to ensure compliance with public health orders."Everyone has the responsibility to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, including in the outdoors," the state said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities responded Wednesday after a car slammed into the side of a motel in Point Loma.According to firefighters, the crash happened on the 1300 block of Scott Street at the Vagabond Inn San Diego Airport Marina.The driver was parked in the Point Loma Seafood parking lot when she reportedly hit the gas, driving through a fence and smashing into the side of the motel.The crash created a hole in a bathroom of one of the motel rooms. No one was injured in the crash. 499

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Candalee Carbonel remembers the panic she felt Tuesday when her son's principal called about an incident involving her 7-year-old. "This is a horrible situation, I pray no other family has to go through this," said Carbonel. Her son Cole has autism and managed to walk off the Miller Elementary campus in Tierrasanta without staff noticing. He walked about half a mile to his house. "It broke my heart, knowing I drop off my child every day at school in their hands. They are now responsible to be his safety, to keep him out of danger. This really breaks my heart," said Carbonel. Carbonel says panic turned to frustration when she learned how the school handled the situation. "They should've called 911, called the police, then called me, and I could've helped. I could've been somewhere; I could've come home, I could've been here for my son when he was looking for me," said Carbonel. But instead, the principal went to look for Cole herself, driving to the family's home. She found Cole inside the house, watching television on the couch, and proceeded to take him back to the school and call Carbonel. "It broke my heart that a little kid could be running the streets, and no one called his mom," said Carbonel. She's grateful he made it home safe, but Carbonel says she can't help but wonder what could have happened to him on the walk home. The military family is new to the district, and Carbonel says she's been advocating for her son to have a one-on-one aide as he did in his last school district. She was pushing for more support for her son so that an incident like this wouldn't happen. SDUSD says as a result of this incident, they are going to add an additional staff member to provide above-and-beyond support to Cole's classroom.
