"We’re looking for someone who is just passionate about the mission and has the time to open up their homes to having a puppy in their home," allowing those like Swenningsen to take their place as trainers."I feel obligated to do my best and make sure Fiji gets the best he can to make it through the program and help a fellow veteran out."Veterans and those who have disabilities or other medical conditions relied on service animals, putting TLC's dogs in demand, even amid a pandemic."To take a dog from a little puppy and mold it into what you want it to be which is this amazing superhero for someone with a disability and help give them independence and get them out of their homes and be part of the world."TLC partnered with Guide Dogs of America and has been in service for 20 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters are trying to determine what caused a brush fire in Mission Valley Wednesday afternoon.The fire erupted along Interstate 8 and Texas Street near iFLY around 3:00 p.m.Firefighters say steady wind carried flames from a tree across the overpass, catching dry brush on fire near Camino Del Rio.The Texas Street off-ramp from Interstate 8 was closed in both directions due to the blaze. Firefighters say a quarter of an acre was burned in the fire.Thick brush and trees were burned, but no business in the area were damaged. Crews had to conduct about six water drops in the area to extinguish the flames. 646

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Each year around this time, we marvel as gray whales make their way from Alaska down to Baja, Mexico, to give birth. However, this year's migration started late. "This year, with the migration being so late, a lot of the moms aren't actually making it to the lagoon before they give birth. So we're seeing a lot of these pregnant females giving birth on the migration this year," said Captain Domenic Biagini, founder of Gone Whale Watching San Diego.While the migration is late, Biagini says the whales look much healthier than last year, when many died. "Likely these whales spent a little longer feeding this year to make up for what they didn't get last year, and with less sea ice than normal, they're able to actually go further north looking for food, which then also makes the migration longer," said Captain Dom. Biagini says the calves aren't strong enough to dive, so he's already seen close calls with private boaters speeding by. "The problem is a lot of these grays, especially the moms with babies, are intentionally trying to keep a low profile and people aren't realizing that they're there as they're flying through thee areas. So it's really crucial to be conscious of your speed and surroundings during gray whale season," said Biagini.He says while the newborns are more vulnerable, the moms do a good job keeping a low-profile.They should arrive at their destination in a week or two. 1433

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Following a heated battle over new regulations for short-term vacation rentals Wednesday, the San Diego City Council approved new regulations in a 6-2 vote.The new rules will go into effect July 2019.The rules, which were based on a plan by Mayor Kevin Faulconer, adopt the city’s first license-based system to manage the rentals, charge cost-recoverable fees to administer licenses and enforce code violations, establish a “Good Neighbor” policy to preserve neighborhood quality of life, hire additional staff to respond to complaints about nuisance properties, and implement a per-night fee that would generate funding for affordable housing projects.RELATED: San Diego City Council approves new rules on short-term rentalsAlthough the plan initially called for homeowners to be allowed two licenses for a primary and secondary home, the council later amended the provision before the plan passed its first vote in July.Faulconer’s proposal was changed to allow a host to be issued a license for a primary residence and a dwelling on the same land as the primary residence.Faulconer also had a provision in his plan allowing no limitations on the number of licenses available to hosts within Mission Beach when it was introduced in June.
