Here's what's happening in the world of politics Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018.Congressman Collins suspends reelection campaign after insider trading charges— New York Republican Rep. Chris Collins will not seek reelection following charges of insider trading earlier this week.In a statement, Rep. Collins wrote it would be in the best interests for constituents that he suspend his reelection campaign."After extensive discussions with my family and friends over the last few days, I have decided that it is in the best interests of the constituents of NY-27, the Republican Party and President Trump's agenda for me to suspend my campaign for re-election to Congress."Wednesday, federal prosecutors charged Collins, his son, and another man with 13 counts of securities fraud, wire fraud, and false statement from the insider trading scheme around Australian pharmaceutical company Innate Immunotherapeutics Limited.Read more.North Korea continues to reject US proposals on denuclearization— North Korea has turned down repeated US proposals on denuclearization, CNN reports. The US has reportedly made "specific proposals for starting and proceeding to the end point of fully verified denuclearization," including a timeline, all of which have been rejected.North Korea has reportedly considered the proposals "gangster-like."President Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in a June summit. I can understand that some of them may be in jeopardy, and you may want to retool an antiquated immigration system. It looks weird to have a lottery system. But chain migration? No. Family reunification."Melania Trump's parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, were granted US citizenship Thursday.Read more. 2440

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania’s highest court has thrown out a lower court’s order preventing the state from certifying dozens of contests on its Nov. 3 election ballot. At issue is the latest lawsuit filed by Republicans attempting to thwart President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. In a unanimous decision Saturday night, the state Supreme Court threw out a judge's recent order to halt certification of any remaining contests. The justices say the underlying lawsuit was filed months too late. The Republican plaintiffs had sought to either throw out the 2.5 million mail-in ballots submitted under the law or direct the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature to pick Pennsylvania’s presidential electors. 721

Georgia has re-certified the results of the presidential election in the state, hours after state Sec. of State Brad Raffensperger confirmed that a machine recount requested by the Trump campaign upheld president-elect Joe Biden's win in the state.Raffensperger also criticized those who continue to doubt the results of the 2020 presidential election in the state, saying that the push to overturn the results was "hurting the state."Georgia has counted ballots in the presidential election three times — the initial count, a full election audit and hand recount, which was done at Raffensperger's request, and a machine recount which was held a the request of the Trump campaign. All three counts have shown Biden won the state.Raffensperger says he's been personally pressured by fellow Republicans to personally intervene and overturn the results of the election. At a Saturday political rally, Trump criticized Raffensperger publicly. There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the state. Last week, Attorney General Bill Barr said the Justice Department had not yet found evidence of fraud that would change the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. 1174

GREAT FALLS — The dim glow of a scented candle illuminating holiday cards is a sight that can be found in many homes during the holidays - but can quickly lead to one much less festive."We see a couple candle fires every year,” said Great Falls Fire Marshal Mike McIntosh. Candles are one of several holiday traditions Great Falls Fire Rescue reminds people to think about."Make sure that if you're using a candle you don't put it near anything that could ignite and (catch) on fire. The other thing we would also recommend is, any time that you leave the room or that you go to bed at night that you make sure that you extinguish that candle,” McIntosh said.Next up, holiday lights. "Make sure that your Christmas lights are not damaged, frayed or look like they've been cut in any way. If they are, make sure you throw those away and go out and buy some new ones,” McIntosh said. "Also, regarding Christmas lights, we want people to know that there are some lights that are designed for indoor use and outdoor use and some that are only designed for either or. So make sure you know which type of use of lights that you have."GFFR also recommends using a surge protector and plugging it directly into a wall. Plugging several surge protectors together is just asking for trouble. If you've got a live Christmas tree in your house, don't let it dry out and become a tinderbox. "Make sure that you water it every day and that you out fresh water in the base,” McIntosh explained.Good advice to keep your holiday spirit up and keep your holiday from going up in flames.Get more holiday safety tips at the National Fire Protection Association website, including this overview:Winter holiday fire factsElectrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in almost half of home Christmas tree fires.More than two of every five (42%) home Christmas tree fires started in the living room. Google has rolled out a new feature on its Maps app: traffic lights at intersections.Users on an Android and IOS will be able to see the traffic signals at crossroads throughout US cities, according to CNN.According to CNN, the traffic light features have been available in Japan for years. In August, Google unveiled a way for users to see on the app a way to identify easier terrain like beaches and forests with a "color-mapping algorithmic technique." It also has re-drawings of sidewalks and pedestrian islands for better navigation viewing. 553
