The Food and Drug Administration is investigating an outbreak of Listeria that has killed at least one person.The FDA, CDC and public health officials are looking into ten cases of Listeria monocytogenes infections reported in Florida, Massachusetts and New York. One person has died, the only available information is that the person lived in Florida.Genome sequencing of the Listeria bacteria isolated from those infected shows the ten people in this outbreak are more likely to share a common source of infection, according to the FDA. Samples were taken from patients between August 6 and October 3.In interviews with nine of the infected people, they all reported eating Italian-style meats recently, like salami, mortadella, or prosciutto, according to the FDA.Public health investigators have not found a common type of deli meat or common supplier among the patients at this time.The patients in this outbreak range in age from 40-to-89 years old, and all of them needed to be hospitalized.Listeria can cause different symptoms, depending on the person and part of the body affected, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Department of Justice this week is sending a strong message to American cities: if you can't stop crime, federal agents may be on the way.On Wednesday, Attorney General William Barr announced the launch of "Operation Legend" — named after a 4-year-old boy, LeGend Taliferrom, who was shot and killed while he was sleeping in Kansas City last month.Kansas City is one of several American cities dealing with an uptick in crime. According to the Department of Justice, violent crime is up 40% since last year, with at least 100 murders so far this year.The New York Times recently reported the top 25 largest American cities had seen a 16% increase in murders in recent months.What is "Operation Legend?"The mission will send around 100 FBI, ATF and DEA agents, as well as some U.S. Marshals, to Kansas City to aid in crime prevention.Agents are not expected to assume command of active investigations but rather serve as a deterrent to violent crime."Operation Legend will combine federal and local resources to combat the disturbing uptick in violence by surging federal agents and other federal assets into cities like Kansas City, a city currently experiencing its worst homicide rate in its history," Barr said in a statement.Kansas City will not likely be the last place federal agents go. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidance that recent studies have indicated that cloth masks offer more protection against the coronavirus than previously thought.Previous guidance suggested that masks were best used for preventing the spread of the virus. The CDC now believes that masks are effective for both stopping the spread and reception of the virus. The CDC said on Tuesday that multi-layer cloth masks can both block up to 50 to 70% of fine droplets and particles and limit the forward spread of those that are not captured. Overall, cloth masks offer up to 80% blockage in human experiments. The CDC’s analysis found that cloth masks offer comparable protection as surgical masks.“Studies demonstrate that cloth mask materials can also reduce wearers’ exposure to infectious droplets through filtration, including filtration of fine droplets and particles less than 10 microns,” the CDC’s guidance said. “The relative filtration effectiveness of various masks has varied widely across studies, in large part due to variation in experimental design and particle sizes analyzed. Multiple layers of cloth with higher thread counts have demonstrated superior performance compared to single layers of cloth with lower thread counts, in some cases filtering nearly 50% of fine particles less than 1 micron.”The guidance says that mandatory mask wearing can help prevent the need to implement economic shutdowns.“Adopting universal masking policies can help avert future lockdowns, especially if combined with other non-pharmaceutical interventions such as social distancing, hand hygiene, and adequate ventilation,” the CDC said.In an interview with Andrea Mitchell of MSNBC, Dr. Anthony Fauci said that wearing masks is “two-way street.”"Recent data has now shown that as a matter of fact, there's also the added benefit to protect you from droplets and virus that's coming your way," Fauci said Tuesday on MSNBC."“You protect others," he added. The coronavirus outbreak has disrupted 14 college football games scheduled for this week, five of which involving AP Top 25 teams.Among the games postponed, Texas A&M will sit out for the second straight week due to coronavirus cases.
