CYPRESS, Calif. -- It’s Friday the 13th and finals week at Cypress College in Southern California. A chilling combination for some, but for other students it’s just another day at school. They’re studying for a career that’s not for everybody – but a career that will eventually impact just about everyone. These students are prepping for their final exams in mortuary science, a degree where they can make a living while dealing with death.“This is from what I’ve learned is a gasket casket,” said Karla Ruiz, a Cypress College mortuary science student. Ruiz has a goal of advancing her career from a local morgue to national security. “I’m really into watching a bunch of CIA stuff or like crime stuff,” she said. “So, I want to find something that can open the door for that.” Cypress College is one of about 60 colleges across the country that offer this kind of end-of-life education. It may seem like a grim career choice, but the mortuary science industry is now attracting different kind of demographics. “As far as male female it’s certainly changed,” said Damon de la Cruz, Cypress College mortuary science assistant professor. “It wouldn’t be hard for us to see in a graduating class of 20 something like three males and 17 females. It’s really shifted in that direction.” It’s a direction where there’s now a growing demand for qualified workers. “There’s not enough students to meet the demand of the community,” de la Cruz said. “As result of that many of our students are placed or they get hired before they even graduate.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the median annual wage for morticians, undertakers and funeral directors is more than ,000 a year. Funeral service managers can make closer to ,000. “I’ve been in this industry for a long time and I’ve had many opportunities presented to me to where I’ve grown, been able to afford a house, and be able to live comfortably in southern California,” said Harbor Lawn Mortuary funeral director Michael Roudebush. Roudebush has hired several Cypress College students through the years. He says a career in mortuary science can be financially rewarding but also emotionally draining “Empathetic and compassionate people are what we’re always looking for,” Roudebush said. “We are people too and we’ve been through what the families have been through. We all experience loss.” Back on the college campus, students like Ruiz are gaining an understanding of death that they can use for a lifetime. She says that after studying death, she now appreciates life more. “Ever since doing this I’m closer to my family,” she said. “I actually want to go home and hang out with them.”A celebration of life that comes from knowing exactly what others have lost. 2746

The Kansas City Chiefs announced Monday that star quarterback Patrick Mahomes signed a 10-year contract extension, which reportedly will be the richest contract in sports history.ESPN's Adam Schefter broke the new early Monday afternoon, citing league sources. The Chiefs confirmed the 10-year extension, which is in addition to the two years remaining on his current rookie contract, via social media several hours later. Here to stay. . .! :alarm_clock::alarm_clock: pic.twitter.com/mfwMga3Kl0— Patrick Mahomes II (@PatrickMahomes) July 6, 2020 Clearly, Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt, who watched the Chiefs wander the NFL wildness for decades unable to draft and develop a franchise QB, and General Manager Brett Veach weren't messing around.“This is a significant moment for our franchise and for the Chiefs Kingdom,” Hunt said in a statement from the team. “Since he joined the Chiefs just a few years ago, Patrick has developed into one of the most prolific athletes in all of sports. With his dynamic play and infectious personality, he is one of the most recognized and beloved figures to put on the Chiefs uniform. He’s an extraordinary leader and a credit to the Kansas City community, and I’m delighted that he will be a member of the Chiefs for many years to come.”Veach said the Mahomes extension "has been a priority for us for quite a while now" and thanked his agents, Chris Cabott and Leigh Steinberg, "for their efforts and patience" along with his own staff for getting the deal done."I’ve said from the beginning that Patrick is one of the most impressive players I’ve ever scouted, but I don’t think anyone could have envisioned everything he’s brought to our football team and community," Veach said in a statement from the team. "His abilities are so rare, and to couple that with an incredible personality is outstanding. We’re going to continue to do everything we can to surround him with talent, and this deal provides us more flexibility to do that. He’s obviously an integral part to our success and we’re thrilled he’s going to be the quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs for a long time."It didn't take much convincing to get coach Andy Reid, who cemented a Hall of Fame legacy by guiding the Mahomes-led Chiefs to the Super Bowl LIV title, on board with keeping Mahomes around as long as possible.“I’ve had the privilege of coaching a lot of incredible athletes and special people in my career, and Patrick is without question on that list of players.” Reid said in a statement. “The best part is he’s still early in his career. He’s a natural leader and always grinding, whether that’s on the field, in the weight room or watching film, he wants to be the best. He’s a competitor and his teammates feed off his energy. He makes us all better as an organization and we are blessed he’s going to be our quarterback for years to come.”Mahomes' decade-long extension, which matches the longest contract extension in league history and keeps the 24-year-old Mahomes with the Chiefs through the 2031 season. Chiefs and QB Patrick Mahomes have reached agreement on a 10-year -- 10-year! -- contract extension that ties him to Kansas City through the 2031 season, league sources tell ESPN.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 6, 2020 Exact terms of the deal were not announced Monday, but Schefter later said the deal would be worth 0 million overall with 0 million guaranteed for injury. No other NFL player is currently signed beyond the 2026 season. Compensation update: Patrick Mahomes’ 10-year extension is worth 0 million, sources tell ESPN.The injury guarantee is 0 million, per source. The contract does not contain language that ties its value to a percentage of the salary cap.Richest deal in sports’ history.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 6, 2020 The Chiefs traded up in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft to pick Mahomes at No. 10 overall. He spent his rookie season learning the offense and the professional ropes under Alex Smith's tutelage, making one start in the regular-season finale at Denver that season.During his first season as Kansas City's starting quarterback after Smith was traded, Mahomes led to the Chiefs to the top seed during the regular season and the AFC Championship Game, the first one ever hosted at Arrowhead Stadium. He also was selected as the 2018 NFL MVP.After bouncing back from a dislocated knee early in 2019, Mahomes led the Chiefs to the franchise's second Super Bowl title in February 2020, picking up Super Bowl MVP honors along the way.Mahomes' 10-year extension ties an NFL record for the longest contract with two other former star quarterbacks.New England's Drew Bledsoe signed a 10-year, 3-million extension in March 2001, though he was injured in the second game of the 2001 season and replaced by Tom Brady in the Patriots' lineup.Atlanta signed quarterback Michael Vick to a 10-year deal worth 0 million in January 2005, but he was out of the league two years into the contract after pleading guilty to federal charges related to a dog-fighting ring. The 10-year extension is the richest in sports history. Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout currently boasts the largest contract in sports history, a 12-year deal worth 6.5 million signed last year. With the two existing years on the deal, Mahomes will be owed 5 million during the next 12 years, Patrick Mahomes had two years and .6 million left on his existing deal -- .8M this year, .8M in 2021.His 10-year extension is worth over 0M, though it's still uncertain how much over.So the lowest his 12 year-deal could be worth is 7.6 million. But will be more.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 6, 2020 Mahomes' deal will easily surpass current Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan's 0-million contract, a five-year deal signed two years ago, for the richest in terms of total value in NFL history by more than triple the amount. The most-lucrative NFL contract in terms of annual value is Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson's four-year deal, which he signed last year and pays him an average of million per season.Mahomes' extension pays him million per season. KSHB's Sam Hartle and Tod Palmer first reported this story. 6696

CHICAGO, Ill. – The fight against domestic violence has found a new warrior in a surprising place – the hair salon. And now, more and more states are looking to stylists to spot the signs of victimization. For Joan Rowan, who has been in the salon business for 44 years, the bond between hair stylist and client is strong. “It's a very intimate relationship,” said Rowan. Over the years, she says she’s heard the intimations many times before. “’He'd kill me if he knew how much money I spent. No, you can't cut my hair too short. My husband doesn't like it.’ Those kinds of answers. Suddenly you're asking them like are you OK?” It’s those in-chair conversations that drove her 20 years ago to start training her own staff to recognize the signs of domestic abuse. “They all knew stories and heard it all before. They had had clients who came bruised or hair missing,” said Rowan. Many clients she said appeared sad or afraid. In 2017, Illinois became the first state to require all cosmetologists and salon professionals to complete a one-hour, one-time education course on how to spot the signs of domestic violence and sexual assault. They look for evidence of physical abuse like bruises and cuts or outward behaviors like self-blame, sudden lifestyle changes, and irregular appointments. The law, which went into effect this year, impacted more than 84,000 licensed cosmetologists and estheticians in the state. “We are not trained as reporters or anything like that,” explained Rowan. “All we do is give them a phone number that they can call if they need help.” According to the Professional Beauty Association, Illinois, Arkansas and California, have already passed laws mandating domestic abuse training for cosmetology school students or current salon professionals. Since last year, another six including, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Texas, have attempted to pass similar legislation. For salon owner Susanne Post, it’s personal. “Part of my story is that I’m a survivor of domestic violence myself,” said Post. Two years ago, she helped create a domestic violence training program for Nashville stylists. She says she’s hopeful that her home state of Tennessee will pass a law similar to other states. "In Tennessee, we are the fifth in the nation at the rate that women are killed by men, which is just unbelievable,” she said. “It affects one in four women, and one in seven men.” Joan Rowan says she’s proud to have been part of genesis of the training and the laws that are now spreading to help protect both men and women. “It has saved lives,” Rowan said. “It's real. And it doesn't have to be. And we can all help people get out of trouble.” 2725

8/10Sometimes the best sequels are the long-awaited ones nobody was asking for. It could be a far-fetched premise on paper, but when the execution is done properly and enough care is put into it, the final product can reinvigorate a long-dormant franchise. Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time falls into this category. The original PlayStation series took a nosedive following the core Naughty Dogg trilogy that concluded at the turn of the century. After several bargain bin attempts to revive Crash during the last two decades, developer Toys For Bob has taken the reins and found a way to properly bring back the bandicoot.Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time retains what I love about this franchise: loveable imperfections. Like the originals, this game presents increasingly challenging platforming scenarios that cause equal parts laughter and frustration. The confusion about how I mistimed a jump or how an enemy bested me constantly made me wonder if it was my fault or fault of the game’s design, and in an odd way, I respect the franchise for establishing that type of confusion, whether it be intentional or not. By default, Crash 4 is more polished than those games from the 90’s, but the lovable imperfections remain at its heart. Image from crashbandicoot.com Crash Bandicoot 4: It's about time Crash has a new set of skills this time around thanks to the addition of Quantum Masks - this game’s version of infinity stones, basically. Donning one of the four face coverings grant new abilities, and each world caters to its levels toward each power-up.Masks present gameplay styles that feel inspired by recent platformers, including Ratchet and Clank (2016) and Guacamelee! , while also feeling like the perfect fit in this game’s world. Image from crashbandicoot.com Crash Bandicoot 4: It's about time Along with the platforming comes an attempt at a more fleshed out story than the series has told in the past. I, for one, am not up on my Crash Bandicoot lore, but the more hardcore fans will likely find joy in this direct sequel to Crash Bandicoot: Warped. The game’s story is a mostly forgettable tale that involves Crash and friends restoring order to the multiverse. I lost interest pretty quickly, but the anticipation of another level helped me see it through until credits rolled, plus the game has a skip cutscene button which was much appreciated. Image from crashbandicoot.com Crash Bandicoot 4: It's about time Though the story did not grab me, the level design certainly commanded my attention. Each world in this game has a distinct theme that’s gorgeously realized with eye-popping animation, making it an absolute blast to traverse through. My favorites included the Mardi Gras-like Mosquito Marsh and the dinosaur-filled Eggipus Dimension. In previous Crash games, I was always focused on where to jump next, ignoring what’s in the background, but this game’s commitment to cinematics distracted me more than a few times with its imagery (in a good way).Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is easily the best game in the franchise. Its commitment to detail and overall creativity has brought breathed new life into the series in a way that caught me, and I expect many gamers off guard. Developer Toys For Bob has more than earned the chance to create its own original franchise, but if the next move is a Crash 5, I will certainly be up for another adventure.Review code provided by publisherRelated: Super Mario 3D All-Stars reviewFor more game reviews, follow Joey Greaber Facebook|Twitter This review was originally written by Joey Greaber on KGUN9.com. 3732
