SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 4-acre brush fire in Chula Vista highlighted a firefighting technique that's relatively rare throughout the state: nighttime aerial water drops.Once considered too dangerous to attempt, a handful of agencies in California now have the helicopters and equipment needed to handle night operations, including the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.San Diego Fire has been doing water drops using military-grade night vision goggles since 2005, said pilot Chris Hartnell. The agency expanded its night helicopter coverage countywide in late 2014.Only two helicopters in San Diego County have the capability to do night drops. Both were in use Wednesday when flames broke out near a riverbed just before 11 p.m. in the 2500 block of Faivre Street, near Hollister Street.CAL Fire does not currently operate firefighting helicopters at night anywhere in the state, although the agency has plans to purchase 12 new helicopters with that capability, said CAL Fire San Diego spokesman Thomas Shoots. The agency just received its first Firehawk helicopter this year and plans to put it into service in about a month, Shoots said. Two more helicopters should arrive before the end of the year, and the agency plans to acquire all 12 by 2021. 1256

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego is the seventh-best university and the best public school in the country, according to just-released rankings from Washington Monthly.UCSD fell slightly in the nonprofit magazine's rankings compared to 2017, when the school ranked sixth overall but second to Texas A&M among public universities. Harvard took over the top spot on the list from Stanford, first on last year's list, with MIT, Princeton and Yale rounding out the top five.Washington Monthly ranks schools based on a number of factors, the theme being how positively each school impacts its community and the country at large. Magazine contributer Kevin Carey called UCSD "a research powerhouse" at the time of 2017's rankings and noted that roughly one-third of the school's population is made up of first-generation and low-income families."We are proud to be recognized as the leading public university in the nation for expanding educational opportunity for diverse students, conducting bold investigations that benefit all and infusing a service-oriented outlook into all of our research and teaching," said UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two major freeway connectors in San Diego will be closed overnight for routine maintenance, Caltrans announced.The southbound Interstate 5 connector to eastbound state Route 52 near La Jolla and the southbound Interstate 15 connector to westbound Interstate 8 in the Mission Valley East area will both be closed at 3 a.m. Saturday, with the I-15 closure expected to reopen at 8:30 a.m. and the I-5 closure set to reopen at 9 a.m.Caltrans crews will be performing landscape maintenance at the I-5 junction with SR-52. Those needing to head east on from the interstate to the highway will be directed to drive past the closed junction, exit at Clairemont Drive, get on northbound I-5 and then take SR-52 east.The closure in Mission Valley will allow Caltrans crews to make electrical repairs. Signs on southbound I-15 during the repair work will direct drivers to exit the interstate at El Cajon Boulevard and reenter the northbound lanes of I-15 to connect with westbound I-8.Caltrans reminded drivers to be work-zone alert by avoiding distracted driving, paying attention to traffic and slowing down when approaching work zones. 1154

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A .2 million judgment against the San Diego Rock ‘N’ Roll marathon over injuries suffered by an elite wheelchair athlete was recently upheld.Craig Blanchette was born without legs due to a birth defect, but that has not stopped him pursuing his passions. He is a wheelchair racing champion. At 20-years-old, he won a bronze in the 1988 Summer Olympics and over the years, set more than 20 world records. “Wheelchair racing just fit me,” Blanchette said. He eventually took a break to compete in hand cycling, but was preparing to return to wheelchair racing. Court documents said he did everything to prepare for the 2014 Rock ‘N’ Roll marathon, including studying the course map and virtual tour several times. Documents state Competitor Group, which operates the marathon, eliminated a lane on Eleventh Avenue an hour before the race—a move that changed Blanchette’s life. “I wasn’t racing recklessly. I was definitely going to make the corner,” Blanchette said. “When it’s too late to do anything about it, I realized the course had been narrowed by 13 feet. It was significant.” Blanchette was not aware of the change and crashed into a car. He was going more than 20 miles per hour at the time, according to court documents. “It’s the crash that ended my career,” Blanchette said.He filed a civil case against Competitor Group. A jury ruled in his favor and the Court of Appeal recently upheld a judgment of .2 million in his favor. “It’s the best they can offer because they can’t me my racing career back,” he added.It was bittersweet for Blanchette, who had to undergo surgery and several months of recovery. “The doctors basically told me that if I went back to racing and I injured it again, they wouldn’t be able put it back together like I did the first time,” he said.Blanchette now hand cycles, which uses different muscles, and spends time helping other athletes. He has been part of the National Wheelchair Sports Camp for years and this year, Blanchette’s attorney is also helping out. “This case was very eye-opening for me,” said attorney Russel Myrick. “With the proceeds from the case, we intend to make big improvements to the camp and we’re really looking forward to working with the kids.” They hope this ruling will help other athletes with disabilities. “They didn’t accommodate for us in the way that we deserved,” Blanchette said. “[You] want to treat us the same in value, but not the same in function.” Competitor Group did not return Team 10’s request for comment. 2529
