SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The fight over the future of short-term vacation rentals in San Diego is now targeting paid signature gatherers hired by the largely Airbnb-funded campaign.The campaign, called "Stand for Jobs, Stop the Vacation Rental Ban," needs to raise about 35,000 signatures to overturn the City Council's recent vote to limit short-term vacation rentals essentially to primary residences. A group of residents called the San Diego Community Working Group on Short-Term Vacation Rentals is now drafting a letter to multiple city officials alleging that the signature gatherers are misleading voters with false information about the regulations. RELATED: Airbnb: San Diego teachers made .7M renting out their home last year"You won't be able to do bed and breakfast, and then there's a huge emphasis on the amount of money on the fee. There is no fee for home sharing," said Gary Wonacott, a member of the group, giving examples of what he's heard.There are now upwards of 200 signature gatherers around San Diego. On Friday, there were five of them spread across the Target shopping center on Sports Arena Boulevard.LaKeisha Weaver says she is being paid more than for every signature she gets. "It's just like a traveling position."Weaver says she tries to engage voters with a very brief verbal pitch and has official literature for them to read. But that strategy, employed by many signature gatherers, is leading to the concerns of inaccurate pitches to voters.But it's unclear how common that is. Outside Target, one signature gatherer was calling to people by saying "Good morning, Sir," or "Good morning, ma'am." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man accused of opening fire into a Hillcrest business has been found incompetent to stand trial. Stefano Markell Parker, 29, was facing attempted murder charges in San Diego in connection with the shooting at Golden Dragon Asian Bistro in February of 2019. Witnesses in the area that night described a man they say stood outside the restaurant armed with a rifle and opened fire. No one was shot. Witnesses say the gunman then changed clothes, providing a description. Police arrested Parker in the area later in the night. A spokesperson at the Jefferson County Jail in Alabama previously confirmed to 10News that Parker was in custody in recent years. In 2016, he was arrested in Alabama for possession of marijuana and drug trafficking charges. In 2017, he faced charges of distributing methamphetamine and possession of marijuana. Court records also show that Parker faced capital murder charges when he was a teenager in connection with a shooting from a vehicle. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The battle between rideshare companies and drivers' unions is on the ballot in the form of Proposition 22. It's a way for companies like Uber and Lyft to push back against California's Assembly Bill 5, which classifies drivers as employees with benefits instead of independent contractors.The gig companies are fighting the state in court, so they haven't been following those rules since the law went into effect on Jan. 1. Now, the fate of drivers will be in the hands of California voters on Nov. 3.The Yes on 22 campaign is backed by Uber, Lyft, and Doordash.It would classify drivers as independent contractors.Drivers could work towards a stipend to help purchase their own health insurance.They would also get some hourly pay, but only during what's called "engaged time." Yes on 22 says engaged time starts from the moment a driver accepts a ride until they drop the passenger off. It does not include time drivers spend waiting for their next passenger."If you were to compensate for all the time the driver spent on an app, you'd have to force them to accept every ride that comes across which would eliminate their flexibility to choose when they want to work and how long they want to work," said Vetter.Driver Al Porche says that's exactly why he's voting yes."Times are great right now," said Porche. "I've been driving all this year. I switched over from transporting people to delivering food and meals or groceries."According to the New York Times, rideshare companies have spent more than 0 million promoting the campaign, making it the costliest in state history.A "No" vote on Prop 22 would continue the current ruling under AB 5, reclassifying drivers as employees with a swath of rights and protections.Tonje Ettesvoll is against Prop 22, warning it's deceptive if you don't look closely."When you look at all these ads on TV and social media, that is Uber and Lyft's voice, said Ettesvoll. Just because you're a cashier in a store and you don't have somebody checking out doesn't mean you're not paid," said Moore. "It is definitely helping the billionaires and the people who are running these companies but it is not helping the drivers."The Yes on 22 campaign says if the proposition doesn't pass rides will be harder to find and prices will go up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The bomb squad was called to the 2300 block of Meadow Lark Drive around 6:20 p.m. after a man reported he found WWII-era Japanese grenades.The man, Mike Carter, is a former Marine and said his training kicked in when he found the three gnarled pieces of metal."I just figured it would be the right thing to do to dispose of them properly and not throw them in the trash," Carter said.He is a hobbyist, buying items like radio-controlled cars, helicopters and other toys, and then he sells them online. One remote control helicopter that he said he paid for is actually valued closer to ,500.This was his second time buying a storage locker and his interest was piqued by a Saturn IV Rocket. With it came a wooden box he put in the bed of his truck.As he worked his way through the items inside, he came across the bombs.Carter said he took a picture of them, then put them back where he found them and called the bomb squad.He said he was never nervous about them exploding, saying they've been around at least 75 years.His street was shut down for about an hour. He apologized for the trouble to his neighbors.When it comes to whether he'll ever buy a storage locker again, he said maybe. There would have to be something worthwhile inside, and he would check the contents before bringing anything home. 1362
