BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Beijing launched a one-month household registration survey on Sunday in preparation for the once-a-decade census of China, the world's most populous country, which begins in November.A total of 100,000 uniformed census takers will go door-to-door in Beijing from Aug. 15 to Sept. 15, along with policemen, to check each household's current residential information, said a spokesman with the sixth national population census' Beijing office.Foreigners and residents of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan will also be surveyed for the first time, except those on short-term business or sightseeing trips, according to a census regulation jointly issued by the State Council and the National Bureau of Statistics in May."This is because the upcoming national census seeks to survey 'every natural person' in China and Chinese citizens who live abroad but have not obtained long-term living permits," said Su Hui, director of the office.The survey aims to count the total number of Beijing residents and to correct false household registration information and provide accurate information for the sixth national census, he said.Experts say that many households do not unregister their deceased family members so they might continue collecting social insurance funds from the government. Also, some children born in violation of the country's "one child" policy were also not registered.All information collected in this survey will be kept confidential, and will not be used for other purposes, Su added.Since the founding of the People's Republic in 1949, China has conducted national population censuses in 1953,1964,1982,1990 and 2000.The last census, a decade ago, set China's population at 1.29533 billion people.

TOKYO, July 23 (Xinhua) -- New Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa on Friday called for deepening of Sino-Japanese mutually beneficial strategic relations."In recent years the leaders of the two countries have created a conducive environment for the development of bilateral ties. I am very glad to see that," Niwa told Chinese press in Tokyo.Upon his assignment to China, the Japanese ambassador said China and Japan, as close neighbors, should deal with each other for the upcoming 1,000 or 2,000 years rather than 10 or 20 years. In the long run, both countries share a lot of common interests, and a stable, friendly relationship is the ultimate goal.The former president of Itochu Corp. said that he aimed to boost communication, strengthen economic cooperation, and build on the mutual trust between the leaders of the two countries.Niwa also said in the age of multipolarization, no one can conduct diplomacy with knowledge of China alone. So the relations with South Korea, and the United States are also important.Niwa was appointed by Prime Minister Naoto Kan in June to the key diplomatic post, making him the first ambassador to China from outside the government sector since the two countries normalized ties in 1972. BEIJING/YICHUN Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday started the official probe into the Yichun plane crash which killed 42 people and injured 54 others while domestic airlines were ordered to overhaul safety measures.The State Council, or China's Cabinet, has set up a special work group to probe the cause of the crash. Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao ordered a thorough investigation and beefed-up efforts to ensure air travel safety.Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang, who led an investigation team to the lush forested city of Yichun overnight after the crash, headed the work group.Zhang called upon the work-group's first meeting Wednesday but details of the meeting were not made public.Li Jian, vice director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), told Xinhua that the work group has started to gather evidence for the probe, but the process would take some time.A Brazil-made ERJ-190 turbine jet of Henan Airlines crashed during the landing at the forests-surrounded Lindu Airport of Yichun City late Tuesday night, killing 42 and injuring 54 passengers and the crew on board.Fifteen severely injured, including children and a vice minister, were transferred to four key hospitals in Harbin, the provincial capital on Wednesday night.Initial probes and survivors' accounts indicate the plane missed the runway and crashed on the ground, cracking the cabin and triggering a mild explosion.No signs of sabotage have been found so far, investigators said.The black boxes of the jet have been retrieved.The Lindu airport of Yichun was closed down shortly while operations of the Henan Airlines were suspended.The board of directors of Henan Airlines on Wednesday sacked the airline's general manager Li Qiang and appointed an acting manager to replace him.Cao Bo, Li's replacement, served as the chief pilot of Shenzhen Airlines, the parent company of Henan Airliens.Major Chinese carriers, including the China Eastern and China Southern, on Wednesday called upon emergency meetings to review the companies' safety measures.
