SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The fire on the USS Bonhomme Richard has impacted every sailor who works on the ship, but also those who live on the ship. To help, groups have stepped up to accept donations to give to the people who have been displaced. The Navy Life Naval Base San Diego Facebook page posted a warning to watch out for fake GoFundMe or charity request pages, and said the government is not allowed to accept donated funds to fix or replace the ship.Related: Crews battle USS Bonhomme Richard fire for fourth dayThe post highlighted three official groups to donate to who are safe and reliable: Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, which is accepting online payments and mailed in checks to be donated to sailors,Support the Enlisted Project, which is accepting all types of donations, andUSO San Diego, which is also accepting all types of donations.Gillian Gonzalez, with the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, said more than 80 sailors lost all of their belongings in the fire. Her group immediately bought gift cards for sailors displaced and they’re working on replacing uniforms as well. She advises that people who make donations to their group specify that their donation should go to the USS Bonhomme Richard sailors directly.The USO office is taking every type of donation, from hygienic items to clothes. Executive Director Ashley Camac said they’ve taken loads of items to the ship every day since the fire started.“It might have been where they lived. It certainly is where they worked. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The commissioner of the Pac-12 says 15-minute testing technology from a San Diego company could be the “game-changer” needed to restart competition in the conference before the end of the year.The Pac-12 is considering restarting college football as early as mid- to late-November, according to ESPN, as long as it can secure approvals from state and county lawmakers in California and Oregon.In some conferences, college football is entering its third week, but Pac-12 schools like USC and UCLA are still in workout mode after the conference voted last month to postpone all sports until 2021 at the earliest.League officials are now revisiting that decision and considering an earlier timeline after signing an agreement with San Diego-based Quidel Corporation to provide rapid antigen testing for all athletes, including daily tests for high-contact sports like football.“The access to rapid result testing that we can implement on even a daily basis with some sports with high contact will be a real game changer for us,” Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said after touring Quidel’s facility this month.Most nasal swab tests are genetic tests, or PCR tests, which seek out the genetic code buried inside the virus’ protein shell. These tests are considered the industry standard, but they require processing in a lab to convert RNA into enough readable strands of DNA. Results can sometimes take days.Quidel’s nasal swab test is what’s called an antigen test, which looks for parts of the virus’ protein shell. It can be read by machines at each university in about 15 minutes.“No one's going to be spreading the virus because no one will be engaging in practice or competition with the virus,” Scott said.That’s the hope at least, but the partnership with the Pac-12 will be an important test for Quidel’s diagnostic product.Quidel was the first company to get a rapid antigen test on the market, securing an emergency use authorization in May. But there were questions about the accuracy of the test compared to PCR tests in the small sample size provided by the company.In July, Quidel published more data showing its antigen tests matched up with PCR tests 96.7% of the time when a positive was detected. But those results were only among individuals who were actually showing symptoms.“The question that people have is in the asymptomatic population, will the data look similar?” said Quidel CEO Doug Bryant in an interview.Bryant said the company has unpublished data that will be forwarded to the FDA showing “very similar” relative accuracy to PCR tests in asymptomatic individuals, but he said the goal of the partnership with the Pac-12 is to investigate the tests even further.“We want to know that the tests we’re doing are appropriate for use in the asymptomatic population. And we need to demonstrate that, to not only the scientific community but to the public at large,” Bryant said.The testing program with the Pac-12 will essentially be a large clinical trial to find out if rapid testing of athletes can prevent spread, backed by the muscle at some of the premiere research universities.The Pac-12 is hoping the testing program will convince lawmakers to ease restrictions on college athletics, particularly in California.Although the NFL played a game at the new SoFI Stadium in Inglewood last weekend, nearby USC cannot gather in groups of more than 12 players.There are now four antigen tests on the market. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The City of San Diego will consider making a significant change to the way voting is done, best known as "ranked choice voting."It would allow voters to list up to four candidates in order of preference, rather than just cast a traditional ballot for one candidate."It's a very interesting system that hopefully decreases some of the negative campaigning that we ordinarily see," Councilmember Mark Kersey, who supports ranked choice, told 10News Friday.In the proposed version of ranked choice that San Diego is considering, the top four candidates in each primary race would advance to the general election, rather than the top two. In November, voters would then rank the candidates by preference. If one candidate has more than 50 percent of the vote on first count, that candidate would win. If no candidate reaches 50 percent, the last place finisher would be thrown out. That person's votes would then be reallocated according to the voters' second choice. The field would continue winnowing until a candidate tops 50 percent.UC San Diego political science professor Thad Kousser says ranked choice allows voters to feel like they are not wasting their vote on a long shot, and helps avoid the idea of voting for the lesser of two evils. "It allows voters to take a sincere vote without throwing away the weight that their vote would have," Kousser said.Kousser also says ranked choice helps keep races from getting as negative. "It could give candidates incentive to play nice with each other, to be less negative in their advertising beceause they would love to be second place on every voter's dance card," he added.Kersey says the City Council will consider placing ranked choice on the November ballot, with the goal of making the change in 2022. If the council elects not to put ranked choice on the ballot, supporters say they will launch a signature drive to get the measure on the ballot that way.Other cities in California have already adopted ranked choice, including San Francisco, Oakland, and Palm Desert. The concept is also gaining steam elsewhere in the country, with Maine moving to ranked choice for statewide elections."There's a reason why people are looking at doing it this way," Kersey said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir San Diego has filled the community with music, funded dreams, and kept African American history alive for three decades.The group started with a local alliance of ministers from different denominations who came together for an annual concert to raise funds for students aspiring to a career in visual and performing arts, according to the choir director Kenneth Anderson."I think they are woefully undervalued in our country the power of art and how it can connect and communicate and bring people together when we're so driven apart," 20-year choir member Dale Fleming said.In 1990, the singers decided to created the MLK Community Choir so they could sing year-round.Andersen said, "It was non-audition but somehow all of these different timbres and levels of musicianship come together to make a beautiful sound."The religious tone of the group has changed over the years. "Some don't really believe at all but we all believe in the power of music," Fleming said.They still sing gospel, and write their own hymns to keep Black history alive."A majority of the spirituals that survived were code songs. When they sang about leaders in the bible, especially Moses, but Jesus and God, that was code for Harriet Tubman," Anderson explained.The group has flourished, touring through seven countries, creating and selling CDs, even singing for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican in 2004.
