A federal jury awarded Planned Parenthood nearly .3 million in damages Friday after finding that anti-abortion activist David Daleiden and his group broke federal and state laws when they secretly recorded employees of the organization.Daleiden, who leads the anti-abortion organization Center for Medical Progress, and co-defendant Sandra Merritt posed as biotechnology workers for a fake company called Biomax Procurement Services in order to secretly record videos of Planned Parenthood employees between 2013 and 2015. A Chicago house party devolved into chaos when a dispute led to the shootings of 13 people -- possibly at random, police said. The 13 victims range from 16 to about 48 years old, said Fred Waller, chief of the Chicago Police Bureau of Patrol.Four of the victims -- including the 16-year-old -- are hospitalized in critical condition. The other victims are in stable condition, Waller said. The melee broke out around 12:35 a.m. Sunday in the 5700 block of South May Street."This incident stemmed from a dispute within that party," Waller said. "This party was given in the memory of a subject that was slain in April. We're still developing details as far as that goes."Police said shots were fired in three different locations."Shots were fired within the residence, which caused everyone to start to leave," Waller said.As partygoers fled the home, police believe one of them opened fire outside, police said."Then a vehicle was driving down the street. One of the people also who left the residence fired upon this vehicle," Waller said. "So we had three different scenes, all within a close proximity."Waller said 1128
A fast-growing, wind-driven wildfire swept into the northern Los Angeles area overnight, forcing hurried evacuation orders for tens of thousands of people, closing portions of at least three major freeways and sending firefighters scrambling to save homes. The Saddleridge Fire, which started Thursday and exploded to 4,600 acres by early Friday, jumped across the 210 and 5 freeways overnight as it spread into northern Los Angeles neighborhoods. An undetermined number of homes have been destroyed, and mandatory evacuations were called for more than 12,000 homes -- often while occupants were sleeping -- in and near Los Angeles' Porter Ranch neighborhood, the Los Angeles Fire Department said."We need people to leave now while they can," Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said early Friday. 809
