SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Too many young military families in San Diego are finding themselves trapped in mountains of debt, not knowing where to turn.It's a devastating problem that the nonprofit Support the Enlisted Project (STEP) is working to tackle."It's a real challenge, and I think we are setting these families up for failure a lot of the times," said Tony Teravainen, CEO and Co-founder of STEP. "Their wage with all their allowances, E4 and below, 100% of them are below HUD's low-income level."RELATED: San Diego woman climbs out of 3,000 debt holeTeravainen says families often don't ask for help until things have gotten really bad. STEP helps prevent roughly seven evictions each month for young military families. "As a country, we don't have great financial habits. And what we see is when families enter the military we put additional burdens on them, and a lot of times this pulls them further, further into debt. We ask them to move their houses every two to three years; service members can be deployed at least a third of the time."The goal is to get as many families in need into their Emergency Financial Assistance (EFA) Program.RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Millennials outpace Generation X in both total debt and long-term savingsThe EFA Program is a unique social-work and change-management based program that was specifically designed to move military and veteran families from a financial crisis to a lifetime of financial self-sufficiency. Each family gets a social worker who helps them create a budget and set goals for the future.Teravainen says 4,500 families have come through the program since it was created in 2012 and they have a 90% success rate."A success story to me is a family that can change their behaviors," said Teravainen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two women are launching a new nonprofit, Black San Diego, to bolster Black-owned businesses locally.It started at a kitchen table over chips and salsa four years ago. Sheri Jones, a real estate broker, and physical education teacher Tinicia Smith wanted to create a hub for Black-owned businesses in San Diego.They created a Facebook group called Black San Diego and now they're more than 34,000 members strong."For the last four years we've been able to collect data and what we realize is that business owners haven't been able to sustain because they don't have the tools," Jones said.She first noticed the issue when she was running her real estate business and went to a conference. She said she was the one Black person there and it was uncomfortable."I knew when I was having trouble, others must be too," Jones said.This week, Black San Diego became official, registered through the government and they're excited to plan workshops to offer those tools to the community. Jones described the workshop as, "an 8-week course where they can go through and get business basics, book keeping, business taxes, really how to formulate their corporation."Newly Appointed Board Member and CEO of Growth 1031 Lance Growth said these workshops are crucial for black-owned businesses like his."I stumbled into my position.. I made so many mistakes and I just had to sit down and learn from those mistakes," he said. "I'm going to send my operations lady, and ask her to take some extra notes on accounting, on marketing, on filing correctly, but it's a really beneficial tool."The workshop costs 0 per business and the nonprofit is launching a donation campaign to sponsor local Black-owned businesses."If the dollar circulates in the Black community then we can unite and produce generational wealth and that's what we're here to do," Smith said.They hope to bring members of their community out and help them elevate their business, "they don't want to step in the front, not get criticized, not get caught up in the chaos. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While hundreds of thousands of San Diego County residents are receiving the mail-in ballots they asked for this week, some residents are receiving mail-in ballots whether they asked for them or not.Registrar of Voters Michael Vu tells 10News about 41,000 people this election is living in precincts where there are not enough voters to field a polling place."When you think about all those political jurisdictions participating in the election and all those boundary lines that overlap one another, it's going to create various pockets throughout the entire county," says Vu.YOUR VOICE, YOUR VOTE: Local, national 2018 election newsVu says any precinct with fewer than 250 registered voters can become an automatic mail ballot district. In those cases, all registered voters in the district will receive a mail ballot.
