SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A non-profit that drives sick kids and their families to the hospital is celebrating one million miles.Climbing into an Emilio Nares Foundation car, mom Latoya Johnson and her 19-year-old daughter Tay Tay started recalling the memories over the last decade. They were one of ENF's first rides. The non-profit was founded in 2003 and began giving rides in August 2005, according to ENF Vice President of Programs Luz Quiroga. The program expanded from San Diego to Orange County in 2009. Rides started in the Imperial Valley in 2015, and expanded again to San Bernardino, Riverside, and South Los Angeles in 2019.The founders lost their son, Emilio, when he was 6 years old to leukemia. During the exhausting hours of treatment, Emilio's parents realized other families didn't have enough support. When Emilio passed, they turned his loss into a legacy.Johnson said Tay Tay was first diagnosed with a tumor the size of a golf ball in her chest when she was 4-and-a-half years old."It was behind her left lung, it was growing attached to her lung," Johnson said. She found it hard to get to doctor's appointments and treatment. 'It was about three buses, two trolleys and a bus on the other side,' Johnson said. The trip took two and a half hours, then they had to walk up a hill to get to Rady Children's Hospital.In the doctor's office she saw a flier for the Emilio Nares Foundation, and they have been getting picked up ever since, shortening their trip to a half-hour door-to-door.Once they kicked the tumor in Tay Tay's chest, they found out when Tay Tay was 15 that she had a brain tumor. "She's 19 years old now, so she literally is a walking blessing, a walking miracle, and I wouldn't trade her for nothing in the world," Johnson said smiling, pinching her daughter's cheek.Johnson said without the foundation she would have been in tears and they absolutely saved her daughter's life.With the foundation celebrating one million miles, Johnson is working on understanding the impact the foundation had not only on their lives, but on 4,000 children."I wanna cry, because I know I'm crying but the tears won't come out because they're all on the inside, but it's amazing. I'm just happy and blessed for you guys," Johnson said hugging CEO Karen Terra.She hopes telling her story will get more families the help they need.ENF kicked off their "Ride with Emilio" campaign Monday and it continues through the end of the month. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man who was attempting to paint graffiti on a downtown building fell to his death Friday morning in East Village. The incident was reported about 8:30 a.m. on 15th Street near Broadway, across from San Diego Police Headquarters. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of activists are upset after the San Diego Police Department rescheduled a Black History Month celebration for the department's current and former black police officers.The department's celebration was scheduled to take place Saturday, February 24th, but was canceled just days before. The group says a committee of officers was appointed to plan the event in January. They think the cancellation was politically motivated. Monica Montgomery spoke during a brief press conference on Monday at the Civic Center Plaza. She thinks the decision to reschedule the event was made after the keynote speaker was announced. The speaker was supposed to be Geneviéve Jones-Wright, the candidate for San Diego district attorney. She's running against interim D.A., Summer Stephan. The police department told 10News the event was rescheduled due to planning conflicts. Lt. Scott Wahl said they plan on notifying officers when a new date is set. The D.A. sent 10News the following statement: "District Attorney Summer was not involved in the planning or the rescheduling of this event." 1143

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local father is recovering from stab wounds after getting attacked by an intruder in his home. The man's 20-year-old son shot and killed that intruder according to San Diego Police. It happened just before 6:30 Tuesday morning at a home in the 6300 block of Lake Shore Drive in San Carlos. Neighbors heard the violence. "I heard the gunshots, it was like three or four gunshots, then screams for help immediately after," said Denise Rolla. When police got to the home, they found the suspect dead in the pool and the 54-year-old homeowner with stab wounds to the upper body. Police say the homeowner's son shot and killed the intruder, who stumbled out the back and landed in the pool. "I heard what turned out to be the suspect fall into the pool and then a couple minutes later, you could see the blood start to spread out through the pool," said Andrew Grogg, who lives right next door. There are walking paths and Mission Trails Golf Course is located behind the homes which are just southwest of Jackson Drive. Neighbors say they don't have a problem with transients in the area, but police say so far, it appears the 38-year-old suspect is homeless. His name hasn't been released. The family owns a tire shop in La Mesa. They are well known and liked in the community. "They're local business owners in the community. They're great neighbors. They're kind, they're nice," said Grogg. Police say so far, the attack appears to be random. 1472

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent accused of pointing a gun at a man in East County was charged Tuesday.Investigators said Agent Ed Zuchelli waved the gun at a young man who was riding a dirt bike in Lake Murray on February 16.Zuchelli is also accused of driving drunk. San Diego Police confirm he was in a government-issued vehicle at the time of the arrest.
